I've read through the first page of threads and still have a couple questions. What server would be the most active? I left about the time Pandy shut down and I think I moved to Asura then quit. I miss the community. I played FFXI from NA release up until about 5yrs ago and am looking for an MMO. I beta tested 14 and have played a bit since then but it doesn't have the same feel. Am I just being nostalgic and remembering the "good ole' days"? I've had people tell me it's not the same game anymore and I shouldn't come back. Has it gotten easier to solo? I had pretty much everything above 50, DRK, DRG, and RDM were 75. I'm still on the fence and any info relevant about the people/game play now would be most helpful!

General answer is pretty much, "They're all the same with JP populations being higher than NA." So the time of day you play could be a factor, too. Instead of picking a specific server, the better option might be to pick one with a group of players willing to take you in right off the bat. Probably have better luck on the OF than here, though, but kind of a catch 22 since you'd have to sub again before you could post.

Asura is apparently the biggest english speaking server atm. yes you can solo now. you can call 3 npcs (characters from mission content) to assist you, and xp rates are much higher. it still does get quite grindy at upper lvls solo, so getting a group to kill stuff in abyssea is recommended at least to get to 75-99. you can buy tomes to lvl up any gimped skills. end game is mostly solo/low man content now, barely any alliance content left.
I like the sound of mostly low manned content. I always had the most fun in smaller groups and anything above 6 irked me a lot.
how difficult is it to start fresh? debating trying again, since im currently listening to the sound tracks. liked a realm reborn, but stopped when I didn't have the time/money. now I COULD start that one up again but I don't know.

It's easy to start fresh... you can get to 99 with 117 gear in not much time at all. The hard part is all the things you have to unlock (missions etc) and getting from 117 --> 119
117 to 119 will most definitely be the hardest part. Mission stuff is just tedium, especially with whatever forced day rollovers remain. Dynamis is a bit tricky only by virtue of some zone bosses having instant-death abilities.
