Sounding more like an internet issue than something specific to your computer. College network? Mooching someone's wifi? Router changes at home?

Though, the more I think about it, I feel like there was a point where people could get some USB dongle or something they could've plugged in to have a "key" of sorts that wouldn't let people log in to the game without it. Different than the authenticator, but not something I think picked up popularity overall. Maybe that got activated somehow.

Thank you for trying to help.

I have sorted it out tonight, the short of it is that Kaspersky was conflicting somehow with FFXI, even though the pair had been fine together for 18 months (when I first started using Kaspersky).

I had tried loads of things, including disabling Kaspersky which did not help, and restoring to several different dates that also did not help. I spent hours sorting this out, in case it crops up for anyone in future. I had to completely uninstall Kaspersky to make this happen. I had no idea Kaspersky was the conflicting software and had no idea to suspect it either, I stumbled upon it merely as a process of elimination.

PS: Not leeching Wifi lol... I am on my own fibre optic connection at home and also the admin of the PC that has very little software installed on it... this came from nowhere, total bolt from the blue.

Yeah, I could see KS affecting that, then. Glad you figured it out. Sometimes those things'll update and suddenly flag things a false positives and all that good stuff when nothing has otherwise changed.

And while the wifi thing sounded silly, well, you'd be surprised... :P

Ha, yeah... no doubt there. I work in IT for a living, and WiFi has still managed to throw me for some loops. When we first moved into our new house a few years back, our WiFi would cut out periodically... I tried to pinpoint the source, debated on changing routers etc... but it had worked fine for years prior to that so I just had no idea what was "different". FINALLY one day I happened to walk out complaining to the wife that we need to do something to resolve this annoyance, and realized she had the microwave running... searched my memory and recalled the microwave on the last time it had happened, then remembered some small print about frequencies of other devices interfering with GHz ranges when I worked at staples years before, and put it together. After a couple tests we confirmed every time the microwave was turned on, the internet connection cut out (It was a different microwave than our previous home, DOH!). A quick change to dual-band in a higher frequency (... while not as good for range of wi-fi or as strong a connection in general ...) resolved the issue.

Yeah. We have a paper shredder here that basically makes every electronic in the house that's plugged in spaz when it's used. TVs will pixelate, speakers will cackle, that kind of thing. I'm always paranoid it's going to do some long lasting harm, but others here are just too paranoid about people seeing we got junk mail from such-and-such. :/
