This works.

I was told by 'Square-Enix' that you need a Static IP on your PS2 with Port Forwarding enabled for the Ports listed on their website FFXI uses under the Platforms > Windows tab.
http://www.playonline.com/ff11us/envi/win/win01.html?pageID=win

The ports are:
TCP 25, 80, 110, 443 or 50000 - 65535,
UDP 50000 - 65535,
...and maybe UDP 53.

Here are a couple links to guide you through it.

This has additional information concerning the Network Adapter, if you need it.

Even if this does work for everyone on PS2, which I'm not saying is going to happen, the fact remains that there's absolutely no reason anyone should have to jump through these hoops to play a game they've been playing perfectly fine for years under their current setup.

Actually - this does not work. I can confirm that.

My PS2 is wide open to internet traffic (don't care to much about my PS2), has a static IP address (always has), and I am having trouble downloading the most recent update (from today).

My PC - on the other hand, has more locks and chains on it than a bank's money vault, is closed to all internet traffic (except that which it initiates of course), and it downloaded the update in 2 seconds flat.

Today seems to be the oppisite of what was happening to me saturday - where my PS2 worked but my PC did not.

I tried restarting the downloading numerous times and it sits at 0% and never goes any further. Turned off my PS2 turned it back on and logged back in. POL came up, goes to do the FFXI update - 0% for hours on end.

Strange how today - it is oppisite from what happened to me saturday.
