The July 10th issue of Dengeki Playstation magazine has hit the shelves, and it contains a brand new interview with Hiromichi Tanaka and Kouichi Ogawa of the Final Fantasy XI development team.

Hiromichi Tanaka is the producer of Final Fantasy XI, which was the first MMO for the Final Fantasy series. He will continue his work at Square Enix as producer for the highly anticipated Final Fantasy XIV.

Kouichi Ogawa worked on the Treasures of Aht Urghan and Wings of the Goddess expansions for Final Fantasy XI. He also contributed to A Crystalline Prophecy, and will continue to develop the next two add-on scenarios: A Moogle Kupo d'Etat and A Shantotto Ascension.

The Dengeki Team was excited to get face-to-face time with these two who "hold the future of FFXI in their hands," and we are excited to bring you the juicy details!

nice work. Here is hoping that avatar is this update. Though I am a little that the Shantotto mini-expansion is not the next one oh well the Moogle Kupo d'Etat might be interesting.

Pretty good article. Thanks for sharing.

The part about ACP sales being phenomenal so them not caring about the poor reception has me worried severely about the quality of the next two mini-expansions.

Generally very positive all around though.

I wouldn't say they aren't worried. It seems like they realized it was a little lacking in content, and they have the intention of making A Moogle Kupo d'Etat a lot more fun. They've been asked about the fan reactions to this and other unfavorable content before, and I guess they just can't come out and say, "Everyone hated it." But I have hope they will keep our concerns in mind for the next one. :)

They are a business and are in need of a lot of money atm, if they can see and have now proven they can release sub-standard/cheap expansions and just add some nice drop to it to guarantee big sales you really expect something different with the next 2?

Anyone that complains about ACP but bought it knowing it was poor but wanted the item guaranteed the quality of the next expansions and probably killed any hopes of any full expansions in the future.

Glad I'm not the only one who felt awkward with that response.

Well I hope so because I sure won't be getting it in advance like I did with ACP. They've got a pretty bad expectation to defy first before convincing me.

After reading what they said about Moogle Kupo D'Etat, it does make sense to have it be a really wacky expansion and I'm looking forward to that one now. Moogles are always pretty hilarious, so I can't wait to see what they do with that when they dedicate a whole expansion to them. As for ACP, I still haven't even gotten my stupid seedspalls.

We have heard it several times so far: Final Fantasy XI has at least a year's worth of content planned in advance. Are there any plans after that? Well, Tanaka reassures us that he certainly does not expect to shut down FFXI in a year, and players can rest easy knowing service will continue as normal. The "one year" comment basically means they always have a year's buffer of plans and ideas, and this will not change even with the impending release of FFXIV. Tanaka realizes his previous statements could have implied that after a year there were no more plans for the development of FFXI, but wants all players to know that this is not the case.

I need to put this **** in a notepad file so I can copy and paste it in every single "OMG FFXI is Dying!" thread.

Actually, can we get an admin to filter replace the words "FFXI is dying/dieing" with the above paragraph? Is that doable? Please? :)

Thanks Elmer!

I'll be looking forward to the next Add-on to see what they come up with.
About the new Avatar.. why does "around the corner" sounds like "Happy New Year surprize Avatar!!" to me? >.>
I swear I hate being a Summoner sometimes.

I'm glad to hear they're thinking about the future of the game. FFXI can still offer a lot and seeing how dear it is to a lot of us, I'm happy to see there's still something to look forward to.

The talk of quests about WotG NPCs has me hoping they could somehow be tied into weaponskill acquisition.

There are really only two ways to make great missions.

1. Anyone can help on BC, even if they don't have the mission unlocked.
2. BC is optional and you can progress by skipping it.

I truly hate being stuck on mission BCs.

For anything that people disliked about ACP, this was the best part, and it's something I really really really hope SE continues.

For many missions, especially when you get later in CoP and ToAU, half the difficulty in doing the mission was finding 5 other people who had the expansions and were either on the same one as you or willing to repeat it.

For ACP:

1) They didn't need to be that far yet to help.
2) They didn't even need to have the expansion to help.
3) If they're repeating it, they get a bonus augment item, just for helping.

This is a great system, and while I won't say "I hope they apply it to the Zilart/Promathia/Treasures/Wings missions" because I know full well they won't, I at least hope they keep it up for the next two mini expansions and future full expansions.

To be fair, nobody knew that the content was going to be lacking until after the major bulk of the sales were already made and the wiki pages were up with information from people who finished it.

I still think that it's somewhat worth it because the armor reward is something that jobs that didn't have really terrific options to begin with (such as DRG) can get that is similar to what other DD's are wearing. It wasn't complete fail as far as the rewards for the time spent, which seems to be a pretty big ongoing complaint when it comes to this game.

You guys are reading to much into the comment about the sales. As a company they will not just come out and say yeah we made an error. In several interviews they have been asked/shown that we didnt care so much for ACP. From the looks of this interview they have gone back and probably tweaked it a bit to make it less of a chore.

If the gear is good enough you will buy it.

Getting back to the future, Tanaka indicates his hope for getting another Fan Festival off the ground this year. The idea is being discussed, and so far, he is optimistic. If worse comes to worst, Tanaka jokes, perhaps they will just meet both JP and NA players halfway and everyone will party in Hawaii.

Well that would make Pikko life alot easier when fan fest comes around!

Although I wonder if american and japanese players can play nice long enough for a fan fest. Why is it after the fact they sold out instantly last year the developers are worried about fan fest? It's not like they won't get their moneys worth.

I am very much looking forward to general esque quests for the version update after this. I love the general quests so much.

The congestion and fierce competition collecting items was somewhat expected, but Ogawa laughs at how fast players were able to clear the full scenario despite these obstacles. Tanaka says that as paid content, they wanted everyone to be able to successfully complete the add-on, but in retrospect, admits there could have been a little more meat to the challenges.

That's as close as your gonna get to an apology from any company trying to make money.

I for one dont think ill be purchasing the next add-ons. They just dont seem to be worth the time for the story they provide. I think a lot of people only got them for the ACP body pieces - which are only slight improvements to a few pieces of gear with other jobs having alternatives. The only exception to this might just be pet jobs.

Story needs to be better and the story needs to be longer. I was upset with ACP. Such a let down.

In DLC terms they're worth it

Too bad DLC usually fails at providing sufficient $/content ratio.

Tanaka reports that they were actually able to record sales that exceeded their expectations

Roughly half the people I know/talk to in game don't have ACP and have no plans at all to get it. What, were they expecting like 30% of the people to buy it or something?

For the love of God please implement this on all BC mission and quest fights. I've been stuck on some WoTG nation quest BC's forever without any hope of getting help on them. I really really want to be able to start on the new missions when they come out but its probably not going to happen.

Sometimes posts need to be popped. You'll reply, and then you'll see that you were the last one to reply on the topic list but when you click on the thread your reply is not there. What needs to be done is another post needs to be made (either in the same topic or in the same forum, I forget) for it to appear.

Isnt almost any gear slightly better improvements these days? That notion just makes me want to punch a baby. Seriously most any equip baring something crazy like Yagrush, are minor improvements over whatever gear we had before. The only jobs the ACP bodys didnt really help are RDM and BLM, but then again im sure there is some configuration of augments to make it at least some form of macro piece.

Also to many people got hyped up for some epic story line when the thing was 10 bucks. Normal expansions cost 30ish and are loaded with new zones/jobs/stuff. We were told they were meant to be small short episodic content. While I agree that the pacing for ACP was off, SE has long been known to misjudge the power of its players. Everything is either really hard or really easy, with things being really hard until their is a gimic found.

The moogle one should be a lot better due to the fact its with moogles. To many people get butt hurt/cry over one 10 dollar add-on, that wasnt the most amazingest thing since sliced bread.

I cannot wait for the Shantotto expansion! I think it makes sense to have the Moogle Kupo d'Etat come first because it sounds like it will be a light-hearted, extremely funny affair. Somehow I doubt that is how my favorite Taru is going to roll. If she is anything like she is in Dissidia, we are in for a real treat. I also imagine the final fight will be against Shantotto and it will be a SERIOUS fight Ohohoho!
