Tech Help - CPU priority causing low fps [FIXED]Follow

#1 May 08 2011 at 4:26 PM Rating: Decent
Hello guys ive finaly discovered why my pc is lagging fps wise so much, first i thought it was simply because of me setting the 3d ress to 1920x1080 and it not liking it but after investigating ive now found it, my pc start POL.EXE are normal prioority in the task manager but soon as the game starts the game is thrown all the way down to LOW priority, i go into windowed mode and stand in an area i get 18 fps, i turn the priority to normal or higher and my fps instantly caps out for 2-3 seconds then the screen freezes and blinks and fps back to 18 and when i check the priority auto gone back to low, so even forcing normal or high cpu priority for the game is useless because the game forces it back, this is what is causing all my fps issues and prob im guessing a lot of other peoples without them knowing, Anyone know of any way i can get it to force and stay on a normal or higher priority ?

FIX

So far it may look like ive fixed it, downloaded program http://efmer.eu/download/boinc/priority/Priority_1_2.zip

this lets you add the program so you type for example pol.exe int he box when the program is running then set the priority e.g. normal and click ADD then minimise and when running your program will run at that setting and not revert back. so far with shadows on medium im fps capped looking at 12 people and it jumps down to only 27-28 when running and turning.

#3 May 08 2011 at 4:33 PM Rating: Good

You do not need to install SE's windower. It is an option under the FFXI Config app.

I do not know the solution for your problem, but in the past, using that windowed mode has caused performance problems with the game.
#6 May 08 2011 at 5:04 PM Rating: Decent
yea but the problem also occures in fullscreen mode, the fps goes to 18 but oc i cant minimize game to check but same fps and lagg like in windowed mode.

What videcard you use? i always had bad lag with a cheap 8400gs, 6fps near horst, tele points, summons etc, even with everything turned down.

Got a 460gtx, getting above 20 now with everything max in crucial areas and cap elsewhere.

i got an ATI HD 5850, ok first all i can say is download that program i listed in the OP and set your game cpu priority to above normal or max, i also got the FFXI windower which lets you alt tab in and out of game without it crashing, i now have gfx on max and shadows on full and seems to have constant 30 fps.

I would just like to say, while I haven't checked the link above, be careful downloading anything as always.

Some people have suggested setting the CPU affinity so that POL will run on only 1 core if you have a multi-core system. FFXI is not really programmed to take advantage of multi-core systems.

but dont the cores just work automaticaly ? like if the gam dont support multicore the cpu wont use it on th at program ?

Two things.

I don't know that link but I wouldn't trust it. I use this program:

http://systemexplorer.net/
Much more established company/software.

It can set priority AND like mentioned it can set core affinity.

To elaborate, FFXI was made eons ago using Directx 8 and is heavily CPU based. FFXI does not run optimally when using more than one core, hence setting core affinity to 1 is best. Plus, CPU speed is most important thing to make the game run better.

Next off, the ATI 5000 series idles down cuz of some stupid *** drivers/hardware. You can flash the BIOS of the card to not idle down or download MSI Afterburner and some other plugins and force it to idle down.

Link: http://event.msi.com/vga/afterburner/

To force it to not idle down, you have to OC the GPU, even if it is only by 1 measly mhz. You can then force it to stay at maximum.

I have an intel q9550 (oc'ed to 4ghz) and ati 5850 (oc'ed to 905mhz), doing both of the above lets me run fully capped at 29.4 except in besieged or campaign, then all bets are off. Still get pretty good ones, but meh.

Nice thing about system explorer is you can set core affinity AND process priority to whatever you want and check the 'permanent' and it will always open with those changes made.

Enjoy and hope you figure it all out.

EDIT: Oh, and I use 10.6 Catalyst drivers cuz I found them to be the best so far. I might try the new ones SE posted but I'm reluctant to use something that might not work as well.

Ok, you have to 'unlock' your ATI Overclocking via Catalyst control Center.

Go to ATI Overdrive section and click the little lock icon so it shows it as 'open'.

Then you can open MSI Afterburner and the sliders should be able to be moved. Move them up a little bit and save the profile.

Alternatively you could use the AMD GPU Clock Tool. It is much easier if you are confused by MSI Afterburner.

Download link: http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads/1641/AMD_GPU_Clock_Tool_v0.9.26.0_For_HD_5870.html

With that you can adjust the speeds of the core and memory, and even the power to the card (albeit only a bit). The card should then stay at the speeds you want.

I would think your card can do 900 or so for the core and just leave at stock for memory as I've seen no real world benefits of increasing the memory speeds.

If more questions, just ask. Someone or I can help more.

Peace.

I realized I didn't answer your which core question, it don't matter. I use my lowest temperature core (using real temp to find out), seeing as it is going to be pegged to the max.

Using 11.2 drivers should be okay, but using the ones from SE's official page may be better as they are guaranteed to work with FFXI.

One other question, do you use Win7? Just as the drivers are different for XP.

Lastly, I see that you mentioned you use the SE windower. That's all fine and good but there are known issues using it. It seems to slow down most systems, even though it shouldn't. There are other 'programs'/windowers you can use that won't degrade performance. You can Google it or if you PM me I can send a link. Alla, don't like that info freely posted.

Peace.

Running the unofficial Windower fixes the priority problem, among so many other things.

You're more likely to be banned for picking your nose in an emote than for Windower.
