Every time I get the desire to work on my crafting abilities I soon remember how frustrating the whole crafting thing is. First is the lack of crafting materials. In case you haven't noticed, the auction house is rather empty anymore and having to farm what you need sort of defeats the idea of taking a rest from the grind. Once you reach a higher level, leveling becomes abysmally slow. It seems there are crafting foods, but once again, you can't buy them anywhere and you need a special ability to make them. SE has a talent for making something that should be fun, very agonizing.

You'll be happy to know the last version update added "crafting kits" that can be bought from guilds. They are available every 5 levels till level 50. All you need is a crystal. You get an item back from it. So, no needing to chase down materials to level, at least up until 50!

Shortly after Abyssea came out I decided to craft some leather. It took 10k worth of crystals, 4 hours of farming to get from level 1 to 4 I think? Sheep skins cost about 1k per skin back then. I don't want to think about how crafting is like post 50 in current game.

Eh, yeah 50 is the real grind... but then again, materials are cheap as heck for the most part now too if you can find them on the AH. Like all the ores and logs etc. Also they stack now, so that's helpful.

I dunno, making it easier to get to 50 might get some people crafting which might make it worthwhile to put things on the AH again. We will see.

It's not as terrible 50-60 anymore since the cap increase, now it's 60+. I thought i'd seen somewhere that originally the crafting kits were supposed to go to 70, so that people could finally powerlevel through support crafts, but only 1-50 made the cut I guess. I will say that it's worth saving up a few hundred thousand to plow through that craft you've been dreading leveling due to cost/time investment (i.e. Goldsmithing/Smithing). I went from 18-42 yesterday during a full moon cycle using kits alone, since 20 and 40 kit levels make silver and mythril ingots, respectively. I think total loss was around 200k after NPC-ing and desynths.

Even if you hate crafting, it's worth gritting your teeth to get one up to 85+, so that you can sell some of the higher level AF upgrade materials and help balance out the cost in others (ex: Hepatizon ingot).

or you could have bought them from the leatherworking guild in south sandoria for about 20 gil each.

I'm thinking of adding the crafting kits to my cooking guide btw. I know mine is "Farm this, farm that, farm the other, oh and get this stuff from the npc" but sadly that's how crafting is now a days. Better sharpen the TH dagger.

But now with the crafting kits, it'll be easier to get to 50 at least.

Most crafts to 50 are not that hard if you are smart about how to do it. Goldsmithing though, I never did get it past 51. It was just getting too ridiculous with everything needing Gold and Mythril and those two metals are (or were) just ridiculous to get in any quantity.

You absolutely do need Lv45+ THF though (preferrably higher than that!), as farming without Treasure Hunter absolutely blows.

Do voidwatch. Seriously. Especially now that ores stack. Offer to buy ores and ingots from other at a competitive rate on the spot and people would happily toss them in their bazaar for you I bet. I get gold and mythril pretty much every run.

I used to always just npc ores cause they weren't worth taking up an AH slot, even if it meant getting half as much (or less) for them. Now I'm going to start saving stacks cause at least it's worthwhile to throw up on the AH (or one hopes anyway)

Yeah, Gold was pretty bad with the mythril phases, which I generally stuck too just because getting gold was even more annoying. I'm sure they'll add higher level kits eventually, but I'd be surprised if they ever go past 100.

They also added visual cues to the logging, mining and harvesting points. You no longer have to spam the target NPC macro if you're gathering.

I think they'll probably add kits for crafting up to whatever is dropping from current content. People aren't doing older stuff so those are the high demand areas, but you probably won't need too much help finding top tier ores, logs, ect.

The kits are nice, but they need to go beyond 50. Trouble with crafting past 50 is that the leveling rate slows down to a crawl. Then there is this thing that you can only take one craft to the max. Leveling should be determined by your level compare to the synth. Crafting a level 60 at lvl60 should give you the best leveling. Trying to craft a 65 item should give you slightly higher exp but with higher chance to fail.

Judging from the prices of these kits, kits beyond 60 would be crazy expensive anyways.

The Goldsmithing Lv50 kit is, IIRC, 17k gil per kit.

To get ONE level, you'd be blowing a good 200k (10-15 synths) on a good day using this kit. This might or might not be better than the alternatives, but if you consider that the kits only go up in price, a Lv60 kit could easily be 25k gil or more and you'd be looking at 300k per level.

Meanwhile, there are occasional recipes in the leveling path that might be quite a bit cheaper..

EDIT: This is assuming they did not change the skillup mechanics since a few years ago when I last crafted for skillups.
