Hey Everyone,

I just started playing last night so I figured I'd post about my first evening and the issues I had. First and for most it is not very straight forward how to do a lot of things, if I hadn't studied up online (on this forum and other places) before playing I would have spent my entire night trying to figure out how to talk to people...

My biggest problem last night was dying! lol, the Check mechanism worked well for levels 1-3 but when I hit level 4 I couldn't fight anything that was ranked at a decent match. I wonder if Check doesn't assume you are equiped to your level or something like that. I haven't been able to find much for equipment before level 7. You have level 1 gear, then you have level 7 gear. I'm pretty stuborn and kept on thinking if I just had those extra 5 HP and MP that I had lost in the previous battle I'd be able to win... Or if I make sure to blind first... Nope. I got spanked multiple times by a Decent Match without even making it look decent. The second problem I had was the inability of getting any of the other low level guys running around to group with me, it might have been that no one wanted to group with a black mage or they didn't like my cologne but I tried to be polite when asking and the only responce I ever got back was "Dont speak English". (That was only once). Now I understand that at low levels you really don't need a group and can solo pretty easily up to like 20 or something... But I really wanted to kill that dumb guy! I did have a couple of higher level guys stop by say hi and buff me up with some spells which was appreciated.

The other thing that I couldn't figure out is how do I get my pretty little berret (the thing that lets you group with higher level person) or whatever it is that you get when you use a Gold Pass? I went to the Gold Pass guy and he gave me 12 chocobo tickets but that certainly doesn't help me much yet.

So that was my first night. Couldn't get a group but did enjoy soloing. Couldn't find any equipment that would help me all that much (Despite someone giving me 20000 gil). Check isn't all that accurate so I lost a good couple hundred experience.. lol... I'm sure this will feel like nothing in a couple levels. All in All I had a good time and was sad to log off and go to bed. Look forward to getting back on tonight. Only 12 more hours! It did leave me looking forward to leveling up which is always good. I was dissapointed by the lack of groupaging (talking like a Taru.. not a Tatu, I'll never make that mistake again... Look at my post on Easy to swallow for more details). Hopefully I'll find a couple of guys who will be willing to level with me a bit in the coming nights. I look forward to being at my full potential and just nuking things like a good black mage, instead of dying in 3 hits. 5 deaths in my first 4 hours of play. Must be a new record or something! (this time includes running around lost in side of Windy :) )

Thanks for reading!

Wassup,

first of all /check is your friend and it's good you are using it. It only takes into account your level vs. their level, your accuracy vs. their evasion and your attack vs. their defence.

You wanna stick to fighting decent challenges w/ low evasion or defence. Are you red mage or black mage?

At low levels melee characters can take on even match as well.

Also always remember to have signet. It gives you a boost in stats when fighting some mobs.

Also you won't party up until at least lv10. So don't worry about partying before that. The first ten levels are gonna be slooooooooow as you learn what to fight and what not to fight and how to and how not to fight.

Good luck.

btw of the three admins here I am the coolest so if you need something done lemme know. The others have got like level 3 highest characters on their server. I know, it's really bad huh.

The check sytem is pretty accurat (up until lvl 15 or so but theres a reason for that which I wont get into right now) the thing is some jobs arent too well built to handle things as easy as others... for example if you were a warrior or monk or something like that I can assure you would have flattened that dcnt challenge (or even match) mob like it was nothing... but youre a mage which has little to no dfense, doesnt hit very hard with melee and although you do have magic I believe you dont have the sleep spell at that level so after that first cast the mob is right up on you hitting you and most likely interrupting your casting thus making it difficult to get another spell off resulting in you dying.

Thanks I appreciate that. It's good to know that people aren't grouping with me simply because it isn't necessary yet, instead of because I suck, or my job sucks or something like that. Certainly seems like the first 10 levels here I will be killing the same stuff over and over and over. Which isn't a big deal you get pretty good at timing spells and how many spells I should cast vs letting the beat down happen at it's own rate and what overall is faster. So far I've discovered that I should just Nuke the crap out of mobs as it really doesn't take long to rest up. Is there an official time or how do they determine the heal time? It seems to take a minute or so for me right now... I probably could have hit level 5 last night pretty easily if not for me being so determined to destroy that dumb guy who tore me apart 3-4 times.

Oh, I am a Black Mage to answer your question.

Another question, I've noticed that Poison and ... shoot what is the other one... oh Blind don't really seem to make much of a difference at my level. I suppose these will make a bigger difference once I can fight that Decent Match guy and win... maybe once I hit level 5. Does that sound about right to not get much out of those spells yet?

Thanks!

Thank you for posting this, it's refreshing to remember what starting out as a new player is like!

A little hint: As a Black mage you may want to consider taking on Worms exclusively for solo XP as long as you can, there may be some travel involved but they are a nice safe source of xp and you can possibly solo them up to Even Match to Toughs without suffering much if any damage the key being to run out of range when you see them casting on you.

Ooooh, blm is one of the roughest jobs to lvl without a sub. It should get a little easier once you get bind.

And don't feel bad, I can never get to lvl 10 unless I duo with someone. For some reason I always seem to find the Decent Challenge who's really an Incredibly Tough in disquise.

If you're on Fenrir look me up I'll duo with you till you can hit the dunes. I have several jobs around lvl 4.

Thanks,

Tons of worms in Ronfaure. You can also find them in Bastok as well. maze of Shakarami will defintaly be your friend around lvl 10ish.

If you put a thread on carbunkle's forum you might be able to get an escort to Sandoria if you don't have access to the maps, or if you're like me and can get lost in the starter areas even after a year of playing.

The name is Altis. Lv4 BLM. I tend to play from the times of 8-12 Central Time. Tonight I may not get on until later (9-9:30), I may be taking the kids to Awana.

Thanks,

If you have a bit of extra gil, may I suggest picking up some Pamama au Lait from the drinks section of the AH? It's a 2 hp / tick regen that lasts for 10 minutes. It can really speed things up, and those extra hit points really can make a difference.

Easy prey is your friend. It is easier to mass slaughter 10 easy prey then to kill 1 single Even match. When I solo my early lvl now, I still go for mass easy prey kill route.

We have a running joke here in FFXI that:

Too weak to worth while - It will be a fight to the death, but you get some chance of coming out alive.
Easy prey - Yup...exactly what it means...You are an easy prey to the enemy
Decent Challenge - It is a challenge alright, now can someone please raise me?
Even Match - You have a raise on the way right?
Tough - You might as well go afk mid fight, because it won't make a different
Very Tough - I hope your HP is close by.
Incredibly Tough - Where would you like me to dig your grave?

Ok....I'm just joking but to certain jobs at higher lvl, it is pretty true. If you are playing blm at the beginning lvl, not only I would cast spell on the enemy, I would bonk them on the head with my wand too...you ARE using wand right? RIGHT???

Selbina milk can be had for exceptionally cheap if your country owns Zulkrum region. 1hp per tick regen for 90hp and it cost what? 10gil each? And they are stackable!

For MP, you can use juices to recover it.

Or a good alternative would be to find the Selbina Milk vendor if he/she is available. those stack. quite a valuable item.

If you're taru, chances are that you're from windurst? please confirm.

Assuming you're from windurst, the safest way i was able to level from 1-12ish was to stick with the kiddie pools just outside of the city gates up until about 7 or 8 and then head to Outer Horutoto Ruins tower, the tower located at F-4 in West Sarutabaruta, and have fun killing the goblins and bats found within. quick, easy exp is still good exp in my opinion. with the repetition of killing Easy Preys, you can develop your strategy to move onto harder things, or by level 12, you'll be ready to face one of your first parties in Tahrongi Canyon, Konshtat Highlands, La Thienne Plateau or even... Valkurm Doom. @_@;

Outer Horutoto Ruins (1) on this map:

Oh and now that you mention milk dont do what I did and confuse Mary's Milk for Selbina milk..... I took some mid fight for regen thinking it was a more powerful regen than selbina milk.. only to be put to sleep mid fight and die from it...... so yeah Selbina Milk not Mary's milk

Maybe it's just me, but i like soloing all the way up to 20, particularly in Tahrongi Canyon. You get beehive chips from Killer bees, grain seeds from saplings, silk threads from crawlers, and fire crystals from akbaba...and Valkurm Dunes sucks ***.

So I should stock up on juices and milk and destroy easy prey. That was my new game plan anyhow. Sick of getting destroyed by things that shouldn't destroy me! :). I might go searching for Worms tonight... Should be fun to see if I can make it all the way out there without getting lost.

I believe what you are looking for is "Juices" which give you mp every tick as opposed to the au lait which is HP. If I may add in my 2 gil...This is probably too late to affect your BLM but for your next job, head to Bastok (Bastok Mines to be exact). If you look on your map you can see "Zeruhn Mines" labeled. This area is wonderful for new characters

1. Low level worms (and bats when you get tougher)

2. Convenient Location (easy to get to, easy to get back to when you have to home point from death)

3. Gil (there are a few mining points you will stumble across, the mobs also drop "Zeruhn Soot" which is used in a repeatable quest, other loot like bat fangs and such)

4. Fame (by repeatedly turning in Zeruhn Soot to the NPC located just outside Zeruhn in Bastok Mines named Gerbaum, you will get a good start to raising your fame. This is needed to be able to access other quests.)

I hope this helps. I'm on Carbuncle too if you need any additional help.

Don't forget to get signet at the gate guards before going out and killing things. Among the benefits of signet is that you can accumulate points which you can use to buy special items from the gate guards.

One of these items is the Empress Band which costs 1000 points. Using this ring gives you a bonus of + 50% exp from each kill. The effect will wear after a total bonus of 1000 exp. You get 7 charges but don't throw it away after the last charge because you can trade it back to the gate guard and recharge it for 700 points.

You can use this ring every 16 hours. 1000 extra exp every 16 hours can be very useful especially at lower levels. Good luck and welcome to the game.

I knew there was a ring, wasn't sure how it was used. I have been using the signet so I am about a third of the way to getting the ring. So when I switch from BLM to WHM at level 18 I should head over to Bastok? Is it even reasonable to make that travel at level 18?

No one groups until at least level 10, though that has ben changing more and more, and many people solo until 15-20 because theres a lack of decent camps (and the level 10 option, The Dunes, has ruined many a good game day for almost everyone)

The check system works like so (with some errors because I can't rememebr)

For the early levels it checks your level against the mobs level.

Later on, it checks the mobs level to a party of 4 at your level

and then a lot later on, checks mob level against a party of 6 at your level.

Soooo, while easy prey and Decent challenge are killable to you now, they won't be so do-able later on, depending on job.

I feel liek the check system is the evil devil on FFXI's left shoulder telling you to go for it, it's just an Even Match.
