First of all I want to go the WAR or DRK route, what would be the best subjobs to start lvling? Also I hear lvling in abyssea is awesome but you cant start until you hit 30ish? What would I do for the first 30 lvls until then, does everyone solo nowadays? And where would I want to lvl at until then? Thanks in advance!! :DD

You'll solo faster at the very beginning. Once you hit 20+ you can join a GoV group in Gusgen Mines.

Your best bet is to do something like this:

MNK to ~20, get your subjob unlocked
WAR/MNK to ~30, unlock DRK
DRK/WAR to ~50, start on limit breaks
WAR/MNK again until WAR is at least 49
DRK all the way to 99

Abyssea leveling really isn't good for your first job. Sure, the levels fly by fast once you get going, but you'll come to a screeching halt at level 50 with G1, and every five levels thereafter. It will take about 8 hours of a solid Abyssea party to get from level 30 to 99 when your limit breaks are already unlocked, but 20-30 hours of Abyssea exp in fits and starts to get from 50-99.

Instead, you should try to find Grounds of Valor groups. They're just about as fast and you actually get to play instead of standing around trading keys to boxes. And the exp is a lot faster in the first hour compared to Abyssea, and you don't have to "know" someone or pay lots of money to get your exp done.

NOW FOR MORE QUESTIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! >:D
How would I go about equipping myself for the early levels? Is there a quick easy way to obtain gil early on I should know about? Or some kind of trade in reward stunt? I played this game LOONG ago and all I remember is the gil grind required to get anywhere? Im sure they made it much easier from what ive read so far?

A lot of the early weapon/gear drop NMs are no longer fought over for drops...but they are killed for magian trial weapons so keep an eye out for people killing NMs that drop stuff you want, most would be happy to let you lot on them... as they usually drop to the floor. (but are rarely on AH cause demand/price may be low).

Gil is much easier to come by now, do the usual crystal sales ( along with giving to Gate Guard to level fame for Nation Rank). A continuos supply of Gil is available once you start Voidwatch cutscene & can trade CP (conquest points) for Pouch of Voiddust , the best point to gil ratio ever.

If going WAR & DRK dont neglect Marksmanship as this makes soloing extremely easy with crossbow & status bolts in early to mid levels.

Jump in on Rank fights when ya can, as they pay around 200k gil in total iirc, plus sanction lasts longer & ya get more from NPC tradeables.

Some of the "Hunt Registry" NM's are easy to kill fairly early, check which drop Synergy items ( evolith) in area you are leveling (can be NPC'd or traded for CP/Status) A lot of low level scrolls are selling for more now also because people are Aby Burning jobs & just wanna get scrolls fast.

& Naturally, the sooner you find a good. casual LS thats newb friendly, the better. GOOD LUCK !

As somebody who was thinking about picking this game back up on a fresh account after not having played for 9 years, I'd like to thank you for providing the first truly helpful post on starting the game from scratch right now. There are literally dozens of posts scattered throughout the forums talking about how easy it is to create a new account, level to 30, leech to 99 in Abysea and go from there. This always sounded too good to be true to me - I constantly wondered what could a lvl 30 possibly contribute to one of these groups.

This is the first post where someone brought up that leeching from 30-99 either requires some connections, and/or serious cash. Thanks for being honest, and not trying to delude people that any random schmoe can buy a fresh account and go from lvl 1-99 in a weekend.

I am also curious as to what someone on a brand new account with no connections would do for money and leveling gear these days as well. There were 2 things that made me quit the game originally - the ridiculously long and boring lvl grind, and then having to take a 15 hour break every 2 levels to farm money for new gear, spells, and consumables. It sounds like the first issue has been addressed quite well - where do we stand on the second one?

Awesome thanks a bunch for all your help! I have to say im so excited to get back into the game. Ive been playing FFXIV with the wife but due to her schedule we cant always play together so FFXI will be my solo game atm. Nothing beats FFXI community wise, at least nothing that ive played so far. Enough ranting, thank you for all the information. :D

Level Sync allows someone in a party, usually the lowest level, to have everyone else drop to match that level. The long and short of it is this: As long as at least one person can still get exp in a GoV camp, that camp is viable. This is great on your wallet because you'll probably be wearing level 20 gear until you approach level 37/40 if you've got a long, sustained group in Gusgen Mines.

You still need to keep up to date with your spells and your skills, but because your level is capped even as you earn exp, you don't have to spend cash on useless intermediate gear that adds a whole +1 defense.

I'd probably stick with doing major gear overhauls at the following levels:

1 - Start gear ftw
15 - Access to the first decent rings and other accessories.
30 - Access to the level 30 gear sets that start having real stats.
45 - Access to gear to sustain you through AF levels
60 - Access to AF set, and choicer gear pieces like good old Scorp Harness and Hauby and the like
78 - Access to the Abyssea AH gear, which is in many cases the best non rare/ex gear available for the level. The set bonuses alone are great. The only reason it's thought of poorly is because it is cheap, and at level 99 there's better stuff. You can get the entire level 78 Abyssea sets for around 50K total gil on the AH.
99 - Access to all the gear in the game. I wouldn't bother starting on your permanent gear set until this time. At 99 you can start working on your Empyrean armor and all the rare/ex yummies that drop from NMs in Abyssea.

Additionally, gil flows like water at low levels due to inflation at the higher levels. Only lower level folks farm crystals, for example, so putzing around with gobbies and getting a stack of fire crystals will grab you 5K on most servers. Supply and demand. I don't even really farm at 99 and I never really have major gil crunches unless I just treated myself to an expensive toy, like Thunder V.

If you start in bastok, make Copper Ingots. They tend to sell for 20k a stack and the only cost to make them is the fire crystals, as the materials can be bought from the Goldsmithing guild for like 9 gil each. [Ingredients: 4x copper ore]

Level on the hill killing Worms, Bees, and Goblins all the way to level 15. You will get Beehive Chips, Honey, Wild Onions, and Zinc Ore as drops. (Also crystals).

Sell the chips, honey, and onions. Once your Goldsmithing is two (from making the copper ingots above), make the Zinc Ore into Brass Ingots (1 zinc, 3 copper). You'll want Advanced Synth Support from the guild NPC to mitigate fails. On my server, these sell for 50k/stack.

Using these methods I ended up with about 150,000~ gil after leveling a couple jobs to fifteen, with no actual farming involved. This is more than enough to pay for most of your gear. Most things are very cheap these days.

The biggest 'money grind' for a newbie character these days is magic, especially Utsusemi: Ni. As a DRK you should probably be able to skip the ninja subjob for a good while, but pretty much everyone is stuck leveling it eventually.

Honestly, I leveled straight into the abyssea range without farming for gil once on my last newbie character. If you make sure to keep valuable drops and sell them, you'll never be poor in modern FFXI.

You're gonna end up way behind on both anyway, so you might as well go Great Axe on WAR and then DRK for Shield Break, which lowers a mob's evasion so your party kills faster. Start skilling GS/Scythe when your DRK is in the 50s or 60s.

When looking for low-level gear, don't overlook being able to buy some pieces with conquest points, depending on your starting nation. I never realized this until much later, for like the lvl 40 combat casters stuff. I do remember wearing the lvl 1 RSE gear, then moving onto a leather set at 7 (NPC buyable). I also slowly collected pieces to the bone and beetle armor sets (lvl 16 and 21 IIRC). This would last me until the high 20's/low 30's once I could wear the quested RSE.

This was several years ago when I first started out and did it this way, but I was always broke. I don't think I ever had more than 10K at a single time until my first job was in the 50's. Let's just say that when WotG came out, I couldn't afford to rent a chocobo in Jeuno for a long time.
