Maat: Strategy & Testimony Advice?Follow

{Hello!} Some of you know that I've been posting on this forum for over a year now; others have either teamed up with or debated against me in various discussions. At the moment, I'm looking to all of my fellow 70+ MNKs for a little advice on how to off the old man.

To date, I have fought Maat two times. Once, I fought him at 69; the second time, I was 70. Here's the equipment I used:

Head: Temple Crown (for {Chi Blast}), Tiger Mask, Carapace Helm (when in red HP)
Neck: Spike Necklace, Medieval Collar (when in red HP)
Earrings: Evasive Earrings
Rings: Phalanx Rings (tried w/Chrysoberyl first time)
Body: Temple Cyclas
Hands: Temple Gloves (for {Chi Blast}), Carapace Gauntlets (when in red HP)
Back: Amemit Mantle +1
Waist: Warrior's Belt +1
Legs: Temple Hose
Feet: Temple Gaiters

In the first battle, I only used Hi-Potions, and lost miserably. In the second, I used an Opo-Opo Necklace, Sleep Potions, a Blink Band, and a Vile Elixer, in conjunction with more Hi-Potions. The battle basically went like this:

Lock on, engage. Activate {Focus}, {Dodge}, {Hundred Fists}, run at Maat. {Chi Blast}. {Raging Fists}. Watch and get ready to use potions. Use potions/elixer when necessary. Once TP is up again, {Raging Fists}. Wait. Use potions. {Raging Fists}.

Die.

I don't think I'm doing anything wrong, here, so I guess it's just a stroke of bad luck. Nonetheless, any advice is welcome.

On top of that, here's something else: What's the best place for farming MNK Testimonies? To provide an example, RDM Testimonies drop like candy in {sky}. I've been farming my MNK Testimonies in {Davoi}, and they usually take all day, even with a THF with TH2.

Has anyone had good luck with MNK Testimonies in {Sea Serpent Grotto}, {Upper Delkfutt's Tower}, or {Castle Oztroja}? I'd love to know.

Thanks in advance. ^^

I have always gotten testimony's at Castle Oztroja. Yagudo Flagellant's drop them and those guys aren't too difficult. If you have a healer with you, you should be fine.

As far as a strat on Maat. You can try mine that is listed in my "Life as a Taru Monk" thread. It seems to have worked for a lot of people, not just me.

Good luck to you. ^^

I just read it, and your strategy was essentially identical to mine. The gear setup was slightly different, but that was all. I guess all I can do is try again. ^^;

Well, tonight, I learned one thing: Don't go into {Sea Serpent Grotto} expecting to get a {Monk's Testimony}, because there's only one Shore Sahagin there you can actually get to.

I'm off to {Castle Oztroja} tomorrow.

Upper Delkfutt Tower is not bad for MNK and RDM.

We got MNK first in about 35 mins so I warped back and had a crack. No dice ><
So ran back, took elevator (about 5 min trip from jeuno) party still hadnt got RDM test yet. About 15 mins later RDM test drops. About 20 after that I got another test.

Still waiting for a chance to go back for maat. I just wish I knew what was going wrong.

Good to know. Instead of {Castle Oztroja}, I'll try Delkfutt's out. It's convenient, since it's right by {Jeuno}. If it turns out to be a great place in terms of {Monk's Testimony} drop rates for me, too, I'll post here to verify it.

This is what I did, and i didn't have to use a Vile Elixer +1 or my Icerus (SP?) Wing.
-----Use Food----
Equip Opo-opo necklace and rest to 100% tp
go up to Maat
Boost 11 times
Engage Maat with your back to him
2hr with Hundred Fists
Chi Blast
Turn around and weapon skill
By the time he 2hr's you should have 100% tp again. When he 2hr's, smack him up with Raging Fists again.

If he doesn't give up by now, use your icarus Wing and/or potion. But you probably shouldn't have to.

This is what I did, but if you don't trust it then check Mystery Tour. My strat is the same as that strat basically.

I recommend using your highest dmg h2h. Sleep to 100% tp, boost up 10-11 times, activate dodge = focus + 100 fists while right next to him with your back turned.

Once you pop off chi blast after using 100 fists dodge focus etc... use dragon kick right off the bat. Dont bother boosting, wastes time. I found my DKs did consistantly more then my raging fists did to him.

Then as soon as tp gets to 100% again pop off another DK followed by an icarus wing + DK. He should be dead by then without having to use chakra or vile elixir(but good to have macroed just in case).

Also a Persikos au lait cant hurt to drink as you start. I used a SH and dodge earrings along with sniper rings i believe. He actualy missed a decent # of hits.

OK Finally won :D :D

Macros are the key. I cannot emphasise that enough (after finally realising this myself).

I had everything macrod - so no losing 1 second here or 2 seconds there. He gave up after 3rd WS. Dragon Kick did nice 400+ damage as did Chi Blast (485 compared ot 350 I normally got).

Iceday - paralysis kicked in once (shivas claws on iceday) which really helped. Right when I was using I wing and 3rd Dragon Kick, which gave me time. although I left battlefield with 892/1783.

I also unequipped everything before entering - but dont know if it helped. He appeared really easy this time.

edit : some pics of log.

Unequipping everything is the one thing I forgot to do, and I forgot to do it twice. I think this rumor could have some weight to it. The other members of my static PT did that as well, and they all have won. (The RDM has not, actually, but I do not think she went in naked.) I will definitely do that next time.

I don't have {Shiva's Claws}, else I would try to use them. I'm wary, however, about using {Dragon Kick} instead of {Raging Fists}. I understand Slyde's words about how a {Dragon Kick} at the beginning will give Maat less TP, and I may do that, but I consider {Raging Fists} more reliable overall when it comes to DMG. I've also not had an ACC problem, so I think I'll use that WS instead.

As far as what the others have said... well, that's basically what I did, too. I have {Sparatan Cesti}, so a high DMG weapon isn't an issue. I used {Sleep Potion}s, the {Opo-opo Necklace}, and the whole lot. I simply lost twice, nonetheless. It must really be a stroke of bad luck, considering that others have won with the same exact strategy, and without difficulty.

Macros are something I've used since the beginning, so I understand how very vital they are. I'll keep using them. As for not using {Hundred Fists} at the beginning, I know that a lot of people suggest it... but after failing twice, I don't think I'll do that again. I see that you didn't do it right away, either. Those moments that it takes to run up to Maat and get into position are precious 2HR seconds lost. Next time, I'll wait.

Time to get another testimony...

Ok here's what I did. I beat Maat on my fourth try at level 69. He gave up on me before he even used Hundred Fists, and I'm Hume!

I entered the BC naked (cuz you never know)
Equip myself:
Spartan Cesti
Blink Band
Opo Neck
Dodge Earrings
STR rings
Brown Belt
Full AF (if you're lvl 70 - use Dune Boots if ya got 'em).
Amemit Mantle

Sleep to 100%
Activate Blink Band
Start Boost cycle
After 4 boosts, drink persikos au lait
After 8 boosts, use focus and dodge - begin moving towards BC.. Remember that Maat wont attack you until you attack him.
After 10 boosts, hit Hundred Fists + Chi Blast Maat
Use Macro to equip Spike Necklace
Dragon Kick right away
Icarus Wing
Raging Fists
Chakra
Vile Elixir if needed
Maat should be dead, if not, use Raging Fists as soon as 100% TP.

If I remember correctly, Maat gave up just as Hundred Fists was wearing off. I had about 700 HP left.

I cannot stress enough.... MACROS MACROS MACROS.. Macro EVERYTHING!

I got all of my Testimonies in Davoi, but I found out while farming for WHM tests in Sea Serpent Grotto that it drops there pretty frequently, its just a pain to get to. In all my time camping Pallas in Delkfutt's, I've never ever seen a MNK test drop there.

I think your strategy looks fine. There is a bit of luck involved: my first try Maat got off a few Counters and 4-5 Crits, while my second go (and a win) he didn't counter me once and got one crit.

Only thing I'd recomend is don't use anything except Vile Elixr. Potions are way too slow...if you want super healing bring a regular and a +1. Those two cures, plus Chakra, is a ton a HP back. Blink Bands before the start are a nice way to absorb some damage as well.

I got my tests in Davoi. Tried for hours in the Tower with no luck, no drops in Castle O either. It's pretty fickle though, go wherever you find a coffet PT that needs some damage or wherever your friends want to abuse things.

Good luck!

Congrats! And thanks especially for posting your logs. From what I can see, my attempt was extremely close. I will try again on Friday, after getting another testimony.

It's coincidental that you posted pictures of your triumph, because I planned to do the same thing. I also see that you use Effen's {Boost} macro suggestion. ^^ For me, I just made a custom set of macros for the Maat fight... but wound up not even having to use them all.

Here's how mine went:

PICTURE 1: [ http://img107.echo.cx/img107/1815/ffxikohanmaat010tj.jpg ] My static PT had something going; they'd all stay in PT when they went to fight Maat. Although everyone would remain silent, we considered it the luck of good friends, just to be in a PT with them. When I stepped into the BCNM, I had a {Vile Elixer}, {Vile Elixer +1}, some {Hi-Potion +3}s, an {Icarus Wing}, and other items you'll see me using.

PICTURE 2: [ http://img107.echo.cx/img107/6484/ffxikohanmaat020ct.jpg ] Upon realizing that I forgot to buy more {Sleep Potion}s, I was only able to {Sleep} to 50% TP, but I thought it wouldn't matter. In the end, it didn't. I was going to fire up {Hundred Fists} later in the battle, but I eventually decided to use it at the beginning again.

PICTURE 3: [ http://img107.echo.cx/img107/4712/ffxikohanmaat039dk.jpg ] I {Chi Blast}ed him while running in. It wasn't a fully {Boost}ed {Chi Blast}, but I didn't care. I was riled, and somewhat cocky, for I was absolutely determined to win on my third try. I quickly got enough TP to do {Raging Fists}, forgetting to try {Dragon Kick} instead.

PICTURE 4: [ http://img107.echo.cx/img107/1276/ffxikohanmaat040mb.jpg ] {Raging Fists} hit him for a very healthy amount. I was satisfied. It triggered {Hundred Fists}, but I didn't care; I had my elixers ready and waiting, along with {Icarus Wing}s. My 2HR was still going strong, too.

PICTURE 5: [ http://img107.echo.cx/img107/5250/ffxikohanmaat059lp.jpg ] Another good {Raging Fists}, and he was down for the count. Gave up right then and there. I subbed BLM, so I got a free {Instant Warp} scroll, and a big boost to my {Monk} pride. My PT was waiting to hear my cry of triumph -- censored for the kiddies, 'cause you know thousands of them read this board -- and boy, was I happy.

It's done. Maat's defeated. Take that, you old buzzard!

Oh, and a few more notes: I did go in naked. In fact, I unequipped everything before talking to Maat at all. I also didn't use Evasive Earrings this time; I used my Coral Earrings. Aside from that, the equipment I brought with me was the same as it was in my initial posting.
