Returning after 10 years to finish up the story. Actually no... I am creating a new character because I have lost my old log-in details for good. Just some questions:

1) I know i need to get to lvl5 to get trust npcs; and i can get 2 more other trust npc from the other 2 nations; however, how do i travel from my starting nation to the other 2 at lvl5 x.x im gonna get slaughtered so bad...

2) should i be mixing book exp with normal killings to lvl up? or should i just focus on books?

3) I understand Asura and Bahamut are still quite populated?

4) I just wanna finish all the stories - is abyssea something i should look into?

5) is it possible to do dynamis on my own?

Welcome back. I returned a few months back to do the same...finish some stories.

1) Don't worry about it at lv5. The only way you are going to get there is like in the old days, you are going to need to walk there.

2) Yes. Slaughter everything in your path. Go back in town and find the correct NPC to start RoE quests. Do these as well (will be like gain 10 crystals [aka have signet on], kill X mob Y times). It adds even more EXP. You will use the sparks earned later for base il117 gear at 100 and can also use the sparks if you cap fast (can hold 50k iirc) to make gil.

3) Asura seems to be the most populated English speaking server. If you are a fan of the site reddit, the reddit LS is on Asura.

4) I can't remember there being an actual story to Abyssea. More like where people went to level and gain (at the time) gear.

5) Yes.

My not pro-tips:

Focus on leveling. Should not take you very long to go from 1 to 20. Once 20 go to Jeuno and gain Chocobo. Then go visit the other 2 nations for Trust.

Touch all home points so you can warp. If you see floating books (open map, if you have the maps, there should be a small book icon on most) touch them for warping as well. Makes getting around faster.

Try to get to 100 ASAP imo. Then go back and do nation quest > RoZ > CoP > WotG > SoA while doing RoV along the way.
I'm currently working on WotG.

It might be faster just to complete 10 record of eminence objectives and start unity concorde, as there is objectives for obtaining a tank, dd, healer, and support trust that was added in the last update. Depending on which unity you join, the unity leader alter ego can be the best healer/support or average dd you can get. Recommend Yoran/Apururu or Sylvie's unity.

Depends on the current exp chain campaign, might be faster to use the zone's Records of Eminence objective.

Pretty much.

Abyssea is still needed for empyrean armor and materials. Trusts are allowed in abyssea as well.

5) is it possible to do dynamis on my own?

With trusts added its even easier.

I haven't posted in 7 years, but I just had to chime in on this. Abyssea definitely has an actual story! In fact, it was one of my favorite stories in the whole game! You won't find much in the way of cutscenes, and the exposition is short as well, but it's a very interesting storyline. Just make sure you do it AFTER completing Chains of Promathia. Don't miss out on it, please! It's also kind of fun to approach it as a bit like a mystery. Why are these familiar zones so crazy and infested by monsters? What happened? (The story reveals the answer)

The rest of the advice given to shuonz is right on the money though.

I'll add that it's quite viable to level whm or rdm up to 25 with just one trust, at which point you can just stealth past whatever you can't fight to get to the other nations.

Use tabs to get reraise. Buy a reraise scroll from the gate guard. Buy 2 or 3 sneaks and invisibles from the auction house. You should be able to do the whole trip from one city to the next with a level 1 player, maps of the areas, and items I mentioned. I used to belong to a linkshell that had races to to Jeuno as level 1 characters without the meds and re-raise.

you can get five new trusts from RoE right from the start (after you get your first trust)

The best part of Final Fantasy XI is its rich storyline. It separates this game from other MMORPGs. I chose to give my character a storyline that goes along with the game's storyline. I find that this is a more fun way to play the game. Playing the game just to fight in the endgame and collect elite equipment is very boring and is totally missing the main objective of the game, which is to guide your character through the storyline which is to save the world.
