GTX 460M - problems with the *new* drivers?Follow

I just installed FFXI on my reasonably fast laptop, and found it's so laggy as to be unplayable (~10 fps).

Originally I assumed the problems were my really old drivers. I'm using GTX 460M; it appears it was a known issue (http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/forum.html?forum=10&mid=1295510385236911373&h=50) that was resolved in 266.35 beta, and finalized in 266.58 WHQL. My original drivers were older than the 266, so I upgraded to the most recent ones (301.42). However, the game performance has not changed.

Before I waste many hours trying different versions of drivers and other fixes, perhaps someone can give me some advice?

My specs are:

Windows 7 SP 1 64-bit
No windower (though performance is the same with Windower)
i7-2720QM @ 2.2GHz
RAM 8 GB
GTX 460M
Screen resolution 1920x1080 @120 Hz refresh rate
3D disabled

Thanks!

Just go back to your old drivers also might want to post this on the nvidia forums.

Well, originally I had 265.90 drivers (really old). The game was unplayable. I read the issue was fixed in 266.35, so I updated drivers to the most recent ones - 301.42. The game is still unplayable. Should I go to some intermediate drivers - like 266.58 (that's the first non-beta drivers that mentioned an improvement for FFXI)? It seems unlikely that the issue was fixed, and then broken again, but I can try.

... if it's known to be fixed in a specific release, try that first. Newer drivers have been known to inject new issues for older technology (or rehash an old one)--reference the infinite loop problem with the nvidia control panel that would come and go between driver releases for years on end, or the fan control/lag issues that came and went as well with ATI's overdrive/Catalyst AI, and such. Try the beta and/or the final release drivers said to address the specific issue--if it works, then that's what you need if it has come back in a newer release--until they fix it again in a newer driver package.

Personally, when it comes to video/sound drivers...I don't upgrade anymore unless a new release is said to address a specific issue I am having. If that new driver causes an issue, have to balance the pros/cons and decide which is the lesser evil between issues fixed/created between the newer/older drivers. As such...I'm still running drivers from 2009 on the PC I play FFXI on. They ran FF14 fine during the early beta testing, and I get steady 28-30 FPS even at telepoint/conflux in FFXI. No issues with anything I do on that PC, so see no need to upgrade unless I get new hardware that demands it.

On that note, AMD has changed its driver updates from "once a month no matter what" to "eh, when we fix an issue, we'll release a new driver." I think the latter schedule is better.

Tried all the old drivers, nothing helped. I read somewhere that the issue may be

(a) nVidia card (incorrectly) switching to low-power mode (with very low clock speed) when FFXI is launched; or
(b) nVidia card disconnecting entirely, with the on-board graphics taking over.

I have no idea how to diagnose or solve these problems. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

may have to go back to what they were originally doing--disable the nVidia card in Device Manager so it runs on the Intel Graphics. They were supposed to be releasing a driver fix for it, last I saw it was a Beta...but that was last year so they SHOULD have an official release now. Don't have the link to the forum thread at nVidia anymore...might be able to search for it on their forums. Think it was a thread about the 400 series and FFXI specifically.

Most likely it's not even using his 460M. That i7 has the HD3000 iGPU and FFXI is notorious for not playing well with newer technology.

Do you have NVidia Optimus installed / enabled?

Does your notebook have an option in Bios for fixed graphics? Can you force everything to use the dGPU instead of dynamically switching?

Possibly a silly question, but are you plugged into mains power when you try to play? My laptop (also a Core i7, but older nVidia GPU) does well when plugged in, but is a dog when running on battery - and not just in FFXI. I always assumed this was a power-conservation issue and considered it to be expected behavior.

Plugged into the main power at all times.

nVidia Optimus: yes I believe I have it; at least nVidia website mentions Optimus on the 460M page. I have no idea how to control it, or even monitor it.

I tried to run MSI Afterburner, and saw the clock speed spike to maximum a few times, but not throughout the time I was in the game.
