Therefore, if I buy another copy of the game simply to get the code on Steam, could I use it on the character that is associated to my Gold World Pass?

By the way, I'm hoping to really like FF XI. I've not played a MMO since Dark Age of Camelot, and the sheer size of WoW scares me.

Yes, you can use your Destrier code on any character. I purchased the collection for a second account, but used the Destrier code on my main.

As far as worth it, someone in your situation with many jobs/sub jobs to level, I'd say so. If you were just returning with an already leveled character I'd say no.

Hardly worth paying real money for. It's only useful up to level 30, and level 30 is about 5% of the way to 99.
Skillups are easy pre-30. You lose no exp pre-30. Reraise is available for 7 CP or 10 tabs-- both a pittance. Refresh/Regen are available for tabs as well.
If you go to gusgen with your flag up, any job you can think of will be well over 30 in an afternoon.
Unless you have way more money than sense, don't bother with the beret. You'll be over needing it in less than a week.

I remember paying 1000 cp for my instant warp scrolls on a regular basis, because, you know, that's the way it was. I still can't believe how long it's been since I started playing FFXI (december of 04), how much has changed, and how much is still exactly the same sh*t in a new wrapper

Oh god I remember that. You couldn't farm fast enough to keep up with the inflation. I paid like 11mil for a Nobles Tunic ~.~
But back to the Destrier Beret. The time you spend leveling from 1-30 isn't much shorter than leeching 30-80+ in Abyssea. With that said its quite helpful & the refresh effect stacks with book refresh getting you 2mp/tic for the first 30 levels. @#%^ing amazing for mages.

As for the DB, it's nice, but it's hardly essential. Once certain zones got GoV, I took all my jobs to 57 (the sync limit in CN) over a month or so. DB craps out at 30, after which you just look like a noob for wearing it. It only takes a couple of hours in Gusgen to hit 30 these days.
Book Reraise has always been 10 tabs. Nothing has changed. Your memory of tab prices is faulty. But in dungeon areas you can now get RR3 for 30 tabs, and it lasts two hours like all other book reraise.
The RR/Warp/Retrace scrolls, though, yes. It's the reason my HP is at the crystal in Port Jeuno. Use warp scroll, get another from NPC. Then if I'm going to WG, I take a shortcut through chocobo circuit which pops me out right by the WG warp NPC.

I have a great story about that. I was making bank as a crafter during the winter inflation.
I decided to be an industrious little critter and invest every last gil I had in crafting materials. I crafted until my eyes bled, filled several mules with product. I was going to be rich! Double my money, at the least!
I went to bed content. That night, SE deleted hundreds of millions of gil to fight the RMT-driven inflation. The economy crashed. Prices dropped by over 50%. I lost pretty much all my gil.
If only I had the foresight to sell all my gear during the inflation and wait. I could have sold average gear then, and used it to buy a relic a year later.
