X-Wing, Tie Fighter Are FINALLY Getting Digital Re-Releases

Jeez, it only took decades, but two of the finest space combat games - not to mention best Star Wars games - of all time are about to get a re-release.

Special downloadable versions of both X-Wing and Tie Fighter will soon be released on Good Old Games. They'll be $10 each.

For that price you're getting not just the special editions of the games (which had slightly higher resolutions and improved sound, as well all of both games' expansions), but more importantly they'll be editions of the games that will run on a modern PC without needed to tinker.

The Special Edition offered here, includes Star Warsâ„¢: TIE Fighter and Star Warsâ„¢: TIE Fighter - Defender of the Empire, both in the 1994 and 1998 versions! 1

The Special Edition offered here, includes Star Wars: X-Wing Collector's CD-ROM and both Tour of Duty expansions: Imperial Pursuit and B-Wing.

It's crazy that it's taken this long. These games were two of the giants of PC gaming in the 1990s, and from the mission design to the combat still hold up very well today. If you've never played either of them, but keep hearing people like me blabbing on about how ******* fantastic they were/are, this is going to be $10 well spent.

Note that the announcement of both games comes via a GoG forum notice, which spilled the beans a little early. Similar postings reveal other classic Lucasarts games will also be coming to GoG, such as Fate of Atlantis, KOTOR and Sam & Max (though of course they're exciting, since they've long been available on services like Steam).2

Given the timing of the posting, it looks like both X-Wing and Tie Fighter will be available as early as tomorrow.

My nostalgia just hit a high water mark. It's probably a good thing I don't have 20 bucks right now (or a joystick...).

I also notice these are the ones before they made it harder to dodge capital ship fire. Ever wanted to take down a Star Destroyer all by yourself in a little X-wing? Now's your chance! Smiley: nod

You can use a standard controller with the games. Just confirmed that my 360 controller is compatible, but I still need to remap keys.

Here's hoping that Maniac Mansion is released as well.

Oh, wow... instant, uncontrollable nostalgia.

Back when I was a kid, I loved watching people play video games. Wasn't much of a gamer myself, but I loved watching. Once a week, I got to stay up late and watch my dad play some video games. X-Wing was one of those games. Memories are so vivid right now, it's unbelievable.

Good find!

I never did like those games. I remember buying one of them and couldn't get past the 2nd or 3rd mission. I was more into the Wing Commander games. I know I wasn't the best gamer out there but I was able to beat every mission on Wing Commander and Wing Commander II (including the X-pacs) but couldn't play Tie Fighter.

Maybe the memory is a bit foggy, but weren't the first few missions on TIE Fighter a pain in the butt anyway?

I mean the TIE Fighter itself could only take like 2 shots, so if you saw the indicator light up you had to slam the joystick quickly to the side or you were pretty much toast. The Interceptor was a step up but only could take 3-4 hits itself. The bomber was a bit more bulky at least, but none of them had shields, which made things awful. You could get hit, lose some valuable gauge or something, and pretty much be screwed for the rest of the fight.

Wasn't until, what, like 6-7 missions in you actually got a craft with shields? The learning curve on that thing was like running smack into a brick wall. X-Wing was a lot more forgiving at the start, IIRC.
