If you don't know already, I left FFXi back in Oct. I do not update this info anymore, although I'm sure a number of users post new info to the proper section's threads. If anyone out there has a journal or web hosting and would like to take over and maintain this info, please PM me.

No, not everything in this guide is accurate or up-to-date. Please post anything useful you know. Lastly, I have done my best to organize things consistantly and usefully. Please do your hardest to read a bit and search around for an answer before asking a question. No offense to anyone, but the same questions keep cropping up in these forum because people won't spend a few minutes looking for their answer. Some people just get tired of reading the same things over and over and over...

And now back to the previously scheduled fame guide.

In an attempt to make this information more manageable, I'm moving the meat of this thread into a number of smaller threads in my Journal. I've noticed that many people do not read very deeply into my thread and ask questions that have already been answered. Hopefully this will help make things easier for you guys to find the info you need. Please post any updates in the appropriate thread so that I can keep fame levels up to date. I will still check the main thread on occation, but I will pay more attention to the threads on my journal.

Alrighty, so I've gotten a little tired of the mass confusion between Rank and Fame, and all the misunderstanding about fame level requirements for the big quests (you know, Gobbiebag, RSE, Mog House, etc). The point of this thread will be to clear up this horrible fame thing. I will say now that I don't have all the answers, but I will try to keep this thread updated with new info. Anyone who has good information like what "level" fame you were when you got a quest, or exactly what the fame-teller in a certain town said to you, please post it.

Fame levels posted are the lowest I have found or that have been reported... who knows they might be lower. Tell me if you find one that's wrong!

This is a work in progress, please contribute (in the proper thread) and give corrections to make this info more useful!

First off:
Missions earn you Rank
Quests earn you Fame

How much fame you are given for quests varies, for one person it may take 8 bastok quests to earn Fame-2, another could be 11. Fame in Jeuno is (somehow) derived from fame in the other towns. Noone is exacly sure the direct relation, but doing a repeatable in Selbina will earn you fame in Sandy, Bastok, and Jeuno (and aparently Rabao, but I have not been there yet).

NEW Table of Contents:

I have this threed saved in my history, thank you so much for compiling these.

Will you keep updating the fame messages as you find them?

I know in Jeuno, I get the message that many people in the taverns have been saying my name, keep up the work... IIRC.

I think I have level 4 or 5, I can do the first gobbie quest.

Well its much appreciated but I think most ppl care more about Levels atm then quest since most quest require higher lvl's to complete. When i hit lvl 50 i'm going to try all the quest like the ones that increase my inventory and such but until I reach a point where i don't have to worry about dying from quest I really an not interested. I do lvl 1 quest as i get them tho.

Bonzai: Yes I intend to update these. Perhaps I wasn't clear on the info I'd like to get from ppl so here's an example...

I checked my Jeuno fame (NPC is in the list). He said:
"Hello, Tekkub! A good deal of people here in Jeuno know about you!
And they all say you're quite the do-gooder! Thank you for serving our fair city. Keep up the good work!"

Then, I go over to the gobbie shop and the lil guy offers me Gobbiebag #2. So from what I can tell that's level 5 fame, and the rew for GB#2 is Lvl5 fame in Jeuno

Pallier:
This is exactly the confusion I wish to remedy. I've only seen a small number of job-level restriced quests. Most all of the quest only have the req of FAME level. So a lvl1 mage could do most all the quests. The exceptions to this rule are the advanced job quests (lvl30 req), perhaps the race specific armors, artifact armor, the subjob quest, and the "Challenge the limit" job-cap quests. The rest is all fame level. I have gotten some quests in Jeuno while I'm in a lvl1 job on my way out to EXP-warp home....

You speak of dying on quests...might you be thinking of missions? I'd agree there, I've lvl30, rank 3 and don't wanna do another mission till I'm lvl 70! Truthfully I think I'll end up buying the 3-kindom airship pass before I "earn" it through missions.

The "level required" I was speaking of is not to recieve the quest itself its to be able to kill the monsters that drop the items needed for the quest. I'm not gonna spend money at the AH cause I need it for spell scrolls and aromr for my various jobs.
I understand that fame is an issue with some quest but i've done over 40+ different quest and the 4 of the reapeatable quest over 20 times each in Windhurst and the fame quest still aren't available to me in Windy so i quit trying the quest til the time I am so high of a lvl i can do any quest very easily. Hope that clears things up for ya. I have a tendensy to talk without explaining the meaning of what I say.

Okay i have almost complete data on Windy and Jeuno. Ill post it up in full (even with the small number of repeats) so that you can see the progression easier. Note: I rate my fame from 0 and I truncate the reply to a unique identifier to save space so i dont know the full thing they say.
Windy:

0 - <name>? Hmm.. Sorry, but I have never heard that name before.
~1 - I wonder if I have heard of your name before...
~2 - I have heard of your name before.
3 - Oh, you're the <name> that people are starting to talk about.
4 - Why, if it isn't <name>! I heard some guys talking about you over their dinners at the eatery last night.
5 - Hello there <name>! There aren't many Windurstians who don't know that name
6 - People would have to be living inside a hole to not know of you.
7 - There isnít a soul in Windurst who has yet to hear tales of your deeds.
8 - A day doesnít go by when I fail to hear a tale of your deeds, Lord <name>.

Unfortunately im from windurst so i pretty much got all the quests done before i knew about fame, so i cant place the quests against the fame levels.

Jeuno:

a few of yours are shifted up one level too high.

~0 - Unfortunately, I have never heard of your name before.
1 - <name>, eh? Hmm... That name is vaguely familiar...
2 - Oh, so you're <name>... Yes, I heard some travelers in a tavern talk about you
3 - Hello, <name>! I hear your name mentioned quite often these days. You've done well, my friend
4 - Hello, <name>! A good deal of people here in Jeuno know about you!
5 - Why its <name>! Your growing reputation precedes you.
6 - <name>. Literally everyone in Jeuno knows your name.
7 - Lord <name>! To all citizens here, your name is synonymous with courage and sacrifice.
8 - You have emerged as a hero to the people of Jeuno

Stiltz:
I'm working on a list of quests you can get at the low levels, if ya hadn't noticed. Just do those and some of the low repeatables till you get more fame :)

Barfy:
Thank you so much! I was missing Windy info...god I hate that place... I've seen many posts by you whilst trying to decern fame levels for quests. I do like you system (0-8) but have a few reasons for doing 1-9. First off, it's what everyone but you uses! Second, aside from the crafts, everything in this game starts at lvl 1. I felt that since fame is so similar to rank, it's best to use the same starting point.

Thanks for the quotes, even if they aren't complete they help. The quotes I pulled from that other forum were translated from JP so they don't match up exactly. Bit of a pain.

In other news, I've got lots of good info on many quests just from reading their threads. I'm thinking I might start sending in corrections so we can get this info in that "Estimated fame" field that always says "None"...

[Edit] i tyep gut!!

Re: Bastok Quest "Breaking Stones"

I only have fame level 2 and I had completed this quest, so I do not believe it is only for fame level 3, as I have been unsuccessful with getting my mog safe upgrade quest to unlock as of yet.

Thanks very much for this list, it is quite comprehensive! I hope it gets saved to the site here!

Here are the fame check NPC responses for Bastok Fame levels 8 and 9:

Level 8:
You must be Sykes. Don't look so surprised, as everyone knows your name and what you've done for Bastok.
Sykes, we're very proud to have someone like you as a Bastoker.

Level 9 (Hero fame):
Master Sykes! You are a hero to the people of Bastok! Everyone here knows your name and what you've done for us!
You are the example every Bastoker should follow!

... unfortunately, I only recently found this thread, so I don't have the other fame levels written down.

I can say from personal experience that is essentially impossible to die from the gobbiebag (increased inventory) quests (unless being broke makes you suicidally depressed or something ;) ). Personally, I found it was immensely useful to systematically increase fame in all cities once i hit about lvl 25 with my first job - at which point i could solo pretty much 75% or so of the quests per town (though it took time to hunt them all down), add to that repeatables as well as parties made to solve some of the unsoloable quests with good drops (aka Aspir) and I had hit middle-high levels of fame before i even got my advanced job. Just the 20 extra inventory slots alone from the gobbiebag was well more than worth the effort, as it helped my immesnsely when farming items for gil, as well as making me extreemly flexible when i go out to XP - i can wear all my EQ, hold teh next EQ upgrades for the next 4 xp levels, carry around a complete set of fisherman's and field gear in case my party breaks up in the field and I dont feel like heading back right away, and still have 15 free slots for holding drops which is more than somebody who hasnt started the quest is going to have even if they are only holding their equipment. My advice to you is that sometimes it behooves one to really research what things are truly possible when, as the benefits can really be great.

Oh yeah in order to stay a bit on the main topic too, here's what the Kazham NPC says to me:

Mister <name>! You are one cool cat!

I think its probably Level 7/8 fame since that is what I have for Windy and supposedly those are both the same, but i cant really be sure until i get a few more.

yeah its 7/8 on my scale. I figure i might as well stump my own scale by always reporting in it until everybody just adopts it ;). I dont want to just say "fame 7" cause that would be confusing, so i put the extra "out of eight" on to be clear that its mine. so #/8 where the # is from 0-8. so 7/8 = fame level 8 in "that other" scale. But i guess its also confusing since it looks like maybe im saying that the its fame level 7 or 8 and im not sure.

Oh its a side topic but i noticed that I still cant get the potter's clay quest in Mhuara to trigger (ive done most of the other quests there except the last two rycharde ones and the sand charm one - and i can get that one to trigger). Several guides say that Mhuara quests are based off of Windy fame, but as my Windy fame is 7/8 i kind of doubt this since the clay quest, though definitely an upper echelon quest, doesnt seem to me like it should require 8/8 fame, since stuff like the Teleport quests and the poisoned air in Beadeaux and such require like 4/8-5/8 fame seems like (and getting deep into gusgen to check a "???" doesnt seem realyl any togher than getting deep into Beadaux to check a "???". So my hypothesis is that Mhuara fame is maybe based off of another fame category (like selbina or Norg maybe?). Or its possible that its only the Potter quest that is special sort of liek how the Job for Consortium, Nihas' Amigo, and Zinc Ore quests are in towns but add Tenshodo fame. But unless that potter is like smuggling things into his clay i dont see any story related reasons why hed be a member of the Tenshodo ring. O its the case taht theres a prereq quest for the potter one. Anyways a little mystery there I could use peoples help on..

I thought Muhara worked the other way...like Selbina. Muhara fame adds to WIndy, but not the other way around. I don't know if that's really the case, as I try to avoid that side of the world as much as possible...but it would hold up to all the onther 'little town' fame workings.

Barfy, I get it now...I was reading that as "7 OR 8" my bad...will get that added in.

And I would think that the fact you have to explain the 0-8 system EVERY TIME you post about fame...maybe that a big red flag that you should stop being a nonconformist? :)

There's another message listed after the one you have at lvl 9 for Bastok, where Flaco invokes the blessing of Altana on you and says something along the lines of you being his personal hero.

I'll write it down and post it the next time I'm in Bastok.

LSA, that sound like level 9 fame to me. Will get that one updated.

So now another request for the people out there who are leveling up fame. When you give me a fame quote, would you mind listing off all the quests n that city you've gotten? It doesn't matter if you've finished them or not. I'm aiming to narrow down the levels for a lot of quests that I havn't found any info on yet.

I appreciate greatly every tidbit of info you've given me so far, keep it coming!
