Be warned: MMORPG and Unhealthy AddictionsFollow

#1 Feb 28 2008 at 10:25 AM Rating: Excellent
Sometimes with the seriousness of life and the way MMORPGs can emerse you, it is often easy to forget what matters. I am writing this in hopes that it can help many of you make the right decisions.

Before FFXI came out I had never played an MMORPG. I spent most of my free time hanging out with friends and family, studying (in college) and playing sports. Life was pretty good. Or so I thought.

FFXI came out and I started playing more and more. The desire to be the best grabbed a hold of me and I found myself needing to be on more and more. I started making real progress.

But one day, I started thinking about my friends I haven't seen in a while. I thought about how my grades had dipped and I was feeling and looking less healthy from the lack of physical exercise. I know a lot of people have been here and face those tough decisions on how we choose to live our lives.

So please, listen to me. When you find yourself emeressed in this game, and suddenly called back to the real-world for things such as: spending time with your girlfriend/boyfriend, hanging out with buddies, exercising or working and/or studying please remember one important thing: None of these things give you any experience points. I know the temptations of the real world can be overwhelming, but stay the course. That uber piece of gear you want or that next level can be yours tonight, but you have to learn to prioritize and avoid the evil temptations of that 'log off' button.

Ha ha. This would have been a good Friday thread. Real life doesn't give you any experience points. I'm going to say that to all my in game friends when they say they need to go afk for whatever.

I just told my friends and girlfriend "If you want to hang out with me, you can start a FFXI account on Siren."

It worked for me, now with the addition of mog house guests they all come over and hang out with me.

My friend is getting married in June. At the wedding there will be 100 computer terminals set up, each with a free 7 day trial for FFXI so that all the guests can attend their Virtual FFXI Wedding in-game.

I don't see any problem with these things. Gotta go, I've spent too much time logged out, my LS is gonna think I had a tornado or some other natural disaster strike my house.

Hahah, nice! :)

Although, I will say, work gives you money so you won't starve to death and lets you pay various utility bills. Work = money = FFXI!

Exercise will keep you trim, keep the fat cells small, your cholesterol low, your heart unclogged, and will allow you to lift that new dual core mammoth of a machine when your old machine dies, thus allowing you to keep on playing FFXI.

If you're in college, well, study enough to not flunk out because with a college degree you can get a good job (or so they say) and keep paying for all the things that need to be paid to keep on playing FFXI.

If you have friends, they can sometimes be a drag... So yes, drag them into FFXI! If they're rather hesitant because they know they'll be addicted to it, the solution is simple enough. Sneak into their rooms where they keep their computer/PS2/Xbox360 and install the game for them! Who cares if you're breaking and entering! Your friends will thank you later.

If after all that real life still beckons you, c'est la vie.

I saw the thread title, and I thought, "How many of these threads are going to pop up?" And then I read the OP.

Nice parody thread.

Superb retaliation to some of the shit that has been on this forum the past few days.

FFXI is not addictive, it's your addictive personality that longs for an addiction. If it's not here, it will be somewhere else.

I agree. When I feel myself getting to absorbed in a game, I say. "Ok. You've played enough. Why not call ______________"? The sad thing is, not many people have the discipline to do that.

The only reason more ppl aren't addicted to the game is because they have to go to work/school/college etc. If you really have all day every day to play if you want to it is insanely difficult to discipline yourself and not play 16 hours a day.

It was either FFXI or crack, we had more WiFi hubs in my neighborhood than crack dealers...you do the math!

This is why parents need to ban together and demand more crack dealers in middle-class neighborhoods, so we can stop losing our children to Final Fantasy XI and World of Warcraft.

So you're saying I should stop killing kittens since I'm not really getting experience points?

Bunnies give way more exp at your level, you should then target worms (the gummy kind is acceptable) and then move on to the beach to kill crabs or go in a cave to kill more worms, then wait till winter to kill more crab and worms. Once Summer moves around kill all plants you see.

>.> I'm home all day every day, I can do whatever I want whenever I want as long as there's food on the table at 5 pm, and I couldn't even think about playing 16 hours @_@ 5 hours in one sitting is about my limit, although I tend to be on and off for total of 10 hours or so of the day. Lots of idling while doing other things though, or synthing/fishing while watching tv etc.

I do believe this falls into the category of "Too Much Information."

But the OP is the perfect example of a GOOD Friday thread.
