Ok, so there is no Reyn.

Picked up Xenoblade Chronicles X today, I have played it for about an hour and a half. I haven't actually played the story that long though. I spent a lot of time exploring the starting area and killing stuff for items and gear. Much like the first game, gear drops are pretty randomized and killing enemies feels much like a MMO styled loot system. I even got a rare piece of arm equipment (and achievement for getting my first "Gold" drop) from a level 4 monster whose foot was about as big as myself.

The texture for grass and other vegetation do tend to pop in, but the HD graphics are much better than the first game.

Battle system is very similar, but so far I have not progressed much to have the game explain things to me. So far I've just upgraded skills (similar to the first game) from the default classes. But the skills are very similar. There appears to be timed button presses to trigger your teammates to do certain skills that combo with yours. Your teammates will also cue you to use certain skills after they start a combo or do something that would make it beneficial. And the skills will "pulse" on your skill bar letting you know which ones would be best to use at that time.

The opening scene was pretty good (though, you've already seen it if you watched the announcement trailers.

I've been looking at this one, how do you like the exploration aspect of this game?

I haven't explored too much yet. I spent a bit of time killing things and gathering collectibles (yes, those make a return in this game).

The world I passed thru heading toward the main city from the starting point looked very large though.

It gives you a couple options on that route. You could either take the high ground, cliffs that went around and toward the city. This had level 1-4 creatures, with a couple big non aggressive level 4-6 creatures (which the two I killed had good loot). Big enemies have multiple targets. Head, legs, etc. Or you could jump off the cliff onto the bottom path. It warns you that this is a dangerous route filled with high level "Indigens" (What they people call the Indigenous creatures). I took the high road. But I explored a bit of the branching path that the other road lead to at the end. The creatures seemed to be from level 6-8.

I also climbed up a couple rocks on the edge to kill some creatures and noticed some level 8+ creatures in the distance. And also a few level 20+ creatures. There seemed to be some level 20+ flying creatures circling around above my head the whole time. I imagine these will become prey later on once I get access to a "Skell" (Mech)

Looking out from one of the high points in the main city over the area I had just walked through, it looks huge. Whether or not it's all reachable though is another thing, I would guess.

Loot system is automatically picked up after battle. In the first one you had to go to the drop from the monster and then decide what you wanted to keep after killing it. In this one once you kill everything and are no longer in battle a pop up appears that shows all enemies that dropped things, and you select them and which items out of their drops you want to take. Also has the "Take All" option.

Loot is pretty random. My first kill was a Level 1 bug of some sort. It dropped an Assault Rifle and some random garbage. One of the NPCs mention this in passing later, something along the lines of "I was fighting an Indigen and a weapon popped out of it's belly."

Oh, and I can't wait to be high enough to kill me some huge Brachiosaurus type Indigens that are all over the place.

I never played Xenoblade, but how does this compare to Xenosaga? I haven't been a fan of hardcore Japanese RPGs in recent years so I'm not sure if I'll like it.

It is not turn based. It's an Action RPG, with crafting and gear improvements. Battles take place in real time on the field. You have a skill bar and use your skills by selecting them from it. Key combos involve Staggering the opponent, disorienting them. Once Staggered, they are susceptible to skills that can Topple. Toppled enemies fall down, stop attacking for a period of time, and are more susceptible to other damaging skills. So the basics are Stagger->Topple->Massive Damage Skill.

So far it's been a pretty open world. I went further into the story, and reached a point where I could choose to join one of eight different divisions of the military force in the game. Everything from exploration and resource collection to defensive and offensive positions. Even a "mediator" position where you get bonuses for handling every day things with citizens.

I spent a lot more time running around and exploring. So far am around level 10, have tried my hand at gear improvements and farming supplies to do that. And have stumbled upon aggressive level 30+ creatures guarding my side quest objectives... going to try to see if they either go away at different times or maybe go to sleep or something so I can sneak by them. But you cannot collect objectives if a creature aggros you.

There seems to be a lot to do outside of the main story. I've only completed maybe one or two missions, but spent a few hours exploring and gathering stuff, and setting out probes to scan the alien planet.

It shares a theme with the Xenosaga/Xenogears games, but not a lot else. Different combat system, different equipment system, etc. The game centers around a ship of survivors from Earth. Earth is destroyed after two groups of aliens at war have a huge battle right at Earth's doorstep and Earth is just collateral damage. Humans try to defend themselves but the Aliens are too advance. Humans have developed Mechs to act as defense, but they are barely able to withstand the attacks and they try to use large ark styled space ships to evacuate humans from the planet.

Picked up Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth 3: V Generation. It's a pretty bizarre game, It's a jrpg/fighting/VN/parody. Barring an issue sorting out memory allocation (which you have to go edit something in the files to fix) it's been fairly bug free. Controls take some time to get used to figure out, because it's a console port, with a gamepad it would probably be more straightforward. There are a lot of interconnected systems that I don't fully understand yet. It's also a pretty easy game so far, but that may be just due to being decent at combat positioning. I've been enjoying it.

The game is huge.

I've explored most of the first continent, except a few places where it looks like I need the Mech to fly to. Including a very large, very high up "backbone" I think one character referred to it as. According to the map I'm 25% complete with the first continent. There looks to be 5 continents. I've stepped foot on one of them, and explored another just slightly. I came within viewing range of another but ended up being blocked by a large group of level 30 aggressive creatures.

I am 17+ hours in and level 17. I've tried a few classes. But I am only in Chapter 4 of the story, right after you join the military group.

So, lots of stuff to do. Lots. I could easily see spending 100+ hours playing this game and still finding stuff to do.
