Oh yay, wasn't enough for FFXIV to say "no you can't make machinima and MMD videos", now they're extending it to FFXI, too.

I'm really starting to hate SE when it comes to this.

hmm well who's to say that you can't make your own videos and keep them on your pc without sharing them with the internet?
Who would know? o.o

Anyway youtube has probably been the best unnofficial source of advertising for SE over the years and may have inspired many of their currant subs to keep paying or playing?

There's evidence out there that shows people who view music from the internet try to go out and buy it officially too.

Does this mean less videos on Youtube where people put in "Last Resort" in their videos about Dark Knight?

This is really quite surprising, this means they are going to actively take down and put strikes on youtube content creators that dare put out FFXI videos. Kinda dumb but that seems to be the JP game publishers way right now.

FFXIV is already pretty much black listed by every major youtube content creator, seems they are going for the full sweep.

Dear SE,

I came back because of user-made videos. Just so you know, you're losing free advertising. Smart move.

Yes, anything featuring FFXI content is only allowed to feature FFXI content (and your own voice). No other audio or video modifications are allowed whatsoever (other than editing or combining with other FFXI content). However, you're allowed things afterword so you can play "Last Resort" to a black screen once the FFXI footage has been shown. As long as you have permission from Papa Roach.

Since you're allowed your own voice though, you MIGHT be able to get away with singing "Last Resort" yourself, but that's for the lawyers to decide ;)

Music videos are such a huge part of fandom, though. Honestly, what they're asking us not to do is getting pretty close to violating Fair Use laws. It doesn't dilute the brand or put the game in a bad light to have an electronic remix of Recollection reminding us why we loved the game so much.

Exactly!
Also I should probably expect most of my videos to be struck off youtube as I got 40+ FFXI fan made videos of my own there.
My most viewed one is of primal rend because it's currantly linked to ffxiclopedia and has been for years.
I can apologise for the mis-typing of "prima rend" ><

With the whole "permission from original copyright holder thing" - I wonder if they got nag messages from certain industry studios about not policing their footage for copyright violations?

I wouldn't put it past the RIAA to start threatening to sue video game studios for videos that fans made with music from outside artists, because they're jerks like that.

If that's the case, the recollection video is .... probably okay, if the required "blah blah copyright square enix" watermark was added. Recollection is, in fact, FFXI music, and the dude who did the video got permission from the electronic artist who remixed it before he used it.

Tsch. There would be no point in complying with this, and, for the first time since I stopped, it makes me glad I'm not doing the blog thing anymore.

I'd blame SE but it's very obviously Youtube at this point. It was never a problem with XI..considering it's 11 years old.

Uhhh, is it just me or are most of the things that they tell you not to do either already covered by existing copyright laws, or unenforceable due to fair use provisions of the aforementioned copyright laws.

A part of Disney must have rubbed off on them a bit during the last round of Kingdom Hearts titles.

I'm more likely to blame SE on this because if it had been youtube, Blizzard and Cryptic would have issued similar policies.

Mind you that their EULA do have mention of not altering game assets and whatnot, but neither seems to really use that part of the EULA to shut down people's youtube channels and get then copyright strikes. Considering SE went out of its way to have the niconico douga counterpart of this video removed, I shouldn't be surprised about their turn but as mentioned earlier fan videos are essentially free advertising.

Also, couldn't attempting copyright strikes on videos with third party content potentially put them at risk from the owners of said third party content? A good enough lawyer could easily argue that taking down a video for the presence of something could be seen as a claim of ownership of said something.

edit: Heck, they would have to hire people to search for "final fantsy xi" in not only every language that has unicode characters (quick, change all the video titles to "۱۱ فاینال فانتزی"), but also misspellings, homophones (hard enough for languages like korean, near impossible to do for something like written Chinese, baidu mythical creatures anyone?), but they they also would need to watch every video all the way through to make sure there is no third party content ("Hey guys, I just uploaded my entire trip through the CoP storyline with a static, with the restriction that we do it at level 75 without using any jobs, abilites or items introduced from ToAU onwards" enjoy searching through all those videos for third party content SE).
