I played Final Fantasy XI probably 2 years ago now and got a BRD up to 56 with a handful of other classes under 30. I just recently "resurrected" my character, and much to my dismay all of his gear and gold were gone.

Since it's been so long since I've played I don't really remember where to level or what gear is good etc.

I'd love to get back into my BRD again asap, but I'm certain that if I were to join an xp party, I would get laughed all the way back to Bastok. So I guess my question is, how should I be utilizing my time now that I'm back?

Should I just play a level 1 class and forget about my BRD until I have a bunch of Gil and gear?

Should I get on my BRD and just keep trying to find groups that will take me?

Summary: How should I best spend my time so that I can play my BRD again as soon as possible?

Turn your flag on, though I don't condone it...you will get a party on bard regardless of what gear you have.

Go farm! When you have proper gear and some money, then you're allowed to party. I don't condone giving anyone a free ride. Especially as I put effort and thought into my gear when I level something. It's not a lot to expect other people to do the same.

I'm not asking if I should get piggy-backed.

I'm more asking what I should be doing so I can actually group again on my BRD and not feel like a mooch.

Like I said, I've been out of the game for a while so I don't even know where to start farming (not to mention I have zero gear so finding something I'm able to farm could prove difficult).

Another question would be: What kind of gear should I have before I won't feel guilty about grouping at 56? If someone could post some sort of short list of gear to shoot for I can at least have a goal when I log on.

You're 56. That means ToAU, and that means you're pulling.

For Remora:

Light Staff - 20k [Will aid in landing lullaby(sleep)]
Earth Staff - 20k [Will aid in landing elegy(slow)]
Cornette +1 - 5k [Minuet - Attack Song]
Royal Spearman's Horn - 4k [March - Haste Song]
Horn - 3k (Horn +1 - 10k) [Elegy - Slow Song]
(edit) Some CHR gear to help, in order of CHR:gil ratio.
Jester's Cape - 6k [CHR+7]
Corsette - 7k [CHR+5]
Pearl Ring - 3k [CHR+2] ~ 6k [CHR+4]
Bird Whistle - 6k [CHR+3](/edit)

Beehive Chips - 4k a stack (hill outside Port Bastok) Can farm with a Lv7 or higher char, recommend 15THF/--- or ---/15THF or higher.

Even if you really really suck at farming, get one stack an hour, that still will get you your keystone gear in a week. If you want my advice, though, go to Windurst. Get a job to like level 5 outside. Then go to Giddeus and kill Yagudo.

Wind Crystal (Dropped by the Yagudo) + Bead Necklace (Also from yagudo) = 3 Grass Thread. It's a low level synth, you can do it at 0. Sells for about 2k a stack. Will also get you CP to buy Conquest Items to sell, if any are worth it. Do a little research.

There are also bees in there. You can get earth crystals and make grass cloth if you want (Earth + 3 thread) if the cloth sells for more, but you need closer to 8 Clothcraft skill to do that. Bastok has always had the best beehive chips for me, but this will net you exp and gil.

You're not merit pulling so you won't necessarily need lullaby, the Lesser Colibri don't reflect spells, and you don't actually have to land Elegy 100%, just pull with it... and buffs don't need a lot of buffing past the instruments and your skills. For a bare minimum starting out bard, this should suffice until you can get into some BCNMs or something and accumulate more gil.

As a BRD, equipment is cheap up to 75.

You should have at least a Cornette/Traviersare/Horn +1 (HQ), and any march+2 instrument. All of those are cheap and shouldn't take more than a day to get. Fill the rest with relatively cheap CHR gear, with AF legs and hands.

CHR rings/neck piece/body/head won't cost you more than 100k altogether, and would last you to 65.

Do you have any seals left at all? BCs a good way to make some instant cash.

I'd say you could farm most of that on lower level mobs on your BRD if you have no other jobs, and it shouldn't take more than a few days to get the bare essentials to start partying.

Good luck!

Awesome, this is great advice, and thank you so much for the list of gear I should be trying to get.

I do have a 33 THF so I can try doing Beehive chips for a while. If I get bored of that I'll hop to Windurst and level up some lower level characters while killing Yagudo.

Although, embarrasingly, I don't remember what ToAU stands for although it sounds very familiar.

Also, I don't have any seals left, but I do have 17k conquest points or so. I'll take a look around to see which would get me the most profit if I sold some of that gear. If I recall, the auction houses between citys are not linked, correct? ie: if I post something in Bastok, people won't see it in Jueno, and consequently the prices might be different?

Am I the only one curious as to why one would have a character with zero gear/gil?

Even if you gave all your goodies to friends when you left, you should still have various R/EX gear and possibly even stacks of seals.

And even if you totally haven't played for 2 years, you should still remember the basic "rules" of "make money to get gear" and "wear appropriate gear for your job if you're going to party".

The basic gil-making procedures are pretty much the same: low-level farming (beehive chips, threads, desynth items), low-level consumable crafting (ingots and such will always be profitable), and HELM.

I can understand forgetting some of the maps, quests, and specific gears. But how do you forget basic things like that?

That's like saying you have a 56 BRD and don't know where to go to rent a chocobo at a crag or how to get to your mog house in Jeuno. [Insert Stan/Kyle voice from South Park saying "REALLY?!" in the 9/11 episode.]

He probably dropped everything to keep from coming back.

As this shows, that doesn't work.

I had a feeling someone would eventually assume that I bought a character or something.

I assure you this character is my own and I remember some, but not all things.

I realise that getting gear means farming, but I haven't played in so long I really don't remember what was best. I vaguely recall using my THF to farm some lizard in South Gustaberg for boots as well as a (Mosquito?) in Valkrum Dunes for something or other.

The reality is, it's all kind of hazy, and when you haven't done something for years it's really not all that unreasonable.

Actually, come to think about it, I quit FFXI before the release of the first expansion and definitely before I got to college. So that makes it more like 6 or more years ago.

Man does time fly or what.

And there's no way I would delete my stuff!

If you quit the game and cancel your account, eventually SE does a "character clear" or some such nonsense.

Once I heard that they instituted the character resurrection service, I decided to come back. Unfortunately, when they resurrect your old character you no longer have gear or gil.

I do, however, have all of my keys.

ToAU = Treasures of Aht Urghan

Jeuno - Whitegate are linked, and each main city (Windy, Sandy, Basty) are linked to a major outlands region (Rabao, Norg, Kazham), but those aren't as important. I suggest selling your Grass Threads / Cloths in Windurst, cause the Clothcraft Guild is there, and usually those materials sell higher than in Jueno.

I use this part of the FFXIAH site to look at all the Conquest:Gil ratio. I don't know what rank you are, but 17k will still get you at the least ~51,000 gil even with Rank 1 junk, provided it sells.

And also, new is Fields of Valor. You pick a page for a training regime, and once you complete the requirements (say, 8 birds, 3 crawlers), you get an automatic 200-300 bonus XP, 200-300 gil, and some tabs (think carnival tokens) that you can spend on buffs. Refresh for a low level BLM and just nuking your way through crabs would work wonders.

Uh, no, they don't.

Either someone got in on your character and dropped stuff, or you did it and don't remember. SE doesn't partially clear off your character.

Its not that they delete parts of your stuff or anything, its that if your were gone a really long long time they used to (they don't anymore) wind up overwriting the hard disk space that your characters files (theres more than 1 file) previously occupied. This is why some people would get told their character was not recoverable. Its unlikely and yet possible that inventory data was gone but the job level and skill data was still there.

I wasn't saying that as advice, it was more of a declaration to the sad state of affairs partying with pick up groups can get to.

My fault for the Sub-D rating, lol. I forgot to turn on /lolpickupgroups so as to not be taken seriously.
