Hey, I knew I said I'd be taking the day off but it didn't work out that way so I ended up playing last night. Some random BLM invited me to party with him so the two of us set off to the Canyons... On the way we picked up a WHM and we were set to go. This was quite fun but in reality was still slower and more dangerous than soloing. Sometime later we picked up a Ranger/Monk to be our tank. That was quite enjoyable and I can't wait until I am in a situation where I really need a group! First time in the Canyon was interesting, got lost trying to get through the stupid mountains. At least there is nothing big and mean to destroy me in them.

I was disappointed with how poor my Bind spell worked on most of the Mobs in the canyon. They would be bound and unbound within 2-3 seconds of each other. Not to mention they would be pissed at me.

I tried to cut straight across East Saru (or was it west I can't remember) to get to the Canyon and I ran into the mountain that doesn't exist on the map and wasted a bunch of time because I then had to run around it. That was irritating.

The run to the Canyon wasn't too bad and I think I'll probably spend a good amount of time soloing just inside of that zone. I bet I can probably get to 15 soloing in the canyon. I think someone may have said that in a previous thread too.

Anyhow thats it for now, not sure if I'll be on tonight so you may not hear from me tomorrow. I suppose I should end with a question. Is there a more global map somewhere? A map that shows what zones are next to what zones and so on? That would be handy for trying to get to some of those outposts when the time comes.

Thanks,
Twadd (Altis on Carbuncle)

Twadd, I'm not sure if anyone mentioned this in one of your previous threads, but I'd keep an eye out for who's controlling Zulkheim during the current week. You'll want to do a Supply Quest to gain the Outpost there, so you can pay your nation's OP Warp NPC to get there quickly. It's too long of a trip for someone on foot and boat.

How I envy the fun you're having right now.

EDIT: DOH! You mentioned OPs at the end of your post. Damned Tabbed browsing! ><

Your conquest map is as good as it gets ingame. However, you can try www.ffxi-atlas.com for a good look at the world. On each zone's section, they label what connects to where, how to obtain the maps, etc.

Well, for maps the usual place people use is http://www.ffxi-atlas.com/ but that's down as I type this and has been the source of recent exploits that have lead to people having their accounts hijacked if other threads round here are correct, so only go there if you use Firefox+addons to block the ads that are being blamed.

As for your Bind not lasting long, this is a reflection of your Enfeebling magic skill being a bit low, the more you use each school of spells the higher your skill, which means mobs will resist less and when they stick they'll stick for longer.

Twadd, your Bind spell duration is tied into your enfeebling magic skill level. If it is very low then your binds will not last as long. You will level up enfeebling magic as you use the spells more and more.

http://www.ffxi-atlas.com is the best place to familiarise yourself with how each area is connected to the next.

Thanks for the information.. I wont be looking at that site for awhile as I don't plan on traveling that far any time soon.

Is there a formula to determing what level you should have each of your spell types at? I've been starting to use Poison and Bind quite a bit more in attempts to get that level up. I don't know what level it is at now. My Elemental is at level 22. My job level is 11. What is the max level on spell types? If I switch jobs from BLM to lets say Dark Knight, does my Elemental skill keep its level? Or does each job have it's own set of skill levels?

Thanks,
Twadd

http://ffxi.cannotlinkto/ has some excellent resources for that. Scroll down to the Skill limits link in the left sidebar and fool around with it.

Also, if no one's mentioned it, make sure you get MND and INT Rings for level 14. If you learn to macro swap these in for your spells, they will increase their effectiveness. Go to each of the WHM and BLM forums and read the stickies to learn what stats affect each kind of spell. I'm sorry I can't be more specific, but I can't remember these off the top of my head anymore. ^^

Yes.

In FFXI your CHARACTER has various skills which may or may not apply to any particular JOB or subjob you have at the time.

Thus, leveling Enfeebling on BLM means when you switch to DRK or RDM (or any other job which has that skill) your character's skill level applies, capped by the job level and skill rating for that job as the cannotlinkto info SFHcakan pointed you to.

The spells and abilities list, in the links on the left of this site is excellent for seeing which job gets which spells, at which level, and what type of magic they are.

From within FFXI you can go to your menu, then status, then magic skills to see what your skill levels currently are. If a number is in blue, its capped. Aim to get as many numbers in blue as possible.

You can actually get to 16 in Sarabaruta, speed killing really easy preys for 20 a pop. Exp doesn't completely go away in the Canyon until 22, solo. At as early as 19 you can start on the true solo BLM path.

http://ffxi.allakhazam.com/db/jobs.html?fjob=3;mid=11643140656968310;num=249;page=1

You will still have to get your WHM subjob leveled in a party though.

Welcome to XI Twadd :)

Enfeebling can be a bit of a chore to level, partly due to the number of spells you have at your disposal which can skill it up for you. Many Black Mage enfeeble spells use Elemental or Dark magic skills rathter than enfeebling.

This will get easier once you've got your subjob unlocked and leveled to 3. Then you'll have access to Dia, which (just like Bio) lands 100% of the time, meaning that you have a chance of a skillup every time you cast it.

Also (just like Bio again) Dia is cheap and has a fast cast time. The only thing to be wary of is that Bio will over-write Dia, and Dia will not over-write Bio. You might want to do a little research into how the two spells differ and when/where you should be using them ;)

I still use Dia to skillup my Enfeebling right now on my Black Mage (and, you guessed it, Bio for Dark skillups) and I'm in the 50s these days :) I'll carry on using them until I cap them fully @75.

Yeah, I think atleast for now it will be wise for me to avoid that site and not have to worry about getting something bad on my computer.

I think I will try to solo as high as I can as to not give any false impressions that I will be a long term groupy. As once I get to level 18 and unlock my subjob I plan on switching to WHM and leveling that up to 37 using BLM as my subjob.

Have there been any reports about the cannotlinkto site having any issues too? Or is it just the atlas?

Thanks,
Twadd

FFXIAH.com and FFXI atlas are currently being cited as potential sources of the latest accont hijackings, not the sites themselves, but the ad's they have in their banners. Sadly as they are not sponsored by their user base they cannot run and maintain the site without the revenue from these adverts :(

Well I do tend to have questions mixed in with my life story. I was really hoping to avoid a blog but if I am misusing this forum I suppose I should.

As a lvl 11 Blm. Your Elemental Magic skill should cap at 36, and Enfeebling at 33. Don't get too ban out of shape, because it is hard to cap those skills as a subless blm at your lvl. Blind, Poison, and Bind is your enfeebling friend at your lvl...just make sure you cast at less one of each per battle. It might cost a bit more mp, but it is also good to get the skill up while you are soloing.

ask questions, dont give us your life story.

Twadd,
You are using the this forumn exactly as intended (to ask general FFXI questions). If little tid bits of your life story (or FFXI story) get involved I actually find it more amusing to read, so please keep doing exactly what your doing.

Lots of us who have been playing forever find ourselves replaying lots our own FFXI discovery moments when reading your posts. It's nostalgic, and I like it.

Edit: Added the quote, since the post that inspired me to write this one was sub-defaulted and people may not see it and think I'm nuts or something.

Thanks for the input. I think I'll keep making my posts here. I think I will probably continue to have questions as I keep moving forward. Hopefully I wont repeat myself too many times, it's pretty easy to miss a post if I'm not careful.

Anyhow,
Thanks again!

then why do people go on rants about their personal experiances and their accomplishments over the weekend.

It is a general forum for a reason, anything that has to do with FFXI can go here.

If he starts simply saying what he did each day, and it stops being interesting, or helpful to him or the player base, then maybe I would agree a little, but even then people will just stop replying and it will go away.

Right now I believe these posts are not only helping him the player (as he is asking questions, and the stories do help us the veterns relate to exactly what could help him the most), but this info is being stated, and could help many more then just him. Also it is good entertainment for us others that have been high level for so long and miss experiancing everything for the first time.

Don't let certain forum ***** get you down. Frankly your posts are nostalgic for me and bring back some good memories of a time when everything in the game was new/scary/exciting good times!

I also find it good to have him post his events. Not only is he asking questions that I think are very pertinent to a new player, it helps others in being able to give suggestions to help him improve his skills.
There is no problem with that at all. I have a blog that no one visits, what good would it do Twadd to start a blog, ask questions and have no one visit to answer his questions.

With all the uproar over the problems at other sites, this is a bit of fresh air for me.

The connection chart on FFXIatlas can be a bit intimidating when you're starting out, and I found this image helpful - it's missing some of the newer areas but gives you a sense of walking distance on a single map:
