click play ffxi screen goes black then the dreaded error message (play online has stopped working comes up) and that's it

i run
windows 7 ultimate 64 bit
pentium dual core E6300 2.8g
4g ram
radeon hd 6790 1g

what i've tried so far

run as admin
updated driver
updated directx
full re-install and patch
all the resolution from the drop down menu
windowed mode or not
older version of my graphic cards driver

what i havent done

I DONT KNOW !!!

the patching was done while i wasnt looking at my PC and i got logged off for being iddle 20 min (after the full patch) but it still was showing the patch sucessful

could be a lot of things...first, I'd check your resolution settings. FFXI simply doesn't like some non-standard values and it just crashes and dumps you to desktop without a POL D3DInit Error message. Also, make sure you are configuring everything properly for FFXI (if it's crashing in Full Screen, try windowed mode--something could be tripping up loss of focus on init in full screen mode). Seem to recall a while back that the Steam install was putting a funky path to the FFXI Config tools, not the standard POL path on the start menu, but it's nested under a Steam folder or something.

You could be running up against the old issue with older DirectX games where certain DLL's are not available. The fix was to run the offline installer to copy those libraries to the hard drive. IDK if running the latest DX11 will cut it--in the past people had to run the DX9.0c offline installer or the full blown SDK to fix it.

Newest drivers are not always the answer. They tested the 6x00 series for compatibility with v11.1 drivers, might be wroth it to try older drivers. There is s nice archive of drivers at guru3d.com.

i tried bunch of resolution and always the one in the drop down menu and its not the d3d error message it's only the playonline has stopped working message i tried full screen and windowed (not with the 3rd party windower) i think i used the directx offline installer (the one where you extract all the files since 2005 or so) i also did a full file check no error

i'll try the older version of my GPU will keep you informed of my progress

thanks

oh.. just out of curiosity, what is your Power Supply rated at, and how old is it?

That video card alone can eat up over 100w easily when it goes into 3D mode--think it's rated up around 150w under load or something like that. To run stable, probly gonna need at least a good clean 300w or more probably (generic PSU's sometimes can only maintain 60-70% of their rating under load even when new)--an old 450/500w may not be meeting that demand anymore. If you are replacing your PSU, you may want to spend the extra on an 80+ certified (may say nVidia SLI approved or something like that). These things are quaranteed to maintain 80% or more of their rating under load and high heat conditions--and usually have a strong warranty (my Corsair TX650 has a 5 year repair/replace warranty--Corsair typically just replaces).

Corsair has a pretty generic PSU calculator on their site, but Asus has a more detailed one (even though it doesn't have some of the newer options, so you'll have to adjust a bit, like pick an ATI 6850 for the GPU and such)--you may find your current PSU isn't quite cutting it (Corsair recommends a 550+ for my setup, Asus says 600 because I can flag more options like extra fans, PCI devices, etc):

http://support.asus.com/powersupply.aspx

http://www.corsair.com/learn_n_explore/

It's best not to skimp on the PSU--always try to get a little more than you need, as the components degrade over time--so if a calculator says 480, don't shave it close by getting a generic 500/550w model (when it is under load, it may eventually only give 350-400w).

nah i'm running a 550 or 650 antec high efficiency been running crysis 2 no problem i doubt ffxi would ask more than that.

eh.. at a loss too. Short of a hardware issue (overheating, bad cell in memory or something). Only other "common" things I can think of are wrong version of POL (shouldn't be an issue, as you got the current UC installed), or something is causing FFXI to loose focus--either another app is interfering or something is tripping a GPU reset somehow. Could try installing with the Vista client you download from POL site just to rule out the client I guess.

It's a long shot, but powerplay could be kicking in and dropping the card back to 2D clocks/voltages (FFXI really does nothing to keep the new cards "awake"). That was a really OLD problem--I seriously hope it hasn't crept back into play. The fix for that was doing something to keep DX inited like opening something like a widget in the background, or forcing clock/voltage settings with something like ATI Tray Tools or Rivatune so that the card stays throttled regardless if in 2D or 3D mode.

Found something interesting you may want to look into. It's an older post.. but it may still be an issue, IDK if Steam has recompiled there installer. It was more or less an issue with the version of POL that was installed with Steam, and to fix it you had to install the SE POL viewer over Steams, then let it update to fix it:

A little further down, there are some posts about issues with the FFXI Config tool too you may want to look at.

i tried installing the playonline from www.playonline.com over my steam version but now it wont see my ffxi wich i did not uninstall i just crushed the old playonline with the new one. is there anyway i can tell my new playonline that ffxi is still there? Cuz i think downloading again via steam would just cause more trouble as i cant chose to install only ffxi it would crush my new playonline with the steam one that "could" be the cause to my problem.

fixed ! here's what i had to do

install via steam patch both playonline and ffxi

copy only the ffxi folder

uninstall everything

re-install playonline via their website with the win 7/vista compatible playonline version

install all the game with my old CD's usin the setup.exe on each CD's

then copy/paste my first ffxi folder over this new one (so i dont have to apply the patches again just a file check)

and its working now :D

I'm confused. If you had the game disks lying around anyway, why didn't you just install from them? Is there something about a Steam account that only works on Steam's version of the game?
