The Great Big E3 ThreadFollow

Just under twelve hours now until the first big conference of E3 (Microsoft).

Here's a link to countdowns to the conferences, complete with live stream links.

Microsoft goes first, followed by EA and Ubisoft, then Sony. Nintendo goes the next morning. The schedule is thus:

Quote:
9:30AM PT, June 10: Microsoft
1PM PT, June 10: EA
3PM PT, June 10: Ubisoft
6PM PT, June 10: Sony
7AM PT, June 11: Nintendo

Here is leaked info mostly about Microsoft's presentation, with a spattering of PS4:

Quote:
1. Confirmed Microsoft is actively attempting to get developers to not mention PS4 versions. If they don't say "OUR GAME IS EXCLUSIVE FOR XBONE" expect a PS4 version. #truthfact

2. More DRM messaging at Gamescom. There is no rental strategy. Try to sweep it under the rug and hope people don't remember.

3. Cloud power was designed as DRM. Period. DRM was Microsoft's idea. EA and Ubisoft are supporters, Activision slightly less so.

4. DRM plans are actually worse than what they've stated.

5. Mirror's Edge 2 at MS conference.

6. Prince of Persia (reboot?) at MS conference.

7. Secret Phil Spencer game = World of Tanks

8. Live paywall still there.

9. Dead Rising 3, and exclusive DLC for another Capcom game at MS conference.

10. No online paywall for PS4. Unconfirmed.

11. No DRM info for PS4.

Here is the source.

This poster is extremely reliable, if he says it, it's usually true.

Bean made that early release trailer thread, but at least the big conferences and stuff I felt should get their own thread. I have class in the morning, but I'll be updating as I can.

Predictions, Xbone messes up more, Nintendo still has nothing to show, Sony runs away with all the glory.

I'm not convinced Microsoft is the one behind the DRM. They have the most to lose and the least to gain from a heavy handed DRM scheme. And if Sony doesn't follow suit with a similar/identical DRM scheme, Microsoft would be killing their own console before it ever hit the shelves.

My money's on this happening too. The internet seems determined to hate the Xbox One and I've seen people claiming to want to buy a PS4 and Wii U simply out of spite for Microsoft. If their DRM is really worse than what we've seen so far, I don't think they will do very well.

Nintendo still looks like they aren't even playing the same game as Sony and Microsoft. Other than new entries in their staple series for the Wii U (I predict Zelda, maybe a new Super Smash Bros, and very distantly possible is a new Metroid), I don't see anything big coming from their court.

All Sony really has to do is show off some solid launch titles and give some info on a light DRM (if any), and they win E3. Bonus points for free online.

/nod, Completely agree. Its not that I want to hate the Xbone (Which I fine a funny nick name Xbone could be Cross bones which is a sign of pirates which this system completely destroys) If MS did something worth wowing me but honestly their system looks like a souped up 360 with a Bluray player and a ton of DRM. At this moment Microsoft has the most to make up , Nintendo has to just do something worth mentioning other than lousy sales, and PS4 just needt to look pretty + decent price + Light DRM like you said.

Am I the only one who is reading this as "X-Bone" and then sitting there, stunned, that this name made it all the way?

And yeah, Microsoft is really ******** themselves, hard.

That's a perspective that, imo, isn't really taking the corporate culture into account at all. This isn't Microsoft's first forays into DRM for their own products - they're like any other major corporation looking to better the bottom line.

Gamers tend to see the logical path, where you earn gamer loyalty by trusting them, and sell products that way. But that's a really, really hard sell to a corporate executive who doesn't even play games. And with gamers historically not taking hard stances against games with harsh DRM, at worst it keeps their sales even, and at best it increases them.

From Microsoft's perspective, the way to win the console war is to have the most exclusive titles for their system. If one way they do that is to offer publishers a way to ensure zero used games piracy on their investment, they're going to. It's one of their tactics to get people choosing them over cross-platform releases (which already have a more limited audience, so you need to cover a wider swath of the group to make the same kind of cash).

It's also worth pointing out that Microsoft IS a game publisher. They announced they had a big franchise in the works last year, and are promising 15 XBox One titles (8 original franchsises) this year, which will theoretically make them the primary publisher for the system for quite some time. And it seems like they want to grow that studio, by restricting self-publishing for indie games and requiring them to go through a studio.

No more MS points any more. Officially switching to real money, instead of Monopoly cash

It's not enough to please me, but I am happy that M$ is starting to treat gold customers better (free games, no more points).

For those of us just waking up, what is the price etc? I see new KI and that makes me sad its going to bomb because no one will by an Xbone. KI was a genuinely fun game. Also Treating gold better while treating silver poorly still isnt all that much better. "Hey were finally going to give you alil something back for paying us and watching all those ads.

Did no one, at any stage of development, see the title "X-Box One," and not figure out XBone would be the go-to name everyone in the world was going to go to? Not a single hardware neckbeard beta tester looked at it?

Lol why would it be an Xbone exclusive? No metal gear title has ever been. In fact they've all been PS exclusives up until recently.

Ok Well i went over the talking points on Forbes website. MS did good focusing 100% on games, but they still havent discussed exactly WHAT this resale drm thing is, and this always online issue. If they want college kids to buy this they need to drop that, think about it College kids move 2 times year and might go with out net for a week while they wait to be installed.

I'm stoked but bummed by KI, Its weird seeing MGS V, Insomniac on Xbox.

The Price is going to kill them though, with all the bs of always online etc,. Predictions put the PS4 at 400-450 if it is PS4 has a HUGE lead, as long as they also have a light non intrusive DRM system. Otherwise MS did decent with everything overall. Lets see what Sony does.

Microsoft really needed to allay the fears about the features of their device that aren't palatable though. And they didn't. Showing games is obviously important (something they should have remembered for the reveal), but after the PR ********* they created, and their inability to address it at all, they needed to do serious damage control.

And with a $500 price tag, they needed it badly. I didn't expect the price to be nearly so high, particularly not after the PS3 launch.

What I imagine can hurt them in the European markets is that plenty of the major talking points about the non-gaming capabilities of the box aren't even going to be available for EU players, due to their various streaming/television laws. So they have to pay way, way more (500 Euro being about $660), and not even get all the goodies.

The thing that kills me is the ridiculous ineptitude. E3 was the venue they should have been seriously plugging their new features at, because it's not gaming specific. The console reveal needed to impress its current audience WAY more. Why the hell would you put all the gaming focus on E3, none on the reveal, and ensure reduced reach overall for your content?

It should have been at least 50/50 at the reveal, so they wouldn't have HAD to use so much time for games at the expo.

Agreed although the $500 pricetag is reasonable to me. That's what PS3, Xbox 360 launched at. I was honestly thinking that this gen the prices were going to go up yet again....to like $750 or something crazy. The fact that they managed to keep it around the same launch price as last time is a good thing.

Well 2 of those points are Sony only and 5 more weren't even mentioned...

So of the 4 that were covered, he got 2 of them right.
