You know, the usual announcement of an announcement. However, the wait is relatively short this time.

Today Valve posted this page, complete with a countdown to Monday and the following quote:

Quote:
Last year, we shipped a software feature called Big Picture, a user-interface tailored for televisions and gamepads.
This year we’ve been working on even more ways to connect the dots for customers who want Steam in the living-room.
Soon, we’ll be adding you to our design process, so that you can help us shape the future of Steam.

There is an image of a controller with the cord leading into the darkness.

This just might be a Steambox announcement. Stay tuned come Monday.

A steambox would be kind of nice. I mean, not something I'd like to spend a ton of money on, but if it is in the realm of 100-200 I'd totally consider it for the sake of flexibility.

I have a ton of Steam games I have bought just because they were like 75 to 90% off that I do not play. The biggest thing I find myself saying "If this was on a console id probably love it." I know I can buy a good controller for my PC but I still don't always want to sit in front of a small screen to play a game. If its under $200 I could see myself buying one for sure.

Problem solved.

Meh still have to drag a PC into my living room set a keyboard/mouse up with it. Much easier if there was a small box that would just boot straight into my steam games. Plus Id need a wireless gamepad which I don't have. The only gamepad I have has like a 4 foot cable on it.

my TV is smaller than my monitor so that isn't much of a factor but the TV is also a lot more moveable. So if I wanted to play some steam games in bed, for example, it would be ace.

Seems to be a thing called "Linux" if I'm reading it correctly. Finally something to do with the Linux copies of all those Humble Indie Bundle games, I suppose.

It sounds promising if it's optimized enough, you could toss it on a budget build rig for the living room. Of course the Linux thing is the real problem... Will developers really bother to make a 4th-5th version of AAA games just for Steam?

Maybe.

Supposedly (per an article elsewhere) SteamOS will support streaming from your Win7/Win8 system through your SteamOS box. I assume it'd work sort of like Splashtop for mobile devices. Sounds like a bit of hassle to go through but then treating my PC like a game console in the family room has never been a great desire of mine. If someone else wants to do it, at least it affords some option beyond "Play Linux games".

Steam Shame Nanny.

Upon detecting a backlog of over 100 uninstalled/unplayed games, Steam no longer lets you activate product keys.

Pretty bold guess there to say "Steambox" for Steam's great big announcement following announcing a SteamOS Smiley: laugh

Oh I know, the Steambox was the world's worst kept secret. "Calling it" this case was akin to predicting rain when it's overcast and thundering.

That said, this seems interesting. The question is how much of an advantage this machine will give over a traditional desktop. If this is something lightweight, optimized for games, and streamlined to the point of being able to play games almost out of the box (similarly to consoles) then I could see it having a pretty big impact.

I'm not totally against the idea, but I'm not sure who the target consumer is.

If it's console-price affordable then its not going to be powerful enough to run games at 1080p 60fps with high settings.

If it's cheaper than console and depends on the streaming from your gaming rig I have to wonder just how much latency there would be (remember Onlive promised unnoticable latency...lmao). If the latency is ultra low, like <5ms round trip, then I can see this scenario having a lot of success.

If it's priced like a tower than can play all current games on max settings (~$800) then it will just be too much money for a lot of people.

It's also possible all of these will be available, but if I'm going to spend any amount of money towards a better PC gaming experience I will be putting that money into my windows OS gaming tower.

I dunno it would be nice for me regardless. I don't care about max settings cause I have a tiny crappy LCD TV anyway... but I know I am an aberration in that regard. Obviously streaming needs to be optimized for it to be attractive.

Also, this convo makes me wish I was at home playing faster than light.
