I was recently pointed towards the four skill up foods (I dont know if they are new, or only recently discovered), and I have to say I'm more than a little intrieged, especially after all the campaign I have been doing recently.

For those of you unfamiliar with them, two of the foods Elshena and Saltina increase the rate at which Combat Skill ups are gained, and the other two Stuffed Pitaru and Poultry Pitaru increase your magical skill ups.

I was wondering if anyone had anymore indepth info on them? What kind of an increase can you expect to see, is it noticable?

The info on wiki is pretty limited, it states that Stuffed Pitaru increases your none offensive magical skill ups, and Poultry increases skill ups on your offensive magic. However there is no such distinction between the two melee foods on wiki, I assume one increases Offensive Combat Skills, and the other increases defensive skills Eva/Parry/Guard etc?

Yes but Im not to sure on what to believe. They are saying that the saltena is for offensive skills and the elshena is for defensive. But in the 2 of each food I have used. I got the most skill ups with Elshena in offensive skills while the skill up rate with saltena didnt improve anything.

There is also the rumor going around that storing tp cuts the skill up rates of saltena down so I constantly spammed my ws when i hit 100 tp and still no difference.

From my point of view ppl are labeling the foods the wrong way. But then again maybe I am wrong and just got some bum food.

This sounded too good to be true so I had to do a source check. Looks okay.

They're definitely at LEAST as potent as Martial Mastery.

Which I've never even been able to notice.

I figured I'd give them a try, Picked up a few Saltina and Poultry Pitaru as I'm currently in the process of recapping my BLU skills.

I skilled up on birds in Mis.Coast, with 3 Poultry Pitaru I went from 329 Blue Magic skill, to my cap of 361. So 32 levels in just under 90 minutes. Though to be fair blue magic is one of the fastest levelling skills I've ever had, even without skill up bonuses. So its hard to tell how much of an impact the food had (I generally set low cost, quick firing lowbie spells for fast skilling).

After capping Magic I started to focus on my sword. I used one Saltena and went from 330 to 333 before it wore off, which to be honest isnt all that impressive (and my acc was fine), heck even without a bonus to skill ups I'd have expected more than 3 levels in 30 mins. Could have just been bad luck, regardless of any potential bonus, skill ups are still random.

I'm still undecided, and dont know what to think. I'll give it another try tomorrow when I get up, but right now I'm tired and off to bed.

This is false, they will both effect offensive and defensive skills the same. One is higher because it actually gives stats. They are at least as powerful as Martial Master as someone has said. I used Saltena's to cap evasion and G.Katana on my Ninja, each one lasted 30 min and I'd get about 5-8 levels per 30 min of evasion on my nin (starting at 280). Gotta love Regen Atmas.

Basically a good way to remember is that if it's an area that isn't affected by Signet, Kupowers won't have any effect either.

I only read the OP. You can gain decent skill ups with Saltina for weapon skill. I once gained 4 levels off one mob, granted my skill was way under level, but it seemed to help me get skilled up for WS Quest when I leveled DNC.

I've yet to try the other ones. I think Elshena is for guard/evasion/parrying skill rather than weapon.

While that is true, note that it's not necessarily true the other way around (there are areas where Signet works, but Kupowers do not... such as Sky)

Best way to know if kupowers work: when you zone in, you should get additional spam in your log saying X Y and Z kupowers are active. Don't see those messages = kupowers don't work there.

Unfortunately, from everything I've seen the skill up food really doesn't do much to improve skill ups, and could almost be seen as nothing more than a placebo effect.

Yeah, it sounds like it affects skill gain about as often as you see a proc from the Fire/Flame Sword.

From what I've seen the skillup increase starts to fall off at about 220 and by 280 you're pretty much wasting gil as it appears to do nothing at all.

Staff skill on war took about 45 minutes for 120 to 220. 220 to 280 took just over 3 hours. And another 3 hours from 290 to 298. All on birds in mis coast. I gave up on food at that point and capped it on whm, feeding TP to Glavoid group over the course of a few evenings*. :)

Had about the same skillup rates on scythe and great sword. Club and axe was noticeably faster because of dual wield.

*Feeding TP to large worms apparently causes tanks to go into rage mode after about 30 seconds

I definitely noticed an increase even in the 280+ range. I was skilling Great Axe on dolls in Altepa. I think I started around 275 without food, and it was extremely slow. I gained about 5 points in an hour. Then someone told me about Saltenas, I death warped and bought a stack, came back... within the next hour I'd gained about 12 points. An hour later, I had Fell Cleave finally.

Skill-up in general just feels slow, but I think the skill-up foods are worth it.

Please watch the language and the tone, since that kind of talk isn't necessary in here. As for your luck with using the skill up food, I'm glad you had so much luck with it, but from what I've seen from the accounts of several others that have used those foods, your skill up experience seems to be an exception, not the standard. A lot of people have been noticing that while the skill up rates seemed to be a bit faster, it wasn't to the point that they could have said that the food was actually doing anything.

For me, Saltena works. However, the apparent increase in skillups I'm seeing may perfectly be due to placebo effects, as I haven't made any serious tests on the skillup rate difference between with and without it. I think it does indeed increase the skillup rate, but if it doesn't... Well, at least it motivates me enough to go and whack some crabs in Abyss Grauberg from 100 to 220ish skill, and then gather 3-4 mandies in Abyss Misareaux or Tahrongi, and retaliate away the rest of my levels.

What, no mention of Prouesse Ring?

I've generally only skilled up new weapons in Kuftal Tunnel with Prouesse Ring, Saltenas, and Martial Master active.

I would say it's a pretty noticeable increase, with my highly accurate NakedEyeParse 2.0. After skill 200 I can't say anything for sure.

The problem is, all we have are anecdotal reports from a handful of people. And anecdote != data. The entire idea of one food being for defensive and another food being for offensive pretty much boils down to one statistically meaningless skillup session, and a few other people saying "me too!".

We believe there is some effect, because SE said so. Pretty much everything else is speculation. And yes, sushi is clearly a better option if you're having significant accuracy issues.

I can say that it does not work like the fishing skillup enchantment. I know this because the fishing enchantment will occasionally (very rarely) give 2 skillups from one fish. I've never seen two skillups from one action under the effects of these foods so it can't just be giving an aditional roll for a skillup like the fishing enchantment does.

FYI you can wear two fishing skillup rings and enchant yourself twice. You will then get three skillup rolls per fish.

Saltena - Placebo or not, I do use it when skilling up, along with the prousse ring (in which I received 14k in tabs and countless other pages getting) it may be placebo, because if I'm skilling a weapon, I'll usually toss on 3 TA atmas (lion, apoc, alpha/omega) if it's a weapon, or, as I did the other day on shield/parry for pld, get 4-5 mandies on me at flux 8 in mis coast. I went from 204 shield to 282 in maybe 3 hrs, as well as 298 to 309 parry in same time frame(45 lvl on parry to go for my sam before update happens). Having 4-6 DA'ing mobs on me at once does tend to force more shield/parry to happen, and more shield/parry tends to lead to more skill ups eventually.

I know it has been said before, no point to have capped parry. But it has always been a goal to have it capped.

After using a stack of them, I've decided that Saltena is worth it and gives a noticeable boost. It got to the point where I was thining "Hmm, the skillups seem to have died..." and then I noticed that my food effect had worn off.

You don't get a skillup every hit with them on, and you don't get nothing with them off, but as far as shortening the whole process it seems worthwhile enough.
