So I stopped playing for a bit due to my deployment here to Afghanistan. Since we've settled into a solid schedule now I find myself with some extra spare time and an internet that others claim is supporting their Diablo III, GW2 trials and WoW... I tried running FFXI but got a nasty error.
"PlayOnline Viewer installation cannot write to specified destination folder.
Please check your access privileges."

I know Windows7 is a little retarded but I've played this for months prior to deployment without any issue. I DID however, move the file (I think) from Program Files in C to a Desktop folder(still C). I figured moving it broke it, DELETED IT (oye) and spent the last 3 days downloading it from Steam again. Silly me, because now with a fresh download I STILL get the exact same error.

Any help on how to resolve this craziness would be greatly appreciated. I don't expect much from the game with our absolutely dreadful internet (and updating it will likely take a week or so) but simply logging in and being able to see some friends again would be nice.

Thank you.

Actually I used to play XI on dial up and aside from patching the game worked fine.

One result for my search to this issue:

http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/forum.html?forum=10&mid=1302341283290625977&h=50

Are you launching it from Steam? Maybe that will work if you aren't.

Odds are you broke the install. Moving the folder would've broken it, I 100% guarantee that. However, the files aren't the only part of the game install, there are other pieces as well. So deleting the folder after you moved it just made it worse, because now instead of a half-relocated install, you have a half-missing install. The other half is still there, in your registry and possibly in DLLs in various places.

When uninstalling software these days, you really need to uninstall it, not just delete the files.

Now that you have another install again, I'd say uninstall it. Remove all traces. After an uninstall, poke around and see if it left any files and delete those too. The damage has already been done so you're on a quest to fix it now. Once all traces have been removed, try a fresh install. Make sure you use the correct version of PlayOnline Viewer (there is one for 64-bit and one for 32-bit, if you're on Win 7 you likely need the 64-bit version).

If going through Steam, you can right click on the game and delete the files that way, then go to your desktop and remove those as well (or wherever you moved the game folder to). Unfortunately even though you've moved the files, the registry still thinks they're in the previous location which is probably part of your problem.

I tried to Uninstall but there was no option that I could find in my POL folders nor did FFXI show up in Add/Remove programs by Windows OR CCleaner... So I had no choice but to total delete. :(
I got around the first issue (FFXI is not found in regedit, anywhere I looked) by turning off "Read Only" in the area it was located.
Scratch that. It WAS saying something else "Not registered" or something but now it's back to the original message when I try to run through Steam.

I downloaded Win7 POL from main website and it starts up and asks me to update (and I am sure being Version 1.18.00 it has a WAY to go).
It gives me some fight but 1/3 times I can get it to check files, which it finishes all 486 files, but then 100% of the time it stops at the downloading step on the first file and kicks me back to "POL-1160" Network is busy blah blah...

Tried a little over 40 times now; is it going to be possible with my awesome Affy-net or am I totally stuck until I can get more speed?

The Win7 from POL is the problem. If you're going through Steam you need to use their files. If you right click on the game in your library list on steam, there is an option to remove the game files, which equates to an uninstall.

Final Fantasy's registry location is here:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\PlayOnlineUS\SquareEnix\FinalFantasyX

I'm not sure if it is the same for Steam or not, I'm not at my desktop so I can't check for you. I found another link when Googling your problem that said the Win7 POL client being used with a Steam version was specifically causing this error. I'll have to see if I can go find it later.

By using Steam I was able to finally break the DC bug, updated POL... able to get to "Log in" screen now, but still getting the busy signal lol. I'm thinking I might have some luck, depending on internet... and thank you so much for the help so far. It's tough googling much when it takes 2-5minutes per page. I saw the Reg location via google but not there for me.

I definitely wouldn't give up, you can play on a dialup connection but patching sucks. Keep in mind however that the game will be going down in a few hours for a very long maintenance so factor that into when you try to play.

I learned the hard way that having FFXI on your computer, and then uninstalling it (even doing it the correct way and completely uninstalling it) seems to screw up future installations of the game on the same computer. At least, it did for me. I had to get an entirely new computer to install and play FFXI again (there was probably a way to fix it, but I didn't have the patience and was considering a new computer for awhile anyway).

I hope you get your problem fix, and if you're having trouble logging into POL right now, it's because of a "ninja-update" to POL that was apparently announced 4 days ago, but didn't give any current warnings. Should be down a total of like 8 hours.

Thanks for all replies. Hit a new weird snag. They boosted my internet today it seems(no doubt because today is subscription date...) so not only was I able to log into POL, but even Diablo III is working lol. If only my GFX weren't worse than my 1999 desktop... bleh.
Anyhow, I logged in and got all the way to Play before...
"Unable to start Final Fantasy XI because the beta test is installed. Please install the retail version."
What is this I don't even...

I downloaded the full size game from Steam via "Abyssea Collections"... any clue what in the world they want now?

Wondering if the one issue is that you are doing all this during the maintenance we just had which is wreaking havoc for everyone. Causing you to get the usual download errors along w/ everyone else w/ the exception that your actual DL is even larger than everyone else.

Almost had me thinking it was fixed... so I uninstalled AGAIN and re-installed AGAIN (getting tired of doing this, it takes 3-4 days each time). Still no real fix.
I can use Win7 POL to log in just fine. This time it actually allows me to add my SE Account and 1-tme PW (previously it didn't, I was confused but thought it was due to out of date. Now I know it was Beta). I updated POL and got all the way to "Play" for it to say "Final Fantasy is not installed."
WHAT?!
*looks at path, see's 8gb folder of FFXI*
Pretty sure it is installed.
Tried running the game from the folder, "polhook" is missing.
Tried running the game from Steam. "Windows cannot find (directory path)polboot.exe.

I'm trying it all but this is getting frustrating lol. is there any other way to obtain the game other than Steam? I'm almost tempted to spend the money to buy the whole game again on discs... It'd likely ship faster than the damn download! I was just hoping the Ultimate Collection would give me some updates since the 10-20kb/sec here would make a fresh from scratch install a nightmare.

Any advice is appreciated. Feel free to PM me too, I'll check in daily until I resolve this. (I would just have my family mail me the discs from home but 1: Not sure if they'd find them ALL, 2: Not sure if the books with their codes are with them, and 3: I'm missing WotG I believe, it went AWOL during a move)

You wouldn't need the codes if you know your POL ID, but the WotG disks would be needed. Have you tried Steam support? I'm not sure what else is wrong Smiley: frown

Not yet, was hoping to get a fix from people here. Never used Steam support (FFXI and FFXI Abyssea Edition are the only things I've ever gotten from them).
Guess I'll shoot them an email. I've googled the heck out of this and nadda yet so hopefully they have a clue... I work a 24 tomorrow which means I take the laptop to work so no downloading it tonight->tomorrow sadly if that is the case. Blarg I say!

Thanks for all the attempted help, it is appreciated. Going stir crazy over here on my time off. Diablo III is too hard for this dinosaur to run (don't even want to imagine TERA) and Skyrim won't be an option obviously lol. So FF is it AND it'd be nice to see some friends. Hopefully this can be resolved.

*edit*

And to add insult, I figured "Maybe it's steam!" so I checked out Amazon... I'd drop $20 for a new one, no problem since I could download it now... oh wait, U.S. only -.-! Thanks Amazon :P
