Mana Management , targetingFollow

Hello! I've returned to ffxi after a rather long absence, so I am used to being a whm in the old party set-up. Today I participated in my first alliance for GoV. It was very, very fast-paced, and I got a few levels in the time it once would have taken to get one. (I love that!) However, while I was the only whm in the group, there were several others with healing abilities of various sorts. Without those others, I don't think we'd have gotten very far.

I went through mana very quickly (level 25) and had to recover mana during fights, more often than not. Maybe I should level cooking enough to have some helpful juices on hand... Any other advice?

I found targeting alliance members efficiently impossible. (Party members were no problem to target.- I used the f1-6 keys) Although I put <stal> in my cure macros, I still ended up having to tab through all targets to get to members not in my party. Needless to say, it was time-consuming. Any advice?

Thanks so much!

Regarding targeting, over the years I've landed on a mix of all the different ways to target. There's no one way that works best.

My first method is F1-F6 because it's fast and reliable.

If it's someone outside my party, I generally don't bother with <stal>. Instead, I'll use one of two methods. I either type "/ta name" to target them, or I use F1 to select myself, pivot the camera so that it'll only take a couple of tabs to get to them, then use tab to target them.

Those 3 methods get me pretty good results. Of course, the "/ta" method requires being a fast typist for it to pay off, but the other two are pretty simple.

At level 25 you're not going to have tons of mana anyway. Don't forget to get field support and choose the 'Refresh' option so you will always be regenerating 1mp per tic anyway. Juices are nice and so are cookies. Ginger cookies are very cheap and come from an NPC or from the Auction House. They will improve how quickly you get your MP back. If you level with a BRD from now on, make sure they are in your party because they can give you Ballad for another 1 mp per tic. If you have the gil and/or time look into some hMP gear to improve how quickly you get your MP back when resting. I'm assuming you know about this but items such as the pilgrim tunica/baron's slops/mohbwa sash and if you don't mind camping it, the pilgrim's wand will all help :)

In terms of keeping MP usage efficient, make good use of Regen and Curaga. Anyone with DNC or /DNC will help a bit with curing and sambas. You can't possibly cure 18 people by yourself!

Totally off topic, but every time I see your signature, Eldelphia, I can't help but smile. My Shaman on EQOA was named Fortuna and I loved her!! Smiley: smile

Use ctrl+f1-6 for the top party, and alt+f1-6 for the middle party.

Was going to suggest this myself, but keep in mind this is a Windower function only. I use this to target the person and then still have spells with the <stal> pronoun to avoid the chance they'll blink away before I cast.

THANK YOU for the ctrl targeting trick! I was using the old method before.

To the OP, if you are finding that you are trying to target your target first and THEN casting the spell (with <stal> in the macro), but then find you have to target all over again, try not targeting anyone and casting the spell with macro <stal>. You will notice a small blue arrow appear next to a name in your party, which can then be controlled with the up/down arrows through the members of the party/alliance, etc. I find doing this with an alliance helps because I have the cure spell ready to go, and I can sort of "skim" the list until someone gets low enough.
