I have done a little research since I started playing a week ago and find myself interested in the deepness of FFXI's crafting system. Therefore, I want to start a craft. I have narrowed it down to smithing, alchemy, and gold smithing, but cannot decide which to work on. In addition to all the following info, I play on Bahamut.
Alchemy- I think that making consumables would be useful for many fights and quests, and would possibly be lucrative as well.
Smithing- Maybe creating my own armor would be good, too? I have heard that smithing is awful, though, so...
Gold smithing- I have heard that this is the literal gold mine of crafts, but it takes a LOAD of gil to get started. I am a level 19, so don't know if this is true or not.

If you would, please help me pick and give the pros and cons of each of the above. I know that crafting is expensive regardless and I will have trouble funding it, but would like to begin stockpiling mats in advance. Thanks!

Alchemy is the least money making craft as far as I can tell. Potions etc all drop from everywhere... and the medicines are almost all sold by npcs, putting a floor price on auction sales. There may be some money making niches but no one will tell you about them as they want them for themselves!

I'd say goldsmithing is the most likely to net you money in the end. Yes, costs a fortune to level (not nearly so much nowadays but probably less to make money on as you level as well)

When it comes to sitting around not doing anything for long periods of time, only being active for short windows, and marginal changes and sidegrades I'd say FFXI players were the perfect choice for politicians.

You don't do alchemy for potions, you do alchemy for bullets. That is really the only reason to do it. That being said, some of the highest level bullets are quite popular for people who don't have access to delve bullets.
