So my original Xbox crapped the bed finally. I bought a new one, but it won't let me install the game from my 2008 collection edition cd. It hangs up at 51% every time. I've tried every trick I could find that people posted about to make it work.

The cd is in perfect condition, so I know it isn't that. I'm assuming it's the ridiculous gamer tag / playonline connection that SE used to combat piracy. But I don't know and SE customer service told me there is nothing I can do but buy a new game. I asked them where i should do that since I can't but the Xbox version from Xbox live and the game is out of stock everywhere.

Does anyone know a way around this to make my old disks work on my xbox? Or is this it?

I don't have a pc to play it on so that is not an option.

Cheers all

Find someone who has a PC version and install it/play on your PC?

You can log into a POL ID/account from a PC or X360 (I used to do this myself).

EDIT: Wow, the console fanboyism in this thread is strong if I got defaulted for daring to suggest someone play FFXI on a ..... *gasp!* PC.

A PC that can run FFXI would have been cheaper than a new 360 from similar sources.

It may not be a 1 to 1 experience, especially if you use the chatpad, but to re-enforce what others are saying, a cheap laptop with HDMI hooked up to your TV via HDMI cable could handle FFXI more than fine, and you can still use the xbox controller. What I recommend doing is finding a good keyboard setting you like, and then using a button binding application like xpadder and matching your controller to keyboard settings (up left down right on analog stick might be w a s d, for example). That way I am comfortable if I sit down at a desk, but also comfortable if I pick up a controller. It has the added benefit of allowing you to bind macros in very specific ways, as well as allowing the use of windower's "spellcast" plugin feature (if that's still a thing, it's been a couple years or so for me) to allow for easier swapping of gear.

I've seen some controllers that mimic the xbox controller & chatpad combination available on amazon in the past, also claimed to be ps3 compatible for keyboard use so I imagine it'd work with pretty much any device that uses standard keyboards. Something like that might work best for you if you are familiar with the chatpad, because chatpad drivers for PC suck.

If you really can't bear to play it outside of xbox you should be able to get the whole enchilada on disc (including new expansion) depending on your region - what region are you in? There seems to be a lot of (overpriced) seekers collection discs on ebay and amazon for NA anyway.

But really, the experience on PC, even a crappy one, is much better. I am actually still regretting ignoring everyone's advice and buying an xbox to play while away from home rather than a cheap laptop.

Oh well, got my prouesse ring playing on my xbox in my hotel room, boring myself to sleep. Was at least nice to have those grainy graphics on the big screen.

I liked playing on xbox and I have lots of xbox games so I needed a new xbox for those, not JUST for ffxi. Besides I shouldn't have to invest in a brand new computer because SE won't let me use the disc I already own on a different machine I also own with an account I pay monthly for.

I asked their customer service if I could send in my old disc for a replacement, but that clearly received a quick we can't do that. And I'm not paying for an overpriced new copy of the game.

Life with FFXI will not be the same and I'll miss all the adventures all of you will no doubt have. But I've said this many times, FFXI is my first and last mmo, and I won't invest this kind of time again in a game.

I wish everyone the fondest of farewells.

Just curious, did you use the HDD transfer cable package for the new unit, or are you doing a fresh install from the disk to a completely fresh HDD?

You really, really don't need a brand new computer for this game. As the above person stated, it's cheaper to build a PC that can play FFXI at top settings than it is to get a new Xbox 360. This game is over a decade old, and computers could run it just fine a decade ago. Dual-core CPU's weren't common then, if they were even out. Now you can get quad-cores as "standard" for a PC. Unless you have a 1997 eMachines you almost certainly have a computer able to handle FFXI.

Just picked up the Seekers Ultimate Collection for $15 so that I could get two of the add-on scenarios, the 3 abyssea addons, and Seekers.

It was only $15 on Amazon, and it included the entire game and was only a 5.35GB download.

Nearly any computer made within the last 5 years should run FFXI as good as, if not better, than the 360.

I haven't tried the cable transfer, but I'll check into that. Thanks!

Just to touch back on the original post (and I'm sure you've already tried all of this), but from what I've read on other forums with similar problems (the half-way fail on install)

1) clear xbox cache following this guide:
http://support.xbox.com/en-US/xbox-360/system/clear-system-cache

2) re-install, if it fails again, it's fine, let it fail - you should still be able to use the POL launcher once you get that part on HDD (Note: need POL launcher audio enabled to successfully do this according to some posts). Open POL after the failure. One post says this:

"after you get the could not start pop up try select Playonline Viewer on your xbox menu and it should let you access it, then just reinstall POL", I believe he means "then just reinstall FFXI, from inside POL", but I'm not familiar with the console install process, so he might literally mean you need to reinstall just the POL portion, and THEN run POL to access FFXI and get updates etc. Not sure, but try tinkering around in that area.

3) Run updates / File checks etc from POL, and you should be good to play.

Good luck. I hope one of the other posters can help you out in terms of getting it to work on xbox again.

I wish you luck fixing this. A friend of mine, naming no names, had to send her Xbox in for repair.

Bad idea for FFXI-stuffies. She got a referb back with a improperly reinstalled FFXI, which she couldn't play. She wasn't even able to uninstall it..

She finally used the MP3 trick to reclaim her hdd space. That is, use a flash drive/MP3 player that uses usb to get it to load. Unfortunately for her, it wouldn't let her run FFXI but she was able to uninstall it! (Good for her!) (Blue Gatr post here detailing how to do this in case you have the issue.)

I hope that doesn't happen to you and you can fix it.

Well I'm getting closer. I have finally gotten it to install the software. But a new problem has arisen. I can't actually log in to playonline. Now it keeps telling my Playonline ID or password is wrong.

I even had customer service unlink my gamertag in the off chance that was causing a problem. That didn't correct it either.

When installing on a new system, is there some other password or information I should be using? I checked my password at the SE site and it works fine. I even changed it several times and tried using the new password to log in. That didn't work either.

I confirmed my playonline ID is correct. Password has been checked, double checked and triple checked. Chat support can't figure out what is causing the problem. The only variable left I can find is the gamertag.

I MIGHT just switch over to PC at this rate....

I remember dual boxing on X-box/PS2 before changing over to the PC. I would seriously invest in getting a cheap pc to play the game. The lag on X-box is horrendous. You may not notice it unless you're dual boxing.

In regards to your password issues:

There are multiple passwords in the POL process. It's quite cumbersome honestly, frustrating for a new person to set up, irritating for an old timer to try and remember. I have notes locked up with all my registration data because S/E is notoriously bad about providing recovery information - which isn't necessarily a terrible thing I suppose, less account compromises, but it's still terribly frustrating for the end user.

You will likely have:
A POL Account (Will look like 4 letters and 4 numbers, something like: KBCD6234)
A POL Account Password (this is whatever you made it, maintained from within POL itself as a soft layer of protection should you be using a laptop or something and not want others to even stumble into the basic info on our accounts loaded into POL)

The problem with POL passwords is that once you set them, you don't have to enter them repeatedly, so it's very easy to forget in a game where you play it for four or five years at a time. It's honestly an almost entirely pointless system - I believe they had planned on transitioning this service into the S/E Account style system over time, and it becoming a unified experience... they gave up on it and decided to go website based account management instead.

A POL Email Password (whatever you set it to, used to access your name@pol.com email information. This can be different from your POL password)

A Square Enix Account (this is a new "account container" if you will, where you maintain all your individual accounts for FFXI and FFXIV etc from the square enix members website)
A Square Enix Account Password

And finally you potentially have a Software Token that you can either generate login authentication for via an android / ios environment or a physical Key Fob Token that can do the same thing, with the added bonus of potentially being dropped in a cup of coffee with no way to recover the information or break the associated link with your account (Ouch! The horror stories we've heard with S/E support over the years!)
