Anyone playing it? I REALLY loved the demo, really thinking about getting it ($20 price tag helps), but want to hear what some other people think, especially beyond the demo. Demo is available on steam, if people were unaware. http://www.torchlightgame.com/ for more info. Game is made by the original designers of Diablo 1 and 2...though they also designed Hellgate...
Really interested in it, just don't want to get excited if it ends up as lame as hellgate once you're playing past where the demo ends...

I bought it last night after reading Tycho's opinion of it.
It's **REALLY** good. It has that new, but familiar and nostalgic feel. One would hope that Diablo 3 would be as good, if not better than this.
Runic Games is doing the Lord's work, in an robust and unambiguous fashion.
Torchlight has the bracing qualities we associate with pure mountain streams. Let's run with that, actually; elemental is the keyword here, and not just because many weapons bear enchantments which confer elemental effects. I'd have said that an action RPG without multiplayer in the year two-thousand and nine was a fever dream before playing Torchlight; with the product in hand, I wonder if other people wouldn't just get in my way. As a design consideration, it was almost certainly the result of the eleven month development cycle - and multiplayer will obviously be core to the MMO that Torchlight becomes. But there's something so clean, so unfettered about braving these dark places alone than I think there's a case for it. Even in two-thousand and nine.
In this sort of game, one is constantly bedeviled by the strictures of your inventory space. Some games rely on a one item/one square nomenclature, while others manage equipment via what is sometimes called "lootris," where the shape of the item is taken into account in your pack. Dungeon Siege allowed players to employ a friendly burro to lighten your load, and let players (inefficiently) transmute items into gold, but I must say that I like the cut of Torchlight's particular jib.
Games sometimes offer among its menu of character choices a "pet class," but all characters in Torchlight have pets. The difference here (well, one of the differences) is that these pets can wear rings and an amulet, in addition to slotting two spells, so even though you have your choice between "dog" and "cat" it doesn't accurately describe the breadth of customization. Also, when pets eat fish, they, uh... turn into other animals. So, yeah.
But that isn't the portion of the jib I was referring to. Your pet has a tiny pack, which serves as an auxiliary storage space. What's more, right there in the upper left, there's a gloden button - gold, because it sends your pet back to the surface to sell the contents of this pack automatically. It then returns to you, its haunches straining with coin. This is YES. Unequivocally, indubitably super yes. While he's gone you forego his benefits, so there is a price to pay. Along with whatever mysterious fees he skims off the top, of course. Expect to see dog couriers next in line for comprehensive regulation.
(CW)TB out.

Based on the review on Penny Arcade (reprinted above), it sounds almost identical to a dungeon-crawler I played a long time ago. It was fun, but got real old, real fast. I'll check out the demo, but if it's not much different, the $20 would be about $10 too much for me.

i am thoroughly enjoying it so far. started a destroyer on normal and found it a little too easy. it looks like the side quest and the bonus dungeons scale to your level but the main quest does not, so after a little diversion my 14 destro was at the same point as my 7 vanq. i restarted a destro on very hard but the loading times on my craptop are a little excessive and i was loathing the anticipated return trips to town so i backed off to hard... back up to level 9 or so and it's pretty rare that i need to pop a health pot.
the shared inventory is nice, it's easy to feed a couple key items to baby toons. all three classes have talents that reduce the level requirements on weapons or armor. i read a review that said the loot was a little too good and came a little too often but turning up the difficulty tones it down. my 14 destro on normal was using a level 5 weapon that i'd dumped about 8000g in enchants into to keep it up to snuff; i passed that one on to my new guy on hard :)
looking forward to getting a little deeper into the game and the mmo sounds promising.
the idle thumbs podcast interviewed the shaeffer bros behind the game last week... i think they mentioned that tim of brutal legend fame is a third brother.

I wonder if we're thinking of the same game. The pet stuff sounds really familiar.

Haha I bought the game last night... The term 'diablo clone' has never been more fitting. Not that its a bad thing, the game is very fun. Im only level 8 and I really hope there is some decent gamelength to this game. Im playing and hard and have managed to decimate everything in my path with a destroyer, id expect some difficulty ramp up eventually... ???

What mode are you playing it on?
Some people have said it's too difficult, others say it's too easy. Normal seems to be a good pace for me and my Vanquisher.

playing on Hard. I figured very hard would be geared for Koreans or something.

Torchlight is awesome. The gameplay is perfect for what it is. A simple hack 'n slash dungeon crawler. I love the armour sets, too.
The quests are fun.
It's like Team Fortress and Diablo mated to produce Torchlight as their offspring.

It's good! The only problems I really have with the game are these:
1.) The game seems a little easy even on the normal setting. Most mobs die in one hit until later floors.
2.) Limited skills and some aren't really useful.
3.) I got stuck and had to console command my way out.
4.) Quests are a bit repetitive.
5.) No multiplayer *sob*
Other than these factors the game is great. It's like almost a mix between WoW's cartoon graphics and Diablo game mechanics. The gear drops are epic and the difficulty really starts picking up in later floors. The end boss is insane. And the main female voice actress also did Unreal Tournament 2003, I believe. Her voice is so sexy.
