Daaaaamn, I've been trying to get a Charmander, but everyone only wants Squirtles for them, and I haven't bred them yet. Smiley: lol

To be fair, I think a big part of it is probably that I'm trying to get a female Charmander...

Have you tried just putting another starter on the trade network and asking for a female Charmander? I got a bunch of stuff for Froakies by doing that. Smiley: lol

I think I had a Froakie on there for a week, seeking one.

Maybe I should try again? It's possible that just glitched and wasn't showing up or something? I was fairly surprised, to be honest. Particularly because it was early enough Froakies should have been in heavy demand.

I have a bunch of male Charmanders. I don't think I still have my female Squirtle. If I get a female Charmander, I'll let you know.

Could also be due to people not having Forakie in their pokedex. I don't have him because I took the Fox, so can't seem him on the search list, but can see the Chespin cause we had a fight.

People were kind enough to point out that you can search by name, if you go all the way down that list.

An NPC in game tells you in the town with the second gym, iirc.

The quick and dirty of it is that the mother determines the pokemon species, and the father can contribute moves (which is how you can breed a pokemon with moves it wouldn't otherwise learn).

All pokemon belong to one or more egg group, and they can breed with any pokemon in this egg group.

The exception is the pokemon that belong to the undiscovered egg group (like most legendaries). They can't breed at all.

Ditto can breed with any non-iundiscovered pokemon, but you can't breed ditto and ditto.

When you breed with ditto, it's always the species of the other pokemon.

To get pokemon to breed, you leave them at the day care. Based on their compatibility, there's a set chance of them producing an egg every 250 steps you take (every "node" you move).

Ok cool. So lets assume:

I have a dude Beedrill who knows Bug Bite, and a Female Butterfree.
I leave them at the bang shack and might get an Egg that should be a Caterpie who might know Bug Bite.

Alternatively I have a dude Charizard with Dragon Rage, and a Ditto
I leave them at the bang shack and might get an Egg that should be a Charmander who might know Dragon Rage.

Right?

(also how do I locate Egg Groups is it in the Pokedex?)

Egg Groups will be found on a player-made wiki (bulbapedia).

And yeah, I believe that would be how it works. I honestly don't know how it would go for parents who have the same base move set as the children (like, if I have a Fennekin with Flame Charge - might the child start with Flame Charge?)

But it's super useful in transferring the best skills across egg groups, though that's not always possible. Like, your Squirtle might not be able to learn Earthquake, because there might not be a possible cross-egg-group breeding pathway for that.

Ahh so I can take something who is fairy and water, and breed it with a Pikachu who is fairy, and maybe end up with Bubblebeam on a Pikachu?

It's not ANY move, unfortunately. It still has to be feasible for the pokemon to actually use that move. So, for example, Pikachu can learn Lucky Chant (a normal move from Flabebe), but it probably can't learn something like bubble.

Unfortunately, because the game is new, the breeding charts don't really have updated info for XY. I imagine the old things still function, but there are new pathways and move paths that exist now that didn't last generation.

If both parents are of the species being bred and they both know Flame Charge, it will be passed to the egg. Otherwise it will not pass along unless it is specifically an egg move. (at least as of generation 5)

Earthquake is a TM (in most/every generation so far anyway) so if squirtle could learn it - TM is the easiest way to get it. As of generation 5 all TM moves can also be transmitted to eggs.

Apparently females now have a small chance of passing egg moves they know to their children now. This adds a LOT of possibilities of move combos that were illegal before (cause were impossible to get all the moves on the father).

This is why I'm gay (among other reasons)... breeding is too confusing.

Breeding is easy. It's the eighteen to twenty years after that are confusing.

Breeding is easy. I popped a couple Eevees into the **** pad, and ended up with a dozen or so eggs. Started firing them on Wonder trade...not very much wonder came my way but w/e I have 8 Eevees left for evolution purposes.
