Video crash in ffxi. (And only FFXI)Follow

First up system specs.

Windows 7 64b
i5 4690k
GTX 970
256 GB Samsung EVO SSD
16gb RAM

All installed into an ASUS Z97-A Mobo.

I will be playing ffxi and without warning I will lose video on my monitors. No notification of a crash, no error message other than POL crash, nothing. Its like someone unplugs my monitor from my computer and immediately plugs it back in.

This issue only happens in ffxi. I can play any other game and not have this issue so I do know that it is not related to a bad video card or a bad driver. I also had a video card temp sensor running and it is stable at 73c. (a bit high but nothing extreme)

I finished up yesterday playing eve online on three screens for over 14 hours and the only crash I observed was a node crash from the server kicking everyone off that was in that system. This is a brand new computer and is working beautifully, however the issue comes when I try to play ffxi.

I have read other threads stating the issue was caused by newer gtx cards playing ffxi. Ive read about disabling nvidia hd audio, graphics stabilization, turning off weather effects and shadows, even reinstalling ffxi. Nothing seems to help. Has anyone had this same issue happen to them, and what did you do to fix it? Outside of buying new hardware I am ready to try just about anything.

Try some older drivers. I've never had that particular problem but I've had some crazy driver-related glitches. Anytime i update my Nvidia card it seems like a 50/50 shot at messing FFXI (and ONLY FFXI) up. When it goes wonky I uninstall the new one, reinstall the old one, and just hope for better luck next version.

Edit- Google censor never fails to amaze.

OK think I have figured it out. Seems to be weather related. Before I could not run more than one client without it crashing every 20-30 minutes. I thought I had turned off weather before but apparently it didnt take. Afterwards I was able to run 4 chars at the same time with no issue.

It seems that, for now at least, I have found my issue. Will post again if this didn't work. Also was going to say that the 970 is a newer card and it is, unfortunately, not compatible with most of the older drivers.

Many people have had similar problems with this game and newer GTX video cards. In addition to disabling weather, you might also disable shadows. Additionally if you run a Windows Aero theme, consider going to a basic one. I was having really bad crashing issues in specific zones, and they vanished completely when I turned off transparency on my taskbar.
