I can't believe I have been playing this game for 5 years now and I just learned how to scroll the cursor through the entire alliance like you can using a PS2 controller.

For those of you that don't know how, you can go into Config on your menu > Misc. 2 > Key Assignments then assign keys for the move cursor up/down/left/right and voila! I'm sure this is going to help a few people out ^^

This function has just recently been added :)

But i'm too much used to use:
/target <axy> [x=1,2 ; y=0,1,2,3,4,5]

example:
/target <a10> will target the party leader of the topmost party.
/target <a25> will target the last person of the middle party.

awesome! I didn't know about this, for the reasons listed above! XD

Though that being said given the insane frame limiter on ffxi if you have, say, a series 6 nvidia card then it might be quicker to type it anyway ;) (though there is a very specific strategy to all that *pats nose*)

I didnt even know you could assign keys xD gonna have to check this out sometime lol

Wow that's awesome! I had no idea they added this. Normally I have a ps2 controller plugged into my computer and I'd have to switch between keyboard and controller if I wanted to target an alliance member quickly.

It's just a tiny bit faster than typing out commands manually, for me anyway, but I'll have to try this out.

For people with *gasp* windower ctrl+f1-f6 will target the top party members, and alt+f1-f6 will target middle party members.

The one Michelob's mentioned does require setting your keyboard to compact configuration first (makes no difference as you can use numberpad keys like normal anyhow but just need to remember to press space before you start typing chat lines in). Worked long before they introduced the <stal > tags but I remember telling someone how to do this and having them squeal with delight on vent - mine's set so U and D move me up and down the ally list and has been for a long long time.

I had been using /ma "Cure" <st> for the longest time until I found...
/ma "Cure" <stal> (selected target alliance)

You get a little blue cursor on your alliance party to the right of your screen.
Then you just arrow up or down to who you want to heal and enter.

Beats my old method of spam-tab, find the tank, /lockon... then they change gear, so I have to /ta Tankname, /lockon etc.

Neocloud actually had a dedicated healing macro set just for when he tanked. :P
Cures, -na spells, erase and haste... >.>

Point in short, try /ma "Cure" <stal> and see if you like that as an option:)

I wish I had known about assigning cursor movement to keys but now that they have added <stpt> and <stal> it doesn't really matter.

I've always used a controller to play, so this is nothing new to me. I've used "Cure <st>" since I started playing WHM, and I've always been able to target players in alliances by moving the cursor up and down.

I tried switching to 360 when the game came out for that (PS2 version never came out in Europe) and I can't play the game on controller for love nor money! I wanted to - cos my sofa is more comfy than my PC chair (and the cat claims it's HER computer chair) - I just can't do it!

I had a gamepad (specifically a PS2>PC converter) from day one of playing this game. Nothing else feels right. The ability to move, turn the camera, and scroll macros/menus at the same time (well, as much as your thumbs allow) is immensely helpful.

For anybody who hasn't tried it, or is fed up with keyboard controls, I highly suggest a gamepad or adapter. FFXI, like other FF games, was designed with a controller in mind.

I also used to use /target <a10> etc. Now I use CTRL+F-keys and ALT+F-keys for targeting alliance party members.

I use a combination of <stpt> and <stpc>. I like the <stpt> for party onry spells (Erase, Regen, etc) or if I know I am only going to be healing my party members (BCNMs, ENMs, etc).

The only thing I don't like about <stpt> is that you can't move your camera angle around when you select someone. If I am doing Campaign or Beseiged, I use <stpc> so I can target non party people.

Wow, this rocks, both the in-game and windower targeting will be very useful. ^^

I always forget whether to start on 0 or 1, but I did find an alternative technique. It's probably not as good as some of the other techniques listed as it is somewhat slower.

Once you target someone in your alliance, they are added to the autotranslate. So if you just spam <tab> to get everyone in there, you can do

/ta Fo<tab><up arrow><enter><enter>
and it will target Foobar in your alliance.

/ta does same as /target but fewer keystrokes
Fo is first few letters of player's name
<tab> open autotranslate
<up arrow> wraps around to bottom entry. It puts the people at the bottom
<enter> to select autotranslate
<enter> to finish target command

Seems like up until a couple years ago I could hit f10/f11 on my keyboard and target the leaders of other parties in the alliance and then it seemed to suddenly stop working.

sadly...It was only a few weeks ago I found the AH in upper Jueno after having played since late '04 :). Found the port jeuno AH by accident a couple years back...

I'll have to try out some of these targeting ideas soon :).

Something I've been wondering, in something like campaign with lots of npcs and pets its hard to target the actual enemy mobs sometimes...Is there some secret to finding the enemy in those crowds that I haven't heard about yet?

I target a player who's hitting the mob I want to hit (usually used to find a fortification in a cloud of lag) and use /as <t >

I've been trying to spread the joy that is <stpt> and <stal> targeting. I just recently reworked my macros and changed the targeting from <stpc> to those new target commands, and I have to say it's much more efficient!

I just wrote about this to the random WHM facts thread too. So many healers struggle with tanks who change gear constantly and make you lose your target. <stpt> and <stal> remove that issue (since the arrow is in the party member list instead of hovering over the member's head), and I'm loving it. ^^

The new commands are all well and good - but I've always used <stpc> targetting and locking on to find the person I'm looking to cure in things like kited fights (I started as RDM trying to hunt down BLMs and PLDs for refresh when they're out of range at Kirin), and I like to be able to tab around and heal people outside ally as well. It's just personal preference though - the up and down through ally list method detailed here works for me, and as long as someone isn't blinking so constantly they don't actually load on my screen I can cast on them no problem.
