Dat dagger... Aphotic Kukri upgrade pathFollow

In the end I grabbed the Delve dagger first. I wanted to get the great axe but I don't have the required clear and it's going to be a while before I can get it, at this rate. (Now I want to troll people by telling them I have a Delve THF and seeing if they'll take that to plasm runs instead of a relic bard.)

Now I'm staring at the upgrade paths and I'm confused as ****. I'm assuming I should go the "attack" path for the upgrades since that seems the most obvious one, but there might be something else I'm missing. I don't see a thread on here discussing it yet.

Help?

Attack or accuracy, depending on a number of factors, I'd say. But I actually think accuracy may be the smart choice here. As a mandau thf I'm actually thinking about the accuracy path because accuracy is such a big deal in SoA and as a non-2h (hopefully this changes soon enough) I'm quite a ways behind in accuracy. Getting +20-30ish from my offhand would be amazing. Thief has the ability to max dDEX for a massive +15% crit rate and +10 dex would greatly aid in that effort as well.

Attack has historically been a massive thief weakness, and it still is to a point, but I've found that I'm mostly above 1.0 pDIF on these NM's, while having poor accuracy, so I think the emphasis needs to change to accuracy for a little while.

Also, good luck with delve thf vs relic brd on plasm farming. Thief gets put into the tank party, so no group buffs and occasionally poor healing. And of course no haste. So yeah...I'd only do it for a change of pace, not so much that it's any more fun...

I concur that accuracy in Adoulin stuff is a major problem, so much so that as bard I've defaulted to madrigals on boss NMs because the whiff fest is otherwise too painful. No point in swinging faster if you're missing every time.

On the other hand, I'll primarily be using THF on non-Adoulin content, and with capped dagger accuracy really isn't a problem on anything that was made prior to Adoulin.

If that's the case attack all the way, the only time you MIGHT cap attack is during SA+WS (and only for the critical hits) on abyssea. Otherwise attack will not get capped for you.

I went with the attack path. It also gets a significant chunk of ACC as well and more fSTR/ATT seems more valuable on the weapon slot to me.

Once you start upgrading Manibozho and getting some of the better pieces for high evasion stuff, like honed tathlum, New Earrings, Vespid Mantle etc, ACC becomes less of an issue...at least for farming Delve Fracture Plasm.

When I go to DD on THF, I'm parsing in the 90-95% hitrate range pretty consistently THF/WAR using RCB. And I'm no where near the best set in terms of ranking up pieces. Rotating Aggressor > Conspirator > Feint helps us to alleviate our acc woes. But as you said, this is really only an issue if you aren't in the buff party.

For the most part though, I'd rather be in the tank party and pulling to be honest. Most Pullers I see are still pulling 1 or 2 mobs max and leave too many gaps with solid DDs. That lead time, just like Meripos of old, is the biggest thing that cuts into your max potential plasm....Whereas I'm effortlessly training 5-6 at a time non-stop, saccing t4-5 NMs to the singular PLD zombie to free up more DD slots etc. Fracture farming is one of those times I'm glad I'm OCD and kept my max evasion set (including 2 thokchas). THF Evasion + fajin boots + Flee = Win for Fracture Pulling.

THF can DD in Fracture pretty respectably (I still out-parse most DD's I come across), but I think it's greatest potential contribution to a run is pulling. So much so that I run regularly with people that know I have a well geared BRD that can pull quite well in its own right (50% pdt, etc)...yet they still ask me to come THF and seek me out for THF when putting together runs....Those 10-11k runs.

Just obtained this dagger after a short break from playing. Who do I speak to about the paths or how do I go about choosing one etc please?

There is an Elvaan NPC in Western Adoulin at (J-10) in the Inventor's Coalition named Benjamien. If you trade him the weapon, he will give you the option to Mezzotint it on one of the three available path, and then will give you a list of the three, letting you "preview" the rank 1 for each path.

For Aphotic Kukri, your three paths are

Path 1: Attack path, with Rank 15 stats of +10 STR, +10 Accuracy, and +15 Attack
Path 2: Accuracy path, with Rank 15 stats of +10 DEX, +15 Accuracy, and +10 Attack
Path 3: Evasion path, with Rank 15 stats of +10 AGI, +10 Accuracy, and +15 Evasion

If you choose a path, you can at a later point go back and wipe the progress on it, but any points you've used on upgrading the weapon will be lost, so if you took a Rank 10 Path 2 Aphotic and wanted to change it over to a Path 1, you could, but it'd start at Rank 0 again (as if you just obtained the weapon and had it mezzotinted, but not augmented) and all the points used to get it to Rank 10 would be lost.

Excellent thankyou, speaking to him now but undecided what to choose, I am DNC main and THF secondly... was thinking of path B for the dex which would help with rudras storm, what is your opinion or advice please?

Edit: I forgot to ask, if the aphotic kukri is off handed will the path augments still be active?

You would get more out of the Str path really, especially if you're offhanding it for the sake of Twashtar. The Str and Attack from Path A would do much more for you than the Dex from Path B.

The path augments will be active still, yes, but take note that the Accuracy and Attack from the Dagger skill on your Aphotic will only affect the hand you're using it in, not both hands, so your Twashtar won't be receiving anything from that skill.

Thanks again, I will go the STR path as opposed to the DEX.

I cant seem to find out what I need to give the NPC, I think its airlixir's but not sure how many or what type? (+1, +2 etc)
#11 Sep 01 2013 at 3:13 AM Rating: Excellent
It is airlixirs, and which ones you give him won't matter, as the only difference between them is how many points each gives. Airlixir gives 10 points, Airlixir +1 gives 50 points, and Airlixir +2 gives 2,000 points. It in turn takes a little less than 6,000 points to completely upgrade a piece of gear from Rank 0 to Rank 15, so if you have the mweya plasm or the gil, three Airlixir +2 will be enough to upgrade it to rank 15.

Not sure of the exact amounts for each path but I traded 6 airlixers and I received ATK 8.

Unless it's a single Airlixir type you're using, don't trade an excess of Airlixirs to finish a path, since I've noticed that extra points won't carry over if it's a bunch of Airlixirs vs. just one. Eight Airlixirs is 80 points (an Airlixir is 10) and to get from rank 0 to rank 2 requires 80 points (30 for the first, 50 for the second). What you needed to do was trade 3 in for the first rank up, and then 5 for the second, rather than 8 all at once.

Ok I am getting the hang of this now and upgrading slowly, currently at rank 6.

One question about the Aphotic Kukri if I can please, the +162 to dagger skill and parrying skill (my dagger skill and my parrying skill are both obviously capped) but when I main hand the Aphotic kukri I don't see my dagger skill number increase, it is at 432 skill (love torque, +2 AF3 pants and full merits) but my parrying skill displays as 568, I am a DNC.
#15 Sep 08 2013 at 4:05 PM Rating: Excellent
The weapon skill doesn't show in the skill stats because it's not like how Love Torque and other, older +skill stats work. It only affects the hand that it's being held in, not both hands, and if it were shown in the skill stats section of your menu, then it'd end up reflecting the stats of both the main hand and the offhand +skill. As I mentioned in post #9, only +skill on the mainhand weapon affects the mainhand, and only +skill on the offhand weapon affects the offhand, but because of this, neither the +weapon stats from the mainhand or the offhand would show on the menu.

Conversely, because Parrying is a defensive skill and only factors in the main hand weapon, they can have that stat show up in the menu just fine.

Yes sorry I should have said that when I tested the aphotic kukri as my main hand weapon with no other dagger or weapon in the off hand I still didn't see the +skill in my overall dagger skill window.

I was confused how a weapon could say +xxx dagger skill and yet that +xxx dagger skill not show up on top of my already existing dagger skill number.

Is the same true if 2 x aphotic kukris are wielded or does it remain a 'hidden' stat, if you like.

I will test with a shield off handed and see if that makes any difference, however i guess it wont.

It remains a hidden stat even if both weapons are the same.
