Compare getting an Atma weapon to fully upgrading a relic in FFXI when the cap was 75 and they werent soloable then get back to me

Good point. Been there, tried that, didn't finish before I switched to XIV.

But that comparison isn't really quite valid. The atma hunt is more like getting 1500 heavy metal plates. And it's isn't a "this isn't as bad a grind as X", it's "how much of a grind is this", and the answer is that if your character's Luck stat Smiley: laugh is as bad as mine, the atma hunt is still a day-in day-out massive grind. Just because we're talking months instead of years doesn't make it not a grind.

Do remember that you can skip the atma entirely and now basically you can enter ST and get your unidentified allagan tomestone, cap soldiery for three weeks, and do about 33 or so A rank hunts over those 3 weeks and get a sands (or get a sands in your second week of ST) and congratulations, you just received a lvl 110 weapon =D

I manage one atma a day.... sooo 12 days max to get an atma weapon

Good for you. I was in Southern Thanalan from log on to log off with a break to help Illsaide with maps and to run our daily hunts/expert, and I got 0 atma for my efforts.

(Then during my daily hunt I ended up getting a duplicate atma of the scales. Smiley: glare )

Don't generalize your experience to others. I spent more than 12 days on East Shroud alone.

I really do get kind of irritated at people who say gathering atmas only takes a week or two and is no big deal. It really doesn't bother me that they got it so quickly -- it's not a competition and I don't think of it as one -- it's that they then belittle my efforts when I'm clearly taking much, much longer despite putting major effort into it. It is simply not the case that I've taken more than 12 days on just that one atma from lack of effort, and to imply that is a sideways personal attack.

But, I do have to agree with this:
DuoMaxwellxx wrote:

Well, I don't refuse to use anything else, but I too prefer building a long term relationship with a weapon and upgrading it (even if I'm continually behind) to spamming some event for the flavor-of-the-month weapon after every update. The latter is not an option I'm rejecting out of hand, especially since I think I can only practically sustain one relic upgrade at a time, but I do like that I'm "working on a relic". It's content I can really get into.

So I have until I get all the atmas to figure out whether I want WHM or MNK relic. I figure that based on my experience so far, the last three will take more than 12 days so there's no hurry. Smiley: lol

(And I missed out on FFXI relic. I'm pretty sure that has something to do with it emotionally.)

The UAT weapons are nice for people with multiple jobs... I could not see dong a relic for more than two different jobs even though I am sure that some do, but I dont have that kind of time. I am doing one job with Relic and the other a UAT weapon till its rellic gets caught up...

Yea thinking getting one atma a night for most people will not happen. It took me months to get mine done and I spent allot of time on it, Tes did got hers in weeks. She did it mostly with me and sometimes got 2 drops from the same area to my big fat zero... If you get one a night consider yourself lucky.

Sometimes they drop quick and sometimes they don't. I think the ones that took the longest for me were the first (Central Shroud) and last (Southern Thanalan). It's not an experience that I'm eager to repeat. Especially since the book obsession would happen again. Maybe if they ever change the myth cap from 2,000 to 20,000...

I'm glad I'm not the only one who likes to slip into something comfortable, put on some Barry White and slow dance with my relic in my FC private room.

In general, I think you'd get more bang for the buck in doing MNK over WHM, but go with what you enjoy the most. I enjoy PLD a lot more than I thought I would, so that's what I did.

I agree with you here Nash. I've managed over a year to get all jobs to ilvl 90, and working a full time job + wife + kid, I would be out of my mind to upgrade my relic for everything I have. I have the relic in all jobs, but getting atma for all of them? No way. Too much RNG for me. And with each Atma, Animus, Novus, Nexus, X, Y, Z step, it exponentially increases the amount of time I would need to spend to do so for each job. A UAT, sands, and 3 weeks of soldiery is really minimal effort in comparison, which is what I need for my purposes.

But I wanted to take part in the weapon progression process as well, so I picked one. I picked paladin way back when. I dont know why. I thought at one time I might main it, but I really only use it for quick queue times to cap weekly tomes. Now I'm workign toward Nexus, with maybe 175 / 2000 light. Smiley: glare I tank dungeons, I black mage primals, and I bard coils. Weird, I know. But my blm and bard, while higher level than the paladin, have UAT weapons. Fine by me.

Seconding the invite to Lamia. We're a bit smaller than the ZAM FC on Ultros, but as a result we are much more close knit.

We're close knit in our Ultros FC as well, but we only have 3-6 people online at once on average as of late. Probably until 2.4.

Again, thank you all for being welcoming. I googled server populations and I think I am going to go with the invitation to Lamia, as it appears to be among the most populated, and I like to be in the action :)

In FFXI I enjoyed being a Tarutaru so I will likely be a Lalafel male. Do the same principles of tanking from XI apply to XIV in any way? For example, Tarus made for nice PLDs for their magic proficiency, high mp count, and could spam cures, essentially being a tiny hate machine. Is this still true for this game or did SE rewrite all the book on races and stats?
I would like PLD to be my main focus, with high end game gear and relics but I also enjoy playing buffer, healer, DD on the side. My schedule will allow me to be in game most every day, but my main gaming and adventuring must be around 8 pm on, when the kids are winding down, out of my hair lol. During their peak hours I might be off and on crafting and doing daily routine mmo-lite activities, personal character chores and making gil.
Also, if anyone on Lamia reading this would like to, I would like to begin a static after I get sorted out. I plan on main tanking. If there is someone wanting to progress quickly as a WHM and would like to team up, I am very reliable and learn quickly. I do lots of online research and like to play things smart. Or on the flip side, if there is someone who wishes to PL their own tank, I can be your devoted White Mage healer buddy ;)

I just got the PS4 in mail today, got it all set up. My son is playing the new Trials game right now. Next week, after I get some more money, I will order a 2 month card, the Realm Reborn, another controller (white) Diablo 3 Ulitmate Evil Edition, a year PS plus subscription, and a copy of Last of Us Remastered. So, I think I have my gaming covered for a bit, and Christmas is not far off lol.
Ok, so I made the mistake of ordering a regular logitech usb keyboard, thinking it would work on my PS3 and 4, Roku 3, Wii U and it works for none of them. Do I need a special "Gaming" keyboard for ps4? Any of you recommend for me a good PS4 compatible gaming mouse and keyboard? I might switch back and forth between mouse and key, controller, and a Vita when I am not on the large screen. Thanks for the tips in advance. Cheers!

The racial differences in XIV are actually slighter than they were in XI, so you can be a great Lalafell tank or a great Lala BLM or a great Lala whatever-your-heart-desires. Smiley: grin

I don't know about the PS4 question. I use a Logitech wireless just fine on my PS3, though.

Thanks Catwho. I have decided on a top 3 for character names. I tried to choose something a little obscure to increase my chances at having desired name. They are all something with a nice back story to the name choices, found through a quick google search lol.
First choice: Herodotus
2: Sirius
3: Magu ( means Hemp Maiden)

I will look for a good logitech wireless gaming kb. Cheers!

You get first and last name in FFXIV so unless you choose something super common (there's a Jon Snow on every server) it's very unlikely that the exact name you want will be taken.

If you want a lore accurate Lala name, you could be Magu Magugu. Sirius I would avoid - it's the name of one of the later dungeons (Pharos Sirius.) Herodotus would be cool, but not lore accurate for a Lala.

My Lala character (not played very much) is Taprara Rara :)

I will probably go a little FFXI lore with the name: Herodotus Hemptaru

I like the real man, the "Father of History" Herodotus, an ancient world traveler, and Greek author, who told of the story of the elite 300 spartans, the Battle of Thermopylae.

I might not yet own FFXIV, but I am finding this live feed, game sharing feature on the PS4 very useful. Currently watching some higher levels battle a Malboro and fighting dungeons on Realm Reborn. This should help educate me a little before I leap into the game.

Btw, I did get the wired logitech keyboard to work on my PS4 which saves me some $$$.

Can any of the Lamia folk tell me how active your server is? It appears to have a nice population? Could anyone give me an idea of what to expect, a mix of low and high levels, mostly high level end-gamers, or somewhat still ripening as a community?
Are people on all hours of the day and night throughout the week? What are current peak play times?

Thanks all for helpin out an ole noob :)

Another thing I was curious about, the crafting has changed from XI to XIV how?
Can I max all crafts out, or do I focus on just one that caps at 100, rest at 60. I would like to look into gardening, cooking, and fishing. Is there something like a Lu Schuengs fishing rod quest where I must catch 10, 000 moat carp? Cheers!

FFXIV's crafting is so different from FFXI's that they're not even on the same planet.

In XIV crafts are their own classes complete with exp and levels and abilities and stuff. There's a sort of mini-game you play when crafting things and aspects like success and HQ rate are dependent on you level and gear and crafting "spells" more than random chance. You can, and pretty much have to get all crafts to 50 if you want to be a serious endgame crafter because you'll need skills from the other classes to do some of the harder synths.

One thing is crafting is fun in this game, Other than fishing I was not a fan of crafting in FFXI...

You can max them all out. It is actually best to level most of them to a certain point at least because they have cross abilities.

Making money crafting kind of stinks compared to FFXI... Where I did cooking in FFXI there were always those spots you could not wait to get to to make money.. You could not wait to get to insect balls then yag drinks then meat mithkabobs then sushi etc.

Level crafting is easier and less random than FFXI.. Crsfting was done very well in this game, I hated how random leveling was in FFXI..

I like crafting in this game, I just wish they made it a little more economical as you leveled...
