So i installed ffxi and the game works fine, its just that i dont play with a mouse and kb. I used to play before and i used a pc game controller that died awhile back before i quit. Now i play swtor with a wireless xbox controller and just reactivated ffxi again to play with my gf. Last i remember it was pretty much plug and play. I remember just going into PoL config and selecting gamepad then going to the ffxi config and fiddle with that. This time around i tried to go into the ffxi gamepad config icon (the gamepad setting (P) button) doesnt work. I know that there are tons of threads out there regards of xbox 360 controller issues but non of them happens to relate to my problem. if anyone can help out it would be much appreciated!

I'm not sure I really understand your problem. Do you mean that you are unable to tell FFXI config to use the controller? If that's the case, I suggest closing the config and any other FFXI windows you might have open, restart the computer, verify that your xbox controller is connected to the PC, and open it again. It sounds like it just doesn't recognize that the controller is attached.

That being said, I seem to recall a problem with the Xbox triggers maping as axis instead of triggers and that can cause issues with the macro palette (effectively killing two buttons that you could otherwise use for things). I don't know if it's still the case, but thought it worth mentioning. I'd recommend picking up a cheap logitech controller to bypass that issue.

If the config utility isn't picking up the controller, you might want to check to see if Windows is seeing it correctly. I believe in Windows 7 Control Panel there is a way to check for peripherals like controllers, might look in there to see if it is listed. I bet you could pick up a wired controller pretty cheap, the wireless ones seem to have issues here and there (before you post and say yours is working fine, yes I know, some people get them working just fine, but some have issues).

If you seriously can't get the controller to work, I recommend the Gigaware PC USB controller at Radio Shack. It works perfectly with FFXI and does not have analog triggers, so every button will work with the config tool and it's reasonable priced (15$) compared to many other PC game pads.

Gigaware is the generic Radio Shack brand so it should be pretty easy to find. I was very glad to discover this once I realized Logitech only makes analog trigger controllers these days. (Plus Logitech puts the round Joysticks in square holes, and that really bugs me for some reason)

I never could get used to using XBox style controllers with FFXI, since you're losing 2 perfectly functional buttons.

I like my Logitech game pad (my wife uses it now and I'm pretty much KB only these days) but my first love was a PS2 controller with a PS2 to USB adapter. Worked awesome for many years Smiley: thumbsup

Same here. I've used a Logitech USB controller for a long time now and had no problems.

It's only the newest model Logitech controllers that use the XBox style analog triggers that don't work with FFXI. Older models work fine.

I had the same issue. I called xbox support and they just had me up date the drivers. Worked right away after that. Hope this helps.

I have ffxi for PC and I went to the config file and set up my controller and tested it. It worked perfect but once I log in with my character my D-pad doesn't work. If I hit the mode button on the controller it switch's my movement controller from the analog stick to the D-pad so I know the D-pad works. My D-pad is set up to be used for the menus and selecting things. Anyone know why it's doesn't work for that?
