More than somewhat biased toward Sandy. Prices also vary depending on server.

Good advice on the armor and weapons, though. It's cheaper, the supply is infinite, and NPCs don't jack up prices. I also recommend checking the NPC price on items you want to sell. Sometimes you can get more from the NPC than the AH. It's not often, but it's worth checking especially on items like low level magic scrolls (Sneak, Paralyze, Bar- anything, etc).

Not too bad but it seems this guide is targeted at a specific area of leveling. I would fix it up a tad to give new players an idea of what to expect around each of the starting cities. What would work for Sandy or Bastok might not work for Windy, especially since all three cities allow for starting their crafting in the fields.

Bastok:
Copper Ingots= 1 Fire Crystal and 4 copper ores.
Bronze Ingots= 1 Fire Crystal and 1 Tin Ore, 3 copper ores.
The worms in the Gustabergs tend to drop alot of ores, might as well make the best use of them to conserve space and make money.

Beeswax= Fire crystal, 1 distilled water and 3 beehive chips.
The bees on the hills in North and South Gustaberg drop these quite frequently and make a good start into Alchemy.

Sheep Wool= 1 Wind crystal and 2 sheep skins.
There are sheep on those hills in North and South Gustaberg and this is a quick start into Leathercrafting. It also helps to save on inventory space.

San d'Oria:
Copper Ingots, Bronze Ingots and Sheep Wool are also available to be made in this region.

Grilled Hare: 1 Fire crystal, 1 dried Majoram, 1 piece of hare meat.
Plenty of rabbits in both East and West Ronfaure. Dried Majoram can be purchased cheaply in Rambrow's Grocery in South San d'Oria whenever Sandy is in first place, IIRC.

Arrowwood Lumber= 1 Wind Crystal and 1 Arrowwood log.
You can purchase hatchets in the Sundries shop in South Sandy and do some logging in between battles in East Ronfaure.

I would suggest something for the rabbit hides or selling the batwings but these can be used in repeatable quests for San d'Oria fame.

Windurst:

I need to ask someone else to fill in this portion since I spend very little time in Windurst.

I was in a rush earlier, so here's a little information for Windy. I started there, had Level 4 fame by the time I had my subjob and only did that stupid sardine quest once. This is probably the only thing the Brady guide was actually good for.

Tiny mandys and bumblebees will drop earth and wind crystals. Keep these or hang onto them for some basic clothcrafting. The bumblebees also drop rarab tails, a food that can be turned into the Star Onion Brigade in Windurst Walls. Also hang onto that 2-leaf mandy bud.

Savanna Rarabs will drop rabbit hides, hare meat, earth crystals, and one of 4 different pieces of dropped mail. The mail pieces are rare/ex and can be turned in at any time (more gil for all 4 pieces of course) to the Hume male at the Windurst Walls AH.

Carrion Crows drop bird feathers, bird eggs and fire crystals. The eggs and crystals, combined with distilled water from the tavern in Windurst Waters are excellent for beginner cooks. If you don't want to cook, fire crystal stacks sell for a pretty penny at the AH. Use one of the feathers with your 2 leaf mandy bud for a repeatable quest at the Aurastery in Windurst Waters.

Crawlers. Bring your antidotes with you unless you're a WHM with Poisona and some MP left. Poison Breath has left many a lowbie making a desperate run for their MH, or just praying it will wear off before they die.

However, they're worth the risk. Earth crystals drop, which will make you gil by volume alone. Then there's the rare/ex Smooth Stone. This can be turned for a repeatable quest that gives a horn hairpin the first time, and about 200 gil each subsequent time. However, the taru lady (rear building of the tavern) is picky. She won't take every Smooth Stone. Meteorite is another rare/ex drop that can be used for a non-repeatable quest in Windurst Walls.

For every 3 Crawler Calculi you turn into the Mithra at the dhalmel farm in Windurst Woods, you will get 600 gil and fame. She will also take silk thread, but don't do it.

Silk thread is the reason to kill Crawlers. It's up to about 40K/stack on Ifrit.

The higher level bees and mandys in Saruta will continue to drop wind and earth crystals. The Giant Bees will also drop the coveted beehive chips, as well as honey and insect wings. Mandragoras drop their 2 leaf buds, plus cornettes and the rare/ex drops of 4-leaf mandy buds or Yuhtunga sulfur. Any of the latter 3 can be turned into the taru with the first house on the left in Windurst Walls if you zone from Windurst Waters. It's a repeatable quest and you don't have to zone.

If you haunt the rivers and sea cliffs, the River Crabs drop water crystals and rock salt, and occasionally Remi Shells or land crab meat. Remi shells can go to a Mithra in Windurst Woods (not far from the dhalmel farm) 2 at a time. This is a better deal than turning in beehive chips IMO.

Pugs drop lightning crystals and pugil scales, which are used in bonecrafting.

Goblin Thugs are good for fire crystals and the occasional Wild Onion drop. Wild Onions are another good way to make some gil. Weavers also drop fire crystals, the Goblin Fishers drop lightning crystals.

Then there's the Yags and their infamous necklaces. Trading 4 Yag necklaces to Nanaa Mihgo in Windurst Woods will get you 200 gil and Norg - not Windy - fame. Synthing a Yag Necklace with a wind crystal will result in grass thread, and is an excellent way to start clothcrafting. Hang onto the thread, then use some of that mountain of earth crystals to turn the thread into grass cloth. Synthing a Yag necklace with a lightning crystal results in a copper ingot for those interested in starting goldsmithing. Yags drop wind crystals.

Once you can move into the lower passes of Tahrongi, the saplings drop seeds. Sell em in stacks, or garden for some hassle-free gil. The mandys there, called Pygamoi, also drop the Yuhtunga sulfur used for the quest and thieves can steal Saruta cotton from them, which they also occasionally drop. This can be used to continue your clothcraft leveling or sold for 5-10K/stack depending on your server.

Good tips indeed. This weekend while farming necklaces for norg fame, I decided to harvest. I'd never done HELM before, and I really hate myself for never doing it because I only went through maybe 5 sickles to get a whole stack of red moko grass (goes for 3k apiece or 35k a stack on my server). It took awhile to get, so I don't know if Giddeus is the best place to harvest, but that's just a suggestion for people who are camping the NMs there or who are on their way to a BCNM or are raising their Norg fame.

I never saw anyone else there harvesting, although I don't know anything about HELM etiquette, so that was probably a good thing.

Great post! I just wanted to add a little bit about gardening. You can look up recipes on Pikko's Pots. These are not guaranteed, as all gardening recipes have a random element, so there is a chance of growing several different things from the same ingredients.

First, buy 1-10 pots from an NPC in one of the starting cities for about 1000 gil each. (You can have up to 10 in your mog house, but I recommend starting with 2-3 until you know if you like gardening.) Next, put them in your mog safe. Select Furnishings from the Mog House menu (can only be selected in your home nation). Select Layout, and place your pots in your mog house.

Next, buy or farm some seeds. I recommend starting with vegetable seeds, as they are not as expensive as grain seeds, and they only require one crystal feeding. Later you can grow tree saplings from tree cuttings. You can grow elemental ores from tree saplings, but don't do this until you have a lot of gil to play with. Results are not guaranteed, and there is nothing worse than spending 100-200,000 gil, waiting a full real-life month, and getting nothing but cinnamon. (No, I'm not bitter. ><) You can also garden with Fruit Seeds and Cactus Stems, but I haven't tried these.

Place the seeds in your Mog Safe. Select Gardening from the Mog House menu. Select one of the pots from the list and select Plant Seeds.

Try to examine your plants once per real-life day. Eventually, Moogle will tell you your plants are not doing very well. This means they are ready to be fed a crystal. The type of crystal is part of the recipe. Some recipes do not use a crystal. Don't let Moogle worry you, your plant will be fine! Just continue checking it as normal, and eventually, he will tell you your plants are doing well again. Side note - if you do not feed your plant a crystal, it will grow a little slower.

After awhile (about a week for vegetable and grain seeds), Moogle will tell you your plants are ready to harvest when you check them. You will also notice they are glowing. Very pretty. Be sure to select Harvest, not Dry Flowers. Drying your flowers will make them a furnishing, but you will not get anything from them. The items harvested will go in your mog safe, so be sure to get them into your Items before you go to the auction house!

I started gardening at about the Dunes level. It's great for any level, and you don't have to spend any gil to skill up. As you get more gil, you can try different kinds of pots and some of the more expensive recipes. If you decide you want to try growing ores, Ariah's FFXI Garden is a great place for tips.

Additional farming opportunies in Windurst:

There are 6 Horotuto ruins towers (3 on each map) in Sarutabaruta.

In West Sarutabaruta, the southernmost tower contains Cardians ranging from 2's to 10's, the middle tower contains 2 bat spawns (killable at lvl 1), and the northernmost tower contains goblins and bats. Through the cracked wall (you will want to be in the high teens/early 20's before you go through here) in the Northern tower are skeletons, jellies, higher tier goblins and ghouls.

In East Sarutabaruta, the southernmost and middle tower contain goblins and bats in the main buildings. The southernmost also has an additional mob, the Balloon. Through the cracked wall in the middle tower, you will find jellies (lower level than the west sara ones), skeletons, goblins, bats and beady beetles. The northernmost tower contains Cardian's 2's and 3's. At levels under 30 it is not advised to certain doors in this building, as there are 3 nm's that spawn behind closed doors here.

Mobs found Horotuto Inner
Mobs found horotuto outer

All the gobs in the main rooms of the towers are the fire crystal dropping type, along with various cloth items (weavers) and wild onions (thugs). They also drop masks and armor.

Skeletons drop bone chips (about 2k a stack on my server), earth crystals, and very occasionally the Ceremonial Dagger

Jellies drop water crystals and slime oil.

Beetles drop Insect wings, Beetle shells, beetle jaws and Horotuto chest keys.

Balloons drop Fire crystals, bomb ash, and coarse boomerangs.

Cardians drop crystals and cardian cards. Each suit drops certain types of crystals. The coins drop the only light crystals available to be farmed around Windurst. The Cardian cards can be NPC'd. Be warned, they link and use a lot of magic, but they can be a great way of grabbing a few stacks of crystals.
