This seems oddly relevant, yet I can't quite put my finger on why...

I should note that we already have a couple more ideas for strips, so if you want to take a crack at drawing one, send me a PM or email us.

I also want to note that you needn't be limited to my character designs (Kevin and Smeege). Feel free to come up with your own should you want to, though you're more than welcome to use mine as well.

Considering I know what kind of art and comic strips some people are capable of making ( <3 <3 FFXI Fan Art Contest), I think I like it.

That comic was cute. One question Pikko.... will you be adding more to this as time goes by...

+ think its a great idea to have one day of the week to show off how silly/creative one can be and to share it with others.

Pikko and I intend to put new comics out on a regular basis, but at the same time we're opening it up to the forum members to create their own or submit ideas to us for future installments.

It will depend on what people want to do. If you just have an idea but don't want to illustrate, you can just send us the idea for consideration.

If you want to illustrate, though, we'd need you to submit three separate panels that will scale down to 200x200 without losing too much detail. We'd also like people to use a consistent font. The one used in the first strip is called DigitalStrip and it's a free font available online.

The reason we want people to email us first is so that we can keep the content consistent and clean. If you can provide us with a sample of previous work, that would also help us determine whether you have the right style for a comic submission. We'll talk over an idea you have and discuss together how long it will take you to draw it and any other details that would go into it.

Can I just draw the strip within your technical specifications, and if you like it and it's acceptable, then it might get used? Seems like a lot of back and forth for something this simple.

My feelings aren't going to be hurt if you stick a 'Denied' on it for whatever reason. It can always go onto my website or in my portfolio.

Since my main concern is not getting people upset when they put work into it and we don't use it, then sure, you can do that! ^_^

I know I personally draw small, but 200x200 feels kinda limiting for anyone looking to go a step beyond stick figures while including text. Plus I'd probably just draw pervy strips since that tends to be how I do my random sigs on my LS' board.

Vlor drew his larger and submitted it to me in 400x400, which I then shrunk down to the size seen in the first strip. Is it really too small?

Yeah, 200x200 is really too small. I was trying to draw a strip last night and felt severely restricted. Being able to add enough words to properly flesh out a joke and make them large enough to see cut badly into available drawing space.

This is more of the size you want to shoot for if you're looking for high quality entries: http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2003/11/12/the-omega-hare/ (This particular strip contains some strong language, so it's not quite safe for work)

Note how vertical each panel is, as well. Rarely are they perfectly square because humans (which make up the majority of comic strips of this type) are themselves vertical, then having to add text on top and bottom squeezes them in even more.

Now that I think about it, I guess the sizing isn't all that important. The 200x200 came from us being asked not to go wider than 600 pixels on the front page, but we can always link to a larger image and the height isn't an issue really. Is three panels too restrictive as well? I had kind of thought that anything longer would be too much to ask.

Thank you for the feedback! It's really helping to flesh out the official submission guidelines page I'm writing up.

From my experience, 3 panels is almost always enough to get a decent joke out. Often times, if you go 4 5 or full-page with a joke, it really turns into multiple jokes that could have been split into a series, or just not nearly concise enough. Of course, in the same space as a 3-panel comic, some might feel inclined to just use one long panel, or two panels of varying sizes within the same template.

So yeah, 3 panels should be more than enough for now, though in the future, expansion might start to become preferred, since jokes can be as complex as their subject (FFXI being quite complex).

Three panels should typically be adequate, but I'd focus a restriction more on total file size than pixels or panels. Anything more than 1MB is probably too much for what I'd expect people to randomly submit. Far as the front page goes, you could easily ask for teaser thumbnails, too.
