Oh wow. Last time I saw them do this they introduced the level cap going beyond 75 for the first time. I can hardly imagine what could come next.

Probably safe to bet there is a "big announcement" to be had with this. Potential topics would entail the next expansion and/or possible sub model tweaks. I could worst case scenario, too, but I'm not quite getting that vibe.

Yeah, I can't see the company calling a press conference for nothing but bad news. It's not really the sort of thing you emphasize.

I'm actually cautiously hopeful - partly I am hoping they will server merge a bit even though some folks would see that as dire, I would like it. The populations have gotten too low to be enjoyable a lot of the time. I mean, I am not helping at the moment since I am not subbed, but I don't see any reason to be subbed at the moment either because pick up groups have mostly died off, and that's how I do content. As much fun as soloing capacity points is... um no its not fun at all.

It would be nice if they dropped the sub price a bit, even if it meant they started selling cosmetic items and even trusts to make up the difference. Even just dropping the cost of extra mules would be nice. It gets a bit expensive as it is, and I can't go without them because they are my item storage banks...

But there are tons of items they could sell without effecting game balance. A potion that allows you to change race and gender for example would be nice. I'd actually like to be a taru again... this is the only main I've ever had who is not a taru.

I can't see them shutting it down though at this point. There is absolutely no way they aren't still making bank off the game, what with the skeleton crew they have producing content, and the people still subbed. Who knows though.

Sandwich the negatives between two positives. We're doing a server merge. PS2 is being discontinued, And there's a new expansion on the horizon!

Well, we'll see. I agree that it won't just be negative news, and it won't be the end of the game. F2P doesn't seem likely when the game is still so profitable. I'm actually in the camp that thinks we will get a new expansion in the future.

It would make sense to open a microtransaction store for ffxi, so that people can get items they can't get in the game anymore. No pay to win, but perhaps similar to ffxiv. I like how they are managing ffxiv. They should update the game for current directx versions because I am hearing windows 10 will not support anything prior to 11. A decrease in subscription service would also be welcome. But we will see.

Except..you know...the backend reasons you can't do this, which is why almost no other MMO can or will transfer characters between accounts.

Their original idea was to bring XI up to "standard" but decided that XIV would be the better choice given the amount of work they'd need to do in order to do that would have been better suited towards a new game altogether, and even then they didn't get to finish FFXIV. There were talks about F2P before and even back in 2001 they said they had plans for XI to have a cash shop of some kind but the infrastructure didn't support it.

I expect a drop of PS2 support for all data centers. It was limping along in Japan, but they've probably hit the absolute maximum lifespan for it.

Possibly an end to Xbox 360 support as well.

Even though I'm not actively playing FFXI, and haven't in YEARS, I could seriously see them shutting it down. I hate to even put life into that sentence, as I have a decade of memories and a lot of life-long friends met during the making of said memories.

I do, however, have a secret hope. It's what brought me back here looking for possibilities ...

Maybe it'll go Free to Play, and then I can come back home! I'd even be willing to navigate SE's ATROCIOUS Account management page to sign back up. . and I'd even subject myself to reinstalling and [I can't believe I'm saying this] UPDATING THE CLIENT.

My true hope beyond hope is a complete rewrite of the game code from the ground up, with DX12 support and the whole thing done PROPERLY [IE, not a console port]

Let's face it, however: The game is old, subscriptions have waned, and at some point expense is going to overwhelm income.

It leaves me very sad, and I sincerely hope I'm wrong, but I'm expecting the worst. :/

Without getting into an East Coast vs Appalachian vs Texas BBQ argument, I think there are some cities in Texas that consider themselves barbecue capitals of the world, like Lubbock, so the analogy holds.

(I'm from GA so the pork has to be disintegrating and the sauce has to be sweet, not terribly hot, for me to find it delicious.)

I am interested!

In Oct of 2014 SE Trademarked the name Master of Masks, or Keeper of Masks (something of Masks) with classifications for both Video Games, and Online Computer and/or Online Video Games in EU, US, and JP. Which means there is definitely the possibility of an expansion to FFXI coming in the near future the name scheme does kind of fit with the past FFXI expansion titles R OF Z, C OF P etc however this could also be entirely unrelated to FFXI or even Final Fantasy at all...The classifications trade marked are for a video game of some sort though.

I would love to see server merge, one thing ive noticed since I started playing again is a very notable dead time, usually MON-FRI all day. On the other hand, more people on each server means more competition in the things we all like to do to make monies!, but also cheaper products elsewise...Barring that free world transfers would be nice...

It has to be something big though, you don't call a press conference to tell the world and all news media that you are pulling the plug on support for PS2 and/or XBOX that is something your bury in POL update no one reads anyway.

My secret passion would be an entire overhaul of the game for modernization, or barring that, just going FTP =D.

Adventurers of Vana’diel, I have an announcement to make.

In a short time we will be commencing a new series of content known as “The Vana’diel Project,” which aims to expand the scope of Vana’diel as we head into the future.

As part of this tremendous initiative, we have announced new scenario content known as “Rhapsodies of Vana’diel.” This scenario will bring fresh story content and weave together the tales we have told across thirteen years of Vana’diel. Both the development and operations teams are working harder than ever before to deliver this package to you.

We have also announced FINAL FANTASY GRANDMASTERS, a new creation set in Vana’diel, and a native app project based on the MMM (Massive Multiplayer Mobile) concept. Keep your eye on these projects as they revolutionize the way players experience FINAL FANTASY XI.

FINAL FANTASY XI’s major version updates will conclude with the November 2015 iteration, when Rhapsodies of Vana’diel is scheduled to reach its thrilling climax. We will, however, continue implementing ordinary version updates that focus on balance adjustments and bug fixes.

Additionally, service for the PlayStation® 2 and Xbox 360® versions will end on or around March 2016, and we will focus our efforts on the Windows® version. Feedback posted on the forums and obtained through other avenues will inform quality of life improvements and balance adjustments, so do not hesitate to tell us your thoughts and opinions.

Take the opportunity to see, hear, and feel Vana’diel as it exists today—a Vana’diel created not just by the developers, but by each and every one of you.

We eagerly await you in the land of Mithra and moogles.

Conference Digest

Today we announced a new initiative for FINAL FANTASY XI.

Entitled The Vana'diel Project, this drive consists of three different plans to expand and develop FINAL FANTASY XI to further improve user satisfaction under changing market conditions. Since service began in 2002, FINAL FANTASY XI and its virtual world of Vana'diel have continued to evolve along with our players, and this May marks the beginning of the fourteenth year of operation.

The Vana'diel Project Summary

1. Rhapsodies of Vana'diel: FINAL FANTASY XI's Ultimate Scenario Content

The first chapter in FINAL FANTASY XI's final main scenario, Rhapsodies of Vana'diel, will be implemented in the May 2015 version update.
This scenario will serve to tie together fourteen years of FINAL FANTASY XI, and we aim for it serve as the ultimate compilation of all we have accomplished to date, with major characters from throughout the game's history making appearances--a feat that only a game as storied as FINAL FANTASY XI can offer.

The scenario will consist of three separate chapters, debuting in the May, August, and November version updates, respectively.
Coming along with the scenario are exciting new battle content, never-before-seen rewards, and a variety of other additions to engage players of all different stripes.
We plan for this to be a grand conclusion to the FINAL FANTASY series' first MMORPG--and indeed, the first console MMORPG--in a way that will be recorded in the annals of the genre's history.

FINAL FANTASY XI's major version updates will conclude with the implementation of the final chapter of Rhapsodies of Vana'diel, but there will continue to be minor version updates that address bugs and contain various balance adjustments.

Further, PlayStation®2 and Xbox 360® service will cease in March 2016. We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to those who have enjoyed FINAL FANTASY XI on these platforms and to those who have assisted us in bringing Vana'diel to you.

Going forward, the team will renew its focus on providing an enjoyable FINAL FANTASY XI experience on the Windows platform.

We have also decided to hold a new event known as The Goddess's Gala as a show of appreciation for those who have loved Vana'diel throughout the years.

The Goddess's Gala is a series of various campaigns that have been held previously to great acclaim and can be enjoyed by both regular players and returnees alike.

These campaigns are not limited to in-game events, as we are also considering a welcome back campaign as well as a variety of anniversary events. We will work our utmost to bring everyone who has ever enjoyed Vana'diel an event to remember and hope that players both new and old will take this chance to visit our humble land and her people once more.

The staff is working tirelessly day and night to make Rhapsodies of Vana'diel the most spectacular event for FINAL FANTASY XI, but we also recognize that adjustments to currently existing content are equally as critical. Please continue submitting your feedback and making your voices heard on the official forums.

The development and operations teams alone could not have brought Vana'diel this far; it is because of all of you that adventures in Vana'diel have come to life. The world that you have created together with us is what FINAL FANTASY XI truly is, and nothing can ever change that.

We earnestly look forward to continue working with you in the future.

2. FINAL FANTASY GRANDMASTERS: A New Online RPG for Smartphones Set in the World of Vana'diel

FINAL FANTASY GRANDMASTERS is a full-scale online RPG for smartphones that shares the characters and world setting of FINAL FANTASY XI.
Players are able to freely combine their favorite jobs and dazzling equipment to create, strengthen, and power up their characters. Chat and communicate with those you meet, engage in real time cooperative battles, and make new friends as you vanquish foes and assist allies.

Keep your eye on this new generation of FINAL FANTASY scheduled for release in 2015, brought to you in all its glory in collaboration with Crooz Inc., creators of numerous smash hit social games such as The Knights of Avalon.
* At present, the game is scheduled for release in Japan only.

3. A Native App Project Providing A Full-Fledged FINAL FANTASY XI Experience on the Mobile Platform

Going forward, FINAL FANTASY XI will aim to transform into a completely new format on the mobile environment so that players can easily experience Vana'diel whenever and wherever they want.
Battles optimized for touch-screen interfaces will feature further improvements to basic FINAL FANTASY XI systems such as jobs and skill chains, providing a speedier and more user-friendly experience, and features such as improved partying systems and solo activities enable players to find a playstyle that suits them.

Additionally, dynamic events that spawn under a variety of conditions help build the world in a way that only a mobile game can.
We are pleased to welcome as our partner NEXON, Co., Ltd., a company that boasts a variety of experiences and a world class track record in both developing and operating MMORPGs on mobile platforms.
We plan to extend service to Japan, Korea, and North America, as well as Europe and the rest of Asia, with an eye toward release in 2016. Be on the lookout for a renewed FINAL FANTASY XI as a massive multiplayer mobile role playing game combining MMOs with mobile devices.

Get ready to experience these new projects that further expand on FINAL FANTASY XI and the world of Vana'diel.

Ask us any questions about the Vana'diel Project.

As an Xbox 360 player does this mean that I (and everyone else on the 360) will not be able to log in and play as of March 2016?

If so then that is the end for me (and likely thousands of others) as this is the only format I have ever played on.

Edit: My partner who played on PC mostly only played when I played (on 360) and this will also mean the end of them playing...

I know the servers are not exactly over populated as it is but this news will be a massive nail in the heart taking not just PS2 users, x360 users but also likely many PC users who played with the console users...

Well, dropping PS2 support was pretty much inevitable, and i can't see them supporting X-box over Sony. This gives them the opportunity to truly upgrade the game, and maybe you will see it on PS4 one day.

Not as exciting as i hoped, new "expansion", new affiliate mobile stuff which is kind of interesting, not talk of server merging and they told everyone they are killing console support. Oh well, sounds like we might at least get one last new area to visit since the sign off was "See you in the land of Mithra and Moogles" maybe we will at last be able to see the Mithra homeland...maybe not.

In all fairness, I think we can say [as my old Linkshell Leader phrased it] "We are at the beginning of the End"

Looks like this will be the last content addition in the life span of FFXI.

I never even got through 1/4 of the original content, so even now it'd take me another DECADE to get caught up.

I am, however, EXTREMELY INTRIGUED by the announcement of a mobile version. It worries me, however, that the aim is to provide the FFXI experience "wherever and whenever you wish"... that has a strong wind of "single player" attached to it. They mention CO-OP, but it doesn't sound like an MMO to me.

Either way, I'm feeling nostalgic now. . . and while my original character is lost behind a purposely deleted security code, I have a second laying around somewhere ....

Anyone have a copy of Parallels 10 they can give me? I don't wanna bootcamp ; )

So this is it... Come next year I'll actually have to say my goodbye to this game. I'll admit, thinking about it gives me a bit of a lump in my throat.. It's gonna be hard saying goodbye to my characters...
#26 Mar 19 2015 at 7:12 AM Rating: Excellent
You can already practically play the game entirely solo with the Trust system. If they expand that to include instanced fights, not just open world parties, they've already got all the non-raid content available to single players.

I used to joke that FFXI would run on a cell phone. Guessing the mobile platform will be iOS and Android.

As for the shut down, if it's not until 2016, that's plenty of time for you to wrap up and finish the new scenarios they're adding on 360 or PS2.
