I've been back about 3 months now, and in that time I've taken my old character who had one job above 30 to WHM68, SCH72 and RDM50 (well I'm happy about that, that's still probably quite slow in the grand scheme of things these days!)
On White Mage though, I'm getting close to dinging 70, and that 1M+ price tag of Raise III is worrying me. I'm the kind of person who likes to have a full assortment of spells and gear (I took time off leveling in the mid 50s to quest my Recall scrolls, and have just finished my AF quests and bought myself a Noble's Tunic, which I equipped for the first time last night!) However, I don't have anywhere near 1 million gil at the moment, so if I want the spell, it's going to mean a week or two of not leveling (I can't play every night for multiple hours like some people here ^^), which is a fortnight I could be using to do new content (like try out Abyssea, which is why I'm leveling White Mage, or do more CoP storyline).
So my question is, how important is Raise III these days? Will I be considered a bad WHM for not having it, and should I actually stop leveling to go and get it, or keep going and purchase it when I've saved the gil?

Given your situation I'd say it's not worth stopping for. Exp flows pretty freely in Abyssea, and most endgame melees these days get dirty looks if they don't bring Apocalypse (permanent reraise) so the amount of actually casting any tier of Raise has dwindled down substantially.
Do Abyssea for a while and keep yourself well-geared. When you can comfortably afford the spell, be sure to pick it up if only for those non-Abyssea situations where you'll want to cast multiple raises in a short timespan. No one should mind R2 until then, though.

That was the impression I was getting; I've seen numerous people say that people who waited for an R3 these days were laughed at with the speed of XP flow in Abyssea, and given the max XP loss these days is 2.4k, with an R2 you're losing 1.2k max. Given R3 can restore 90% of the 2.4k, the actual difference is 960xp when compared to a R2.
If you assume a Gusgen Mines GoV page gives 660xp the first time you complete it (more for each subsequent completion of course), you've actually broken even from an R2 after two pages, in Gusgen, which takes all of, what, 10 minutes, if you're unlucky?. You can do it in 1 page in Bostaunieux Oubliette, you're getting 1340xp on page 2.
So after thinking about it, I can understand the spell isn't that necessary anymore, I suppose I'm more worried about perception, and just don't want to annoy people by not having it.

I know your feeling :) I recently got my WHM to 75 and I'm lacking Raise III as well. With all the linkshell events and static party stuff, there simply isn't enough time to go camp that NM that might drop it and I refuse to pay the 900K people are charging for the scroll on AH. As the previous poster said, EXP is dirt cheap these days and I prefer to level up higher and get more useful stuff like Protect V, Shell V, Regen IV and the Boost series of scrolls. That way I'll be a better WHM in keeping my party members alive, so I won't need Raise III at all :)
I also think, SE is going to add a better version of Raise III in the next update (level 90-95), maybe even a Raisega III or a Reraisega III (one can dream, no? :). So, I'll wait for that and put R3 on hold for a while.
I do warn people that don't know me and party with me as their WHM that I'm missing the scroll. So far, nobody kicked me for it.

I have had whm at 90 for quite some time and absolutely refuse to pay for it. Much like Demetres, I don't have the time to camp an nm that spawns every 72 hours! I have tried doing the Brothers ENM, but do to misreading the walkthru, I ported in solo and died horribly! It is on the list of things to do/get, but it is not high up on the list. Everyone in my LS knows I don't have it and nobody cares. I don't even warn people in pickups because if you are worried about xp loss, then you are not focused on the right stuff!

Actually, the difference is even smaller. Raise 1 is 50% exp restored (1200 lost), 2 is 75% (600 lost), and 3 is 90% (240 lost).
So the difference is actually 360 exp. Which, in abyssea, really is nothing. Hell, it's not much anywhere anymore hah
The diligent people who actually bother getting their abyssites will have 9x lenity abyssites anyway, which is like an automatic R3 inside Abyssea even if you home point (-90% EXP loss). Getting an R3 (or just using apoc atma) on top of this is 99% EXP restored (24 points of EXP lost)
EXP loss is not a big deal anymore and anyone who says otherwise is a scrub. The main perk of having more Raise spells is for fewer cooldown issues, particularly if you're weakened yourself and have your recast timers shot. And even this is less of a big deal nowadays, thanks to apoc atma.

It's useful not so much for less xp loss but to have more raise spells if recast is down (happens sometimes).

You could always try a few XNM for it as well.
E-vase-ive action drops it, but not that often. It's a KSNM30. If you're not using your KS at all, you could always throw in a few. You can likely solo it now on a bunch of jobs, so that alone is 30k gil I suppose.
And you could also try doing ENM Brothers. Scouter's Rope and Hedgehog bomb still fetch a decent price on some server's. It has a higher chance of dropping Raise 3.
If you find battlefields fun, that's another alternative than buying it

Beware though: the "uncapped" ENMs are actually still capped at 75. You won't be going in there as 90 to curbstomp it.

Yeah, I should have mentioned that. I've done them since the cap increased with some 75 gear.
