Hey all, Thayos here posting from Pikko's account. Here's a little writeup on "The Swarm," this year's special event for Fan Fest attendees. People here were given tickets redeemable for one round in The Swarm... so for people who know someone who came to FF, start kissing up if you want to try this out! Anyway...

----

The Swarm is an assault-type battlefield in which your party must kill as many monsters as possible within a 5-minute time limit. Monsters are given different point values according to their levels of difficulty. When the fight is over, your party’s score is tallied. The score of each individual party member is also displayed.

The Swarm is meant to be a fun, casual activity to be enjoyed with friends. There are no item rewards from this battlefield.

Fan Fest Swarm demo

The entrance to The Swarm battlefield used in the Fan Fest demo was at D-9 in Rolanberry Fields (s). People entered in parties of six, zoning into a large, open area that strongly resembled Gusgen Mines. Then the fight begins. A variety of mobs including bees, beetles, crawlers and goblins – even Adamantoises – drop from the ceiling into the middle of the battlefield. As soon as they hit the ground, then begin running toward the edges of the battlefield; if they reach the edge, they despawn. Monsters stop when they are attacked. These battles were incredibly fast-paced, and monsters didn’t appear to be difficult to kill. SE employees who were facilitating the demo recommended having most party members concentrate on killing Adamantoises as they popped while one or two party members continued killing weaker mobs. By mid-afternoon on Saturday, the points record for a party in The Swarm was 29,920.

Other Swarm Info

-The battlefield is called Ruhotz Silvermines.
-Monsters have different features.
-Adamantoise have high defense and are worth many points.
-Bombs are worth medium points but may self destruct.
-Slimes award average points but, when killed, provide a benefit to nearby players.
- Lycopodiums drop temporary items, but also have a special attack.
- Beetles have slow movement and award average points.
- Goblins award average points, but also drop bombs which are usable by players.
- Activate “fever mode!!” by killing pixies, which can move extremely fast.

Additional Rules:

-Buffs are removed after entering the battlefield.
-Protect and shell are cast upon players when entering.
-Enemies do not link, aren’t aggressive and are immune to sleep.
-The party leaders can use the item “Bottled Fey” to exit, but you can’t return to the battlefield after exiting.

Sounds excellent. I hope someday SE decide to release all the Fanfest fights to the FFXI public. I'd love to try out more battles in places like the Stellar Fulcrum!

Also, go go getting the high score!

So, Ruhotz Silvermines has been appropriated for Swarm, Ghoyu's Reverie has been appropriated for Moblin Maze Makers. I wonder if Everbloom Hollow will get any love?

Sounds like something that Career Blms (such as myself) would love to death. I second the releasing to the general public of FanFest events, of the past at least.

I'm sure that there are plenty of people that'd love to do the Serpent General one, and I'd personally like to fight Shantotto and Prishe sometime.

Considering how fast the mobs start moving after they drop down, and I never saw any indication as to whether they can be slept or not (most everyone was actually killing mobs to test out the Mythics), so it'd be hard to -ga enough to make it worth the effort as far as points.
