Time for me to bump this thread again to bring you some more awesome news from Producer Hiromichi Tanaka.

For the new UI that is currently in development for the Windows version, we will be enhancing the resolution and revamping icons for enhancements, abilities, magic, and other items. These new icons require resident memory, so unfortunately due to their being a lack of this for the PS2/360 we will not be able to implement the same icons for these versions of the game; however, we are planning to switch out the enhancement icons to be the same as the Windows version.

Below is an example of Regen and Refresh:

And here are the two-hour abilities for each job:

Can you tell which is which? These designs are still under-development.

We will be changing the graphics for other spells and abilities as much as we can. One of the objectives for this is to display the icons in the macro palette to make them clickable, as was requested in the past.

Also, in regards to the PC requirements to be able to easily play the updated Windows version, we expect it to be a bit higher than the requirements from ten years ago. However, I believe that recent PCs are at more than suitable level.

Once all the details are finalized I will let you know.

Third one along the top row looks like Benediction. WHM is also third along the job list, going from left to right, which may make these icons:

1. Mighty Strikes
2. Hundred Fists
3. Benediction
4. Manafont
5. Chainspell
6. Perfect Dodge
7. Invincible
8. ...

And so on, and so on. I stop there because with Invincible's possible icon being a massive shield, the next job being Dark Knight and the 8th icon also looking suitable for the name, Blood Weapon, I'm assuming that it's correct.

Odd thing to me if these are new status icons for 2 hours, which they do seem to be (it's easy to point out most of them and the others do look like the other two hours and do seem to fit) why do Benediction, Eagle Eye Shot, Mijin Gakure, and Wild Card need icons? All of them are basically instant abilies that have no status icon as far as I remember (espically Mijin Gakure) :P you die literally right after it. Maybe the icon will pop up as you use it (for like half a second)?

Very good point... maybe they're for the actual menu where you select the 2-hour? I haven't played in a long time but, as far as I remember, the icons next to the 2-hours are the same as the ones next to normal JAs, right? They could be adding little icons to that menu. I don't see why they would, though, since the majority of 2-hour abilities are actvated by macro and the new icons would rarely be seen. Hey-ho, the mysteries of SE. In the darkest corner of my nostalgic heart, I hope the new 2-hour icons + the new job april fools joke means that the possibility of a couple of new jobs in the future is still there.

A google translate of the Japanese post mentions... well, gibberish as usual. Trying to translate the translation, it possibly mentions something about macros displaying the icons, and maybe something about the minimum specs of this game being higher for the PC due to the higher res stuff they're adding, but still relatively low by todays standards. Of course, I could be completely wrong as google translate sucks.

They are definitely well done, I wonder if this means that when the new 2 hours do come out (whenever that may be) if they'll also have new icons for each so you'd be able to tell which 2 hour you have up more easily.

Wow, google translate wasn't far off! Sounds interesting. I do like how they're slowly making this game prettier, bit by bit, as I'm taking it as a sign that there's still plently of life in this game yet for SE.

Okay, someone's got to ask so I suppose I'll venture it. Why would Benediction need a fancy icon? It doesn't have a residual status effect like Mighty Strikes or Manafont. It's a one-use cure ability, thus needs no status icon. Perhaps it's for the spell lists instead of the usual square with 'Ab' in it? If so, who's likely to actually see it?

Still, they are very pretty at least. I'm more interested to see if any of the spells or other special effects get an update along with this new UI.

Because as the OP says, they plan to make it so you can add the icons to macros, so instead of "Benediction" being in the macro , it could just be a picture of the icon. I'm digging that notion.

Honestly, I really like the regen/refresh, because they're pretty hard to distinguish from one another and are identical to HP/MP boost.

What I'd really like is the generic icon shield-with-an-arrow and the sword-with-an-arrow get something more discernible. OH and songs.

If you read the previous post by Tanaka it's not just a graphics replacement.. They are actually replacing the front end code on the Windows version so that they can modernize the UI.
Hiromichi_Tanaka wrote:

We are not currently planning multiple windows for “the current system.”

As we are working within the limitations of the current UI, we are a bit limited with the things we can do.
While we are working on things that we can, like the Windows version resolution improvements, we have actually begun looking into completely revamping the entire UI. Of course this is going to take some time, so once I have more information, I will be sure to share it with you.

I guess FFXI on windows isn't running on an emulator after all.

The main screen resolution for "FINAL FANTASY XI" is dependent on the "Overlay Graphics Resolution" setting.
If the Overlay Graphics Resolution is set higher than the Menu Resolution, menus will be automatically resized.

No they did say that the minimum specs will increase, which seems odd even if they are replacing the UI code. It shouldn't affect the specs noticeably at all unless they are doing more than just that. e.g. changing the rendering engine to something that doesn't glitch all the time on Vista/Win7 like it currently does. I could see them throwing a more modern rendering engine on to it without doing anything to the models and textures. It would make the game look nicer with relatively little effort.

I hope that they are doing more than just enhancing the existing JA and status icons but adding unique icons for those that share icons now. I've been using icon .dat mods for a long time because of that.

I'm betting on this option. I do like the new icons, and (speaking as someone who once used a modded UI, but is now too lazy to do so anymore) I hope they can release this and other tweaks in a timely fashion.

They should of done them all at once, not just the 2 hours ones :(

Sets a nice precedent of PC only upgrades though.

Read what Tanaka said, they are doing a complete overhaul of the core UI code so that new features that are not possible with the current UI can be added. And only the Windows version will receive this update.

Does Benediction really need a 2hour icon? It's instantaneous and over in the flash of an eye...

Regardless, I'm happy to see them doing this. ( Exp the Regen and Refresh ones, I can't recall the amount of times I've mixed up the two when doing cycles and what not )

If they add icons to the macros then every ability will need a unique icon, even the instant ones.

Honestly, if you can't remember which 2hr you just used a few seconds earlier you have bigger problems that icons won't fix.
