I just started playing FFXI again and decided to play mage classes this time. Former melee guy... starting with WHM. I am wondering how would be best to level WHM with all the people leeching from abyssea and so on... Do I solo to a certain level and then try to leech myself? I'm assuming this will be the case, especially since I started in Windy and it will be quite some time for before I venture overseas to Selbina. I was thinking Saratu > Tahrongi > Buburimu then on to try and find a Qufim party?

What would be the next step solo? How does a newbie WHM solo, anyways? Club + Shield I presume? I guess I will have to unlock my SJ and chocobo license. Probably ok to bypass Kazham pass for now? Basically, I'm look for some tips on how to level quickly as a noob with no funds...

By the way, I started on Asura if any WHMs care to befriend a lonely fellow WHM!

If you want to lvl just to 30 solo then start leeching, you could get to 20 in Buburimu or Valkurm. I'd recommend Valkurm though, I'm just more used to it more than Buburimu <.<. But you can get to 30 in valk/bubu.

The xp boosts to lower level have definitely made it easier to work your way up. The starter zones you pretty much have down...and you're right about club/shield for melee. Get yourself some cheap food like Meat Jerky if you can to assist your melee.

I wouldn't worry now about Abyssea. You have 30 levels of WHM and at least 15 levels of subjob, plus some quests in your way too. By the time you get to 30 you should have a bit better feel for things.

Well 1-15 was easy in Windy starter areas. Tahrongi got much slower... Still doable. I just dinged 18 and plan on trying partying now. Solo WHM will take forever, especially as my first job.

I do want some advice on my current thoughts getting to 90.

WHM 1-20
BLM 1-40 (want to do some BCNM for phalanx, etc)
Unlock SCH
Will need to get WHM to about 25 before
SCH 1-49
WHM/SCH to 90

Does this seem like a solid game plan? Anything I am missing here?

I don't disagree. It's just killing stuff solo on whm is very, very slowwwww.

Start FoV solo then look for other people to team up with and proceed to duo/trio FoV. Standing around waiting for a party is silly.

Also be sure to get signet, exp band and cheap food.

Soloing has become pretty easy with FoV, the refresh really comes in handy. But for me, I hardly had to solo past 10. If you can find a good linkshell, you should have a few people always willing to level their subs.

And actually, maybe this sounds weird to you, but after the initial joy of leveling super fast in abyssea, it seems as though some people are remembering they enjoyment of the party dynamic from before. I actually don't want to leech anymore. now that I have a 90, and can farm the gear i had trouble getting before, I want to level the old way. I want to use my sobhoro(sp?), o. kote, voyager sallet, etc...I'm actually trying to avoid level syncing too low now, so I can get enjoyment out of it.

I have 2 accts and I plan to duo blu to 75 outside of abyssea with myself, trio or more if i can find friends to join me. I miss the enjoyment of having a tight party, where everyone knows what to do. even having lousy parties, because they remind you of what a good party is.

I'm on Gilgamesh, soon to be Carbuncle. anyone wants to party the old fashioned way, send jahar or josher a /tell. I'll always have room for a whm

I'm almost sad to say you aren't leeching in Abyssea when on WHM. I was in trash gear in the mid-50's and main healing a party and helping heal another (neither the tank party) while running for dominion notes. WHMs massive heals + abysseas redonkulous refresh rate means that you really can't leech whm in abyssea.

/bst is your best friend for low level soloing. So long as your bst is the same level or higher than your whm you will not be gimped on charm. You should be able to easily charm em mobs with some chr gear and chain em and t mobs. I've found that to be the fastest and easiest way to get a mAge job to 30.

Another thing to consider, is while soloing whm can be quite slow, don't fall in the trap of assuming higher base exp means more exp per hour. Find the weakest easy prey you can and mass murder them, even with a hammer you can do moderate damage thanks to level correction.
