i do not know where you got either of these pieces of information, and i am not trying to come across as arrogant, but both of these are wrong. no invisible spell "stacks", what happens is this, whenever you cast any spell or use any ability invisible wears off, so when you are invisible and cast invisible, the first one wears off and the new one takes its place immediately. it works the same for any way to invis yourself including invisible, tonko, prism powders, hide and camoflague. the part about being visible briefly when recasting tonko is only in the animation, but the status icon is there the entire time, making you invisible to mobs.
You've contradicted yourself from what I read. If Invis doesn't stack and the first one always wears off as you first say, then you are visible briefly even if the status icon remains. Since I have personally seen someone get aggro during that brief second of visiblity during the Tonko reapplication, I'm not the one that is wrong.

EDIT: He started reapplying as soon as he got the 1st warning, so it didn't wear off in the middle of the cast. He was not aggro'd by a true sight mob, either.

as far as what happened to the ranger you saw, i do not know.

but i do know that the invisible spell (or any form of it) overwrites the the previous one immedietilly. try it. i have do it many many times, and will do it again if you are on unicorn and wish to watch me do it.

I can also comfirm that invisible does indeed stack! I just got my Rogue's Culotte last night in Castle Oztroja and while waiting the Yags to turn their back stand almost kissing one I recast tonko without aggro.

I've been coffer hunting for about 8lvls now and I only use Thief's Tools after my mimic encounter with living keys and skel keys. I have a 85-90% success rate with Thief's Tools. However at lvl 57 I have a DEX totaling 109 O.O.

Anyway good luck my fellow Thieves and happy hunting unless you're on my server =P

I have a question.

Would a 22 THF be able to open the locked doors in Phomuina Aqueducts? I would love to finish up this mission since I already beat the minotaur and got the cutscene at the ladder.

yea, i do MCaves often cuz zone is right around the corner (2 corners, but dgaf) and is invis only, no doors or stupid obstacles. there is the warlord in that dead end, but u shouldnt have to go near that ne way. plus all the pops are RIGHT friggin close... Thidauge, how long was it after u opened the first that u found the second. i thought it was 30 minute delay til pop??

No clue if the list is still being updated these days, but just in case...

Using Thief's Tools, Mithra, level 68:

Sea Serpent Grotto (chest)
Labyrinth of Onzozo (chest)
Oldton Movalpolos (chest)
Newton Movalpolos (coffer)
Den of Rancor (coffer)
Ifrit's Cauldron (coffer)
Pso'Xja (chest)

All in 1-3 attempts, no mimics.

I have the following to add in:

Newton Movalopolis (Coffer) - Lvl 61 w/ Skeleton Key (got Map)

I got aggro just as I picked, so, I used Hide and dropped said aggro. ^^

Worse macro ever... using an item makes invisible go away... maybe inverting these actions (i.e: sneak then invisible) would work much better.

Look for the area you're going to pick maybe you'll luck out and someone posted coffer locations and their possible spawn points. As for picking you're prolly best to stand infront of it.

2. You are visible very briefly when you reapply Tonko. While unlikely, it is possible to get aggro'd by sight only mobs while doing this. Saw this happen to a RNG/NIN looking for his AF coffer in Monastic Caverns. He was quite surprised and none too happy.

i just wanted to comment on this statement, and offer a simple test to the poster.

ok, here's the deal: tonko doesn't "stack" *****. it simply over-writes the previous tonko. in my experience, tonko lasts 3 minutes. after that time you get about 4 warnings then it drops. lets say you recast tonko with 30 seconds still remaining. when you recast it, you lose those 30 seconds, but now have a fresh 3 minutes. so it never really "drops." and you CAN NOT BE DETECTED during that slight animation time when it seems that you become visible.

here's how you can prove it to yourself: go to bibiki bay, castle o, or anywhere else that has sight detecting AND tracking mobs only. gobs and yags are perfect for this. stand nose to nose w/ an IT+++ gob or yag w/ tonko up, and recast it directly in front of him. if your theory is correct, you are a dead man. luckily, this isn't the case! in fact, this simple test will eventually make you a lot of gil when you can tonko-->steal a gold coin-->hide-->tonko without moving from the mob's line of sight.

slightly off topic, i've actually noticed that my rogue's vest allows hide to last for 4:30 seconds, almost the entire time needed for steal and hide to charge. this saves me a ton of gil in shinobi-tabi, and makes gil/hour rate go up substantially assuming i'm lucky with my steals. you can also skill up evasion this way. steal, let mob take a couple whacks at you-->hide-->rest. rinse, repeat :)

gl, happy hunting :)

ummm in order for tonko ichi + silent oil to work youd have to use the silent oil first. invis wont stay up if you do actions like casting spells, attacking, or using items.
ur macro'd have to be

/item "Silent oil" <me>
/wait 1
/ma "Tonko: Ichi" <me>

THF51/NIN24 (yeah was gimped at that time)
Location: Monastic Cavern
Purpose: AF Gloves
Tools: Thief's Tools
Fail - Trap - Death - Raise (thank you JP RDM) - Success

Location: Phom...Aqueducts
Purpose: Mission
Tools: Thief's Tools
Success on first try at the door

Thats all the picking i have done. I usually have a key when i open chests.

I really wonder what chests are worth picking. Can we get a 'Best profit chests' thread?

*edit: forgot the tools...

Well... I recently started my lockpicking fun about 2 weeks ago. Reasonably successful so far. I started in Ordelles Caves as 45 THF/WHM while on my RSE run. I picked 2 chests no problem using THF tools. The other 2 chests I actually used Ordelles Keys. I have since picked chests in there purely for looting purposes. I have failed twice... once a simple fail where I had to try again. The second was last night as 51 THF/WHM and I was weakened for a full hour! O.o

I am currently in Fei'Yin hunting the chests for loot. I picked the lock first time no problem (again THF tools) to get my Teleport Vahzl quest item. Since then I have picked the chests 4 times with one fail. And that was a weakness of 30 mins. The other 3 times I just got Gil. :( I want a Life Belt really. ^^

I have also picked one coffer in the Monastic Cavern as 51 THF/WHM using THF tools with no problem for my THF AF2 Rusty Gauntlets.

I have noticed that if I pick a lock for something quest related then I have yet to fail. But if I'm simply looting I have mixed results. I've yet to try out Living Keys or Skeleton Keys. Jeuno had no Living keys at all in AH before I set out on this run.

What I do myself is load up on DEX gear. I even equip my AF dagger to give +2 DEX. Currently my DEX stands at 54 +19. I think this may help somewhat but I cannot be sure. Perhaps if I switch to another type of key my chances of Life Belt drop will increase?

EDIT: Just done a 5th chest run today and finall got a Life Belt!!! At last!!! So that about 13K in Gil and one Life Belt.... not bad considering that they sell on my server for about 140K give or take a bit. I need to log for work now... but will be back again tomorrow for another run. ^^
