The terrible thing isn't 20 hours, it's the NPC only holding 4 tags. The worst part of assault.
This.
Personally I play this game on and off, so when I come back after a long-time away and I have a decent chunk of abyssea stones saved up, it's good to allow me to play catch-up since I will clearly be behind.
Tags/Stones/Whatever generating over a time-period are a GOOD idea, it stops initial content-spamming and allows developers to really focus on their next project as well as making people "work together" to get things done efficiently in most cases, so the limited time is not wasted.
When they limit Tag/Stone/Whatever storage at the NPC level, that's just plain stupid, and a BAD idea.
It's like saying "OH! You are way behind everyone else? TOUGH SH*T YOU SIT THERE AND YOU ROT. NO ONE ELSE DOES THIS EVENT ANYMORE BECAUSE THEY HATE WAITING ON TAGS AND SCHEDULING REAL LIFE CRAP AROUND A VIDEO GAME. YOU SHOULD HAVE PLAYED WHILE THE PLAYING WAS GOOD IDIOT".
As stated already in this thread, it just forces you in a stupidly unrealistic routine so instead of having the ability to play the game (no matter how difficult or complex) at your LEISURE... you are stuck playing it at FFXI's very time controlling whim, and still subject to the same difficulties and complexities. It's not like they are throwing us a bone a few times a week, they are instead forcing us into an uncomfortable pocket 1 time a week. Absolutely horridly stupid to be limited in so many ways on content that could offer potential fun.
Another annoying concept is that there's no "supply and demand" with this method, it's quite simply incredibly high demand, no supply, it destroys the essence of any economy or desires from the player-base in favor of ... what? Manipulating the players to be addicted to a routine? That strategy is the sign of a failed mmo... one grasping at straws to stall out players rather than entertain them with an actual game.
EDIT: Also super-cool that 10 years in they change the icons for Dynamis Currency. Game developers certainly have their priorities straight...
