Great post I'll us it often.

So not sure how much this has been said before as I don't have time to read all the posts. I was in Ordelles Caves for my RSE. Found the chest tried to pick Failure, tired again Success. On both times I used Thiefs Tools, no mimic or trap.

And for those of you who pay between 5-16k per stack, I just payed 91k for two stacks on Bahamut from the npc in Bastok. Thank god for Goldsmithing!!
I may look good, and I may be a chick magnet, but I aint no sissy.

you can't get a mimic from a chest anyways.

if there aren't any picks on the AH, i sometimes just shout in jeuno a couple times and usually get someone to craft me up a set. if you offer somewhere between 20k and 25k you'll generally find someone to make them for you pretty quickly.

Went to Monastic caverns tonight as 50 thf/25 nin. Of course the standard invis...run and look...invis...run and look...etc. When suddenly....boom I see it, a treasure coffer. Now, this is the first time I ever tried to pick a lock so I'm nervous, not to mention there are two nasty IT orcs standing practically on top of the chest.

I wait for what feels like forever, finally after about 5 minutes they turn around, I hit pick macro and boom, old gauntlets first try! Couldn't believe it. I hit my panic macro as an orc turns and notices me, and I laugh at the big dumb orc as my log reads Petite evades, Petite evades. Warped back to Jeuno and finished the rest of my prerequisites for AF2. Gonna go kill darkspark tomorrow!

What a great feeling. I love thf, why can't the rest of the game love it too when it comes time for party invites?

If your in a party with a thief and he picks a coffer would it go into the not pool or would he automaticly get the reward?

if you pick a chest or coffer while in a party a few different scenarios will occur:

1. if the reward is a map, the thf will get it automatically.
2. if the reward is money, it will be split amongst everyone equally.
3. if it is an item, it will go into the treasure pool, and anyone can lot.

i do not recommend picking chests and coffers while in an exp party. if you pop a mimic or get weakened, you look like a fool. but for farming or pt'ing with friends, a coffer can add some nice extra monies for the group.

I've had some serious troubles making any sort of money picking chests/coffers the last 6 months or so. I'm not sure if something was nerfed as for our skill or what not.

I get weakened almost every time now when I pick a coffer/chest. I am using THF tools. That's all I have ever used. Now I have also never gotten a Mimic. Not once. I've picked probably 300 plus coffer/chests.

In the last 6 months though I have basically pretty much given up our ability to use tools to unlock coffer/chests. It all happened the day I had exactly 10 in a row weakened states all right on top of each other. Am I supposed to stop using THF tools? Do you hit a certain level and the game is forcing you to move up to a different type of key for better success?

I did notice something though. I must explain. The 10 in a row weakened states happened in Oztroga. When I am in an area where I can pick up a map, it has been a gaurantee open and map aquisition immediately. After gaining the map , picking a coffer will result in a weakened state for me.

Maybe there is something to learn from this? THF tools help auto collect maps you do not own? Using tools at too high of a level for gil or items result in weakness? I am level 70 so I'm not sure how others mileage will vary. I know I am very wary of picking any coffer/chest unless I don't have the map of the area.

I really should experiment with new lock picking methods. All in all THF tools were really good for not picking a Mimic. Never had one yet. They haven't been so good being this high of a level after I've obtained a map, but will any lock pick method? I suppose I'd take weaken any day of the weak over popping a Mimic and having to warp out. (though if you want to get rid of weakened state fast. Warp home, change job and die)

i have noticed a definite increase in lock picking difficulty recently. i have only ever used thf tools as well, but i also feel that it may be time to try skelly keys. i have never failed to pick a coffer/chest containing a map either.

i used to pick chests in davoi all day long and never encounter a weakness. now i probably go 1/4 chests resulting in weakness. personally, i find that to be pretty rediculous. something has obviously been changed.

mimics have been very nice to me so far, as i have only ever gotten a few, and only killed one time. but i prefer not to have to warp out of say, castle zvahl because of a mimic.

i'm beginning to think that perhaps a different kind of tool will be more effective depending on whether the target is a chest or coffer. the general thought thus far has been the idea of risk/reward regarding the different kinds of tools. with living key giving the greatest chance of reward, but also the greatest risk of failure. i can't agree or disagree with this line of thought because i haven't tested it yet. but i think i'll go grab a stack of each kind of tool and see if i can find some sort of correlation.

gl and happy hunting ^^

I have picked ALOT of coffers and chests and have been weakened 6 times out of 200+ chests and have only seen 1 mimic out of over 100 coffers picked.

Out of all my picking experance I can CONFERM that
The higher your INT the less likely you will set off a trap/mimic.
And the higher you DEX the less failures you will have. (and waste a picking tool/key)

I have been a playing thf for over a year and it is my job of choice for makeing gil. (farming or chest/coffer picking) and i have spent alot of time and effort (and gil) figuring out what stats help the most at doing certain tasks.

I hope this helps future THF's and remember , don't be so greedy as to deny another player a coffer or treasure chest they need for there Artifact Equipment or quests.
Nothing is impossable!
Just mathematicaly improbable.

So far ive managed to do well in all of my locking picking.

as for stats, id definitly say that INT and DEX are the important stats
Some Equipment that could really help out with lockpicking are Crimson Swords, which add +5 INT and have seemed to have really helped out with my lockpicking, and have your second weapon increase your DEX if you are subbing NIN
and as for gear, just go for as much DEX and INT as possible

I picked the Monastic Cavern at lvl 51 THF/25 RDM using Thief Tools and im now a lvl 54 THF/27 NIN getting ready to go get my AF pants

hope any of this info helps out any future lockpickers :)

SE themselves has stated that stats do not affect lockpicking rates.
INT does not affect it.
DEX does not affect it.
No stat affect picking locks.

very helpful as I've been levelling THF.

Don't know if this has been updated but I've successfully opened an Eldieme Coffer for my RDM hands key item as 52 THF, with a skeleton key.

I picked my AF coffer in Castle Zvahl as 51 thf/nin, mithra, DID get aggro from high-teir Kindred and failed twice while being hit, picked on third try and then got splattered and de-levelled :P

Hi, I'm a THF/DRG, don't plan on using NIN, and am wondering if it would be better to level RDM(for sneak/invis/etc) as a sub for chest/coffer soloing. Thanks!

thanks for the info, but I have used thief tools from the start and have poped 5-6 chests (including for RSE) and 1 coffer, all opened first time and no mimics.

I can't wait for the AF coffers, couple of stacks of tools, and a bit of help for the NMs, lol, easy

since the above post I have had af coffers, some take 3-6 sets of thf tools, to pop, but still no mimics.

i picked baileys and davoi coffers today first try

baileys was a pain, took 4 hours before i found a chest (some competition i guess), in middle of ahirman alley but the 2 were at other end of hallway (thank god) and i was able to get it picked and warped before they noticed me

davoi took few minutes. i found a coffer guarded by a single VT orc, just waited for orc to face away, drop invis, and successfuly picked my key item. i killed dark spark tonight and now have my gloves.

(i did castle o legit with a coffer key i got from skill up as a different job)

i used theif's tools, and went through 5 stacks of silent oils and 1 1/2 stacks of tonko powders while getting coffers.

Guess I'll share my AF-picking experience, too. All were at level 50 on the same day. I love THF. ^^

Davoi: Thief's Tool (fail). Thief's Tool (mimic). Since PD was down but I wanted to get it taken care of (but didn't fancy dying if I ran into another mimic), I used a coffer key I had in storage. Not one of my proudest moments on THF. ; ;

Oz: Thief's Tool (weakened). Skeleton Key (success). Interestingly enough, the coffer that I failed on (in one of the halls by the leech pond) ended up respawning behind the Brass Door, where I could comfortably sit and wait for weakness to wear. Which luckily took only about 10 minutes or so.

Zvahl: Skeleton Key (success). Went as THF/WHM, and that's definitely nerve-wracking, having only 120MP (with an apple pie) while my Sneak keeps wearing (costing me 27MP since I have to recast both).

So I'm 0/3 on Thief's Tools so far, and 2/2 on Skeleton Keys. I was behind the coffers on the Thief's Tools (due to mob placement and wanting as much of an aggro cushion as possible), in case that does lessen the chances of a successful pick. (Logically it would, but somehow you can still manage to unlock things from behind. Silly chests. ;)

I've had pretty good luck over-all with picking chests and coffers. Only one or two Mimics and I've been weakened more by Chests than coffers. I support the theory that being over-leveled and using Tools on chests will likely result in being weakened (level 64 picking a Delkfutt chest).

I mainly carry Thief's Tools. They're cheap and readily available. I believe there's a vendor in each nation that sells them when the nation is in first but only sells them at night (or when some other situation occurs). On most chests, you'll break even if you get gil, on most coffers you'll profit at 4k/tool.

I also always carry a Key Ring belt with a few key charges left on it for the tough ones.

The other day I was in Newton on my way to the solo ENM60, so I popped over and found a coffer. Failed once, got the map on the second tool. Went hunting later on in Ru'Aun Garden and found TWO coffers, popped the first for the map and got weakened on the second with a TTool. Then, while searching for the Curtana ???, I found the coffer in Ve'lugannon Palace. I blew through my last 4 Tools on it and ended up going back to Bastok to get my Key ring belt out of storage. Popped it in Bastok and when I failed on with the Skeleton key upon returning to Ve'[TAB], I waited another 12 minutes on my last key. Used the belt and... popped the coffer!

I have (what I believe) to be all maps for Sky at level 64, never having touched a coffer key party, one week after getting Sky (not to mention SSG, Temple of Uglypeople, Newton Movapolis and a few other coffer maps) and it feels darn good to be a Thief. I won't even go into how pleasant my AF experience was after spending countless hours in Beadeaux coffer parties on Monk!

As far as stats not affecting success in picking coffers, I'm forced to ask for the source of this information. Before that nail-biting Ve'lugannon coffer, I popped a squid sushi and maxed out my ACC with SH and Life belt and I failed. I then put on my cotehardie, RK Belt+1 and AF hands and legs (basically my SATA gear) and after 5 fails without these stats, popped it. Thf relies a lot on luck and a lot of it is in your head (the reason I carry my four-leaf mandragora bud with me) so do what makes you feel best about it and that way, you'll have no regrets or "shoulda-dones".

And as far as denying other people their AF and quests.. I agree. On my way for LB3 I came across a coffer in Monastic Cavern with a Mithra Thf who told me "Go ahead and pick it, I'm out of tools". So instead of getting my 8k I gave her a few tools and watched as she cracked it open. I gotta say that that felt better than cracking the coffer myself would have.

Last night I was in a coffer key party for a Pld friend in Castle Zvahl Baileys when we came across a coffer. We had been killing for an hour with no key and I asked if I could pop it, to which they agreed. I got a Mimic which we killed with ease who gave us our key. I'm curious if you're more likely to get a Mimic when there's someone in the party with an AF quest active? I can't honestly recall having gotten a Mimic without having an AF quest active or someone in my pt with one active. It would almost make sense since the Mimics always drop a key (and we found the coffer 20 minutes later).

I have confirmed that you can get weakness with a skelton key. I was in Giddus skilling up Throwing at level 29, and I spotted a treasure chest. I tried to pop it and boom I'm weak. I must be unlucky oh..well... It's confirmed.

I really dont think INT has anything to do with lockpicking at least on the basis that the AF armor has a +INT stat on it. I think all AF armors have a pointless stat hence RDM has +CHR. What would a RDM do with CHR, charm a mob to death?

I do have a couple of questions regarding coffers and lockpicking.

#1) Two of my friends are starting their AFs as well and they all have pieces in Castle Oztroja. If I were to go in a party with them to the castle, would they be able to get their pieces from me picking the coffers?

#2) I have been trying to get COR recently and I used up my one free Lamian Fang Key. I am only level 50 so taking the key-dropping mobs would be a problem. When I get to the iron gate it says you may be able to pick it with Thief's Tools. I burned a stack on it with no success. Has anyone tried it yet, and if so, what did you use and at what level?

Only a person that needs the AF can get it from a coffer and only when they're on that specific job. That means nobody else can pop the coffer for them and it unfortunately means that you on Thief can't pop a coffer for Nin AF or any other job.

As far as the gates in the new areas.. ugh. I've heard of level 75s blowing through a stack of tools with no luck. You might be better off waiting for someone to pass through or finding a pt or something.

Perhaps they'll add more tools that will work better on ToAU gates and such?

I love thief on AF, they are the easiest to get. <3 same with relic armor, is you have Dynamis ls usually aren't many thiefs so if a piece of relic drops for a thief, you're like the first one to get it. yipee!!!
