Some people say that the level grind from 50-60 is a MNK's test of mettle. Others believe that it's fighting Maat at 70. Others still think it's all the farming, waiting, and struggling that you have to do. For me, it's none of those things.

It's farming the eyes for the {Optical Hat}.

To my surprise, searching Allakhazam via Google doesn't come up with any matches about these eyes being nigh impossible to obtain. Surely, Google doesn't have every single post archived, but I was nonetheless surprised at that. I have been farming {Sea Serpent Grotto} for a week now, and have not had a single eye drop. Not one. Nothing.

I'm seriously losing it. I'm thinking of quitting the whole damn game. This is insanity. I thought coffer keys were bad, but they're nothing, absolutely nothing in comparison to this. Usually, I'm a patient, understanding person, but this is unbearable and ridiculous. If this is a sign of things to come, or if I'm going to get flak for not having an {Optical Hat}, I quit. Seriously.

I'm not going to buy the Goddamn eyes after I've farmed and died several times trying to get them.

Has anyone suffered like this? Anyone? Or did you all buy your eyes and/or clusters?

I hate to sound like a quitter, but this is really pissing me off. So much that, even though I'm almost 71 and will have {Asuran Fists} soon, I don't give a damn anymore. This is unfair and it makes me want to punch something, but not in-game; that's not enough.

I wish I had a f*cking punching bag.

So you're going to quit because you can't get an O-hat? I don't understand this O-hat obsession.

Everyone wants everything in this game to be handed to them on a silver platter.

You won't get flak for not having an O-hat.

If you think getting eyes is hard, good luck finding a crafter and then getting a group to go do this. So you know, all failures on the synth are critical.

According to most guides and from personnal experiance, the eyes are relativly common drops, most readups ive read say 1 per hr or something along them lines, Im only lvl 60 and I have 2 of the eyes just by chance, so have a few aorund my lvl from my LS's, I dont think this is {impossible to gauge} I just think your having terrible luck, really terrible.
sorry man but keep it up.

I've been doing this little adventure this week. A thief from my linkshell and I are both about halfway through level 69. So far we have managed to get 3 of the eyes each. We are finding that the two eyes we need from each mob type will drop in a couple of hours. We have managed to get both eyes from SSG and the one from KRT. We tried for the Ifrit's Cauldron one last night but the place was so packed we couldn't get enough Dodomeki to fight.

Basically we just grab whichever mages in our linkshell are bored or want to be helpful and spend a couple of hours each night camping one area. Our linkshell has an Alchemist high enough to do the synth for us, so that won't be a problem. The problem for us will be getting the group together to fight the NM at the end.

I would prefer to actually get all the eyes myself and get a group together for the fight. Rather than buy the eyes and rent a bunch of mercenaries for the fight.

I haven't gotten any flak over my un-Hattedness either. I can understand your frustration thought, I was pretty pissed myself for a while about it. I've since let that angst go though....I've met too many DD or Ninja that didn't get theirs until level 75. I'll get it when I get it.

As for the drops, I got two farming, two as gifts from friends, and one for ~100k in a bazaar. I consider myself rather lucky.

I didn't have any problems getting my eyes. Most dropped within 30minutes of camping them with the exception of the KRT eye. That one took a good hour and a half. Good luck to you either way though. The O. Hat is an amazing piece, but nothing to stress over at your level considering most people don't get it until level 75 anyways.

Sounds like the OP's just having a lot of bad luck. :/ Sorry to hear it has been such a struggle for you.

I've farmed up 4 out of 5 eyes now (the Ifrit's Cauldron eye dropped three times while we were farming it, but I lost all the lots). In KRT, we farmed the eyes for a little under two hours (this was our one trip without a THF). They were dropping so often in KRT that all four members of the party (including the 42 RDM) were able to get an eye. Ifrit's was going well while the THF was there (I think two eyes dropped in an hour and a half), but after that we only got one more in the next hour. SSG wasn't too bad either. In fact, my hunting party was joking about farming the eyes to make gil since they were dropping so often.

That's the thing with farming: sometimes you get lucky, sometimes you don't. All you can do is keep trying and hoping. Taking a long a THF with TH2 might help, but it isn't required. Good luck to you. ^^

I had bad luck getting mine too. Earthen dropped quickly enough--two in about an hour--and wooden wasn't too bad either, but burning took me about three hours for one, damp took about five hours for two, and golden took about two hours for one. I soloed burning and golden, since my friend already had those two, and duoed the rest.

I have one eye... Earthen, I think.
I bought it for 60k.

Considering the fact that I'm 74 now, it looks like I won't be getting the hat until I'm level 82.

I already have a level 100 alchemist ready to do it, and I know about the critical failure. If that happens to me, I think I will curl up in a corner and cry.

Sorry if my original post seemed exceptionally negative, but man, this really got to me. I simply don't understand it. Am I the only one who's had this much poor luck with drops? I've heard a few people post in this thread, and say that they can get eyes within a few hours... that's amazing. I wish I had that luck. I've been going on five hour runs without getting one eye for anybody.

    That's with TH2, too.

Yeah, that's what I think I might wind up doing, too. I'll have a better chance of soloing the bastards then, if I can't get PTs together.

I just am buying them honestly.

I have camped the mobs but I would rather hang around farming or something and skilling up guard than killing them.

come 69 Im selling my Spartan once I get a avengers drop, with the money Im buying a already synthed one which is about 1mil on my server (man do the alch guild members clean house with that synth) once i get it i know a few groups who go on runs regularly who are well known for being capable and will go with them. They are all people i have known through the game and trust them all and have all said they would help with a run but only with people who are reliable and wont panic.

Damn, sorry to hear it's been so rough for you. My static and I are in the process of farming them eyes and have someone in mind for the synth. The earthen eyes (Sea Serpent Grotto) took us about 3-4 hours to get 4 eyes (me the MNK, DRK, RDM and PLD while the WHM is working on his Opo-Opo Crown).

For the burning eye (King Ramperre's Tomb), it took us about 3.5 hours to get 3. We were just going for 2 eyes since the drop was ungodly slow as hell, but right before we were about to call it, the PLD got hers.

I don't know how the others are going to be yet, but I hear the golden eye is the slowest drop.

Anyway, good luck to you man! I wish I had the cash to just up and buy one (not that I would, but having the money would be nice), but doing this with my LS/static and skilling up is much fun. ^^b

Honestly man just keep it at it, I'm not that level but I can say its not worth giving up over.

Getting an OPtical hat is one of the greatest moments in a meele's career. An OPtical hat is privelge not a right, so don't expect it. IF and when you do get a cluster, expect to wait to get you hat. It's always good to have a cluster incase an alliance is formed.

I don't suggest you mooch into a random alliance because problems can occur. It's best to go with trusted people and people who are willing to stay for multiple-runs.

With the recent patch, the ??? automatically spawns after Hakutaku is killed so this shaves off 15min per hat. We did 6 hats in 2hrs. and decided to stop. It's harsh that a few people didnt get there hat, but we made the tough choice of organizing another raid becaue Hakutakku is a marathon of a NM.

Oh, and for people who missed my OPtical Hat Guide:

The ultimate guide to obtaining the Optical hat.

Let's get started, first off the stats for this hat. Accuracy +10 Ranged Accuracy +10 Evasion +10
Level 70 [Head] All Races Rare/Ex

This fugly looking hat is sought after by all melee jobs. Obtaining this hat is by far an easy task. First off, you will need to hunt down 5 different Hakutaku eyes, which are located throughout the world. The eyes are not 100% drops and eyes range from level 50 to 75. These eyes cannot be purchased from AH, but can be purchased via bazaars ranging in price from 9K to 200K depending on the eye. Once all the eyes have been obtained you will need to fight a high level alchemist to craft them into a Hakutaku Eye Cluster. This cluster sells for 800K-1.5 mil sometimes in bazaars. With this cluster, you will now be able to spawn Hakutaku in Den of Rancor. Once you kill this NM, optical hat will be yours. The hat is a 100% drop.

The mobs that drop the eyes are black mage type mobs. They will cast spikes, -ga spells and ancient spells. There level range is 50-75 and are can be taken down with a decent PT setup. The drop rate for the eyes isn't too bad, an average of 1 eye per hr.

Golden Hakutaku Eye - This is located in Sea Serpent Grotto behind the Ornament Door. To get to the door, hug the left wall once you get into SSG. To get behind this door, you will need a Sahagin Key. This key can only be obtained via a separate quest in Norg. For details on the quest, http://www.koolaid-ffxi.org/linkshell/space/The+Sahagin+Key The key can only be used once, so you will need to get a key each time. the Golden Hakutaku Eye is dropped off Mindgazer. It's a level 65-70 mob and is surrounded by Sahagin's which link very easily. If you don't feel like completing the quest, it is possible to pull 1 Mindgazer. If you continue to hug the left wall, past the ornament door. You will reach a fishing pond. If you look up, 1 mindgazer spawns on the cliff. You can pull it down and kill, the spawn cycle is 15min.

Earthern Hakutaku Eye - This eye is also located in SSG, except its behind the mythil coin door. To get to this door, again, hug the left wall once entering SSG and you will reach a fishing pond. Examine the door to the north and trade it a mythril coin and the door should open. Follow the path and you will see 6 blubber eye spawns. The level 50-55 blubbereye is the easiest of all the eyes to kill. You just need to clear the area of crabs and sahagin.

Burning Hakutaku Eye - This is located in King Rampere's Tomb. To get to this location you will need to examine a ??? and be taken underground. You will need to sneak yourself before heading down because bat's will agro. This is a pretty easy eye to get to and the camp is safe. All the Thousand Eyes are located in one spot, so just camp in front and pick them off slowly as they spawn.

Damp Hakutaku Eye - This eye is located in Ifrit's Cauldron and is surrounded by bombs, bats and scorpions. Dodomeki is level 63-67 and isnt too difficult to get to. Ifriti's Cauldron have bombs that agro to magic and they have a huge range. I suggest your party bring invis powders and silent oils.

Wooden Hakutaku eye - The most difficult and toughest eye to get. Dropped off Million Eyes in Den of Rancor, this mob spawns at the same location where you fight Hakutaku for your optical hat. Million Eyes are level 73-75 [decent challenge to a lvl 75] and is surrounded by tonberries. To get to Den of Rancor, you will need to head through Temple of Uggalepih. Enter the Temple and hug the right wall. This will zone you back to the jungle. Follow the corner and go back into the Temple. Head south where you will find a door which is protected by Temple Guardian. He's a level 75 Doll, which isnt too hard, just make sure you stun when it does Melt Down.

If nobody already has the key item ?Paintbrush of Souls,? you will have to get one. Luckily, it?s not too difficult to acquire, and you only need one for your entire party. The entrance level of the Temple of Uggalepih is filled with three kinds of tonberries: Cutters, Slashers and Harriers. The Tonberry Cutters periodically drop Uggalepih Keys, which is what you need. These are NOT coffer or chest keys, just ?Uggalepih Keys.? Once you acquire one, you?ll want to go to F-7 of the first map. To get there from the front door of the temple, take a right (don?t go through the gate) at the bottom of the first stairs, follow that hallway through a couple of rooms until you have to turn north or south. Head north and follow that path straight until you come into a room with painting frames. Incidentally, you can complete the ?A Question of Taste? quest in this room if you have reached that point in the quest.

In the NW corner of this room (down a little hallway), there is a locked door which needs an Uggalepih key (which, incidentally, will use up the key). Once in, you?ll find a room with a locked box and three books. Examine all the books until one drops a key. Use this key on the locked box and you will acquire the key item ?Paintbrush of Souls.? Do not leave the room without acquiring the Paintbrush or you will have to get another key and do it again. Again, only one person needs the paintbrush. It is a permanent key item, however, and you will need it every time you ever need to go through the door to the Den of Rancor. (In short, it?s not a bad thing to have).

Ok, you know how have all 5 eyes. What now? You will need to find an alchemist with level 86 MINIMUM to make the cluster. The recipe is:
Burning, Damp, Earthen, Golden, Wooden, Fiend Blood and a Light crystal. Be warned, a critical fail will cause you to loose all the eyes. Even with 100+3 alchemy there is still a 2-3% chance of failing. It it possible to HQ the cluster, but it's only animation and no special effects will be given to the NM or the hat.

Alright, you now have your cluster. Now bazaar it for 99 trillion gil and wait for an alliance to form. This part could take days, weeks or even months because Hakutaku IS NOT a cake walk. I don't recommonend you go with random people because problems will occur. It's best if you go with LS members. Hakutaku is a hecteye type mob and its very similiar to the mobs you have been killing eyes for. Except the NM itself has crazy evasion and defense. Head to Den of Rancor and head to H-8. You will see a ??? and you will trade your cluster and the NM will pop. K, now the actual battle.

Get everyone to gather in Jeuno and make sure all meele have sneak and invisible powders. I cannot stress this enough because it saves a lot of problems. I suggest you get a minimum of 2 Ninja tanks, 2-3 stunners, 2-3 mages and a few meele with /thf to keep hate on the ninja tanks. Pld cannot tank this thing, it will take too much damage from spells and AM and its a waste of MP for mages to heal. A stun order must be setup, a single -ga spell can take out tank and hit an alliance hard. Make sure you stun at the start because NM has been known to cast a -ga as soon as its spawned. Mages must be prepared to cast paralyna on tanks because he loves to spam it. Ninja tanks should be tanking it backwards, this prevents paralyze. Mnk's should not be meeling, they should be Chi-Blasting. Every other meele should be SATING onto 2 ninja tanks. Meele's should be attacking the mob from the side or behind, anyone facing the front of Haku will get paralyzed.

The NM area has 2-3 million eyes and 2 tonberries that spawn in the area. Have a separate tank and 2 meele to deal with addons. All meele should bring sushi. Or if your really lucky, bring a high level bst to move the addson for you. This fight can go wrong in a second. So stay calm and be prepared for anything. If something does go wrong, kite Hakutaku until alliance is ready to continue. Do not call for help on links because that will cause NM to go call for help mode as well. If alliance dies, Hakutaku will despawn and the cluster will be lost. Once Hakutaku is dead, Optical Hat will be yours. It's a 100% drop. Thank God. Get the alliance to heal up because the ??? is now an instant spawn.

Well that's about it, enjoy the hat and be the envy of all the noobs. If you get your cluster and cant seem to find an alliance, don't worry about it. You'll get your optical hat and when you do, you'll be screaming your head off. Good luck.

Thank you for the guide. It's very useful. ^^

To tell you all the truth, I broke down and bought one of the eyes. Specifically, it was the earthen, which was the one I've been farming for days to no avail. I also got the burning eye in KRT.

I may go farming instead, and buy them. I've spent over a week farming eyes, and have only had one drop. I may as well be making Gil with that time. Besides, if someone had the patience to wait for those drops, I say, more power to them.

Instead of starting a new thread, I thought I'd post again in this one, since I created it originally. Not only does it contain very useful information, but you can see my exasperation in my original post, and compare it to this:

I finally got my Optical Hat today!

Camping the eyes never improved. Those of you who farmed all of the drops successfully and within a limited period of time, know that I envy you. ^^ Instead of continuing to fight for the eyes that way, I farmed and quested, and bought those that I didn't already have.

It wasn't all uphill from there, however. While my friend's 100+3 {Alchemy} bud did craft the eye cluster for me, I had two runs that didn't go as planned. Well, technically, I only had one... and I'll explain.

Out of kindness, that alchemist told me that some friends of his were going on a Hakutaku run, and he invited me. Unfortunately, I'm not in an HNMLS at the moment, and I've been playing at an extremely slow pace, so I have few connections. I jumped at the chance.

I was ultimately told that they did not have time for me, and I did not go with them.

That was very discouraging, and some of my friends were offended that I was invited to something and then rejected, but at least I didn't lose my cluster over it. The only problem was, I didn't know how I'd possibly get to go on another run. I could try forming an alliance, but those can be hectic, especially if no one going has ever fought it before.

Then one day, as I was returning from helping a LS friend with Genkai, I saw a {/shout} for a Hakutaku run. Shocked and amazed, I sent them a {/tell} immediately. They said that they had too many melee, and that I couldn't go. Once again, I was disheartened... but I didn't want to give up. The other melee in my static PT were getting theirs, and I didn't have mine. Plus, I was determined to get it before 75; I wanted to level in it.

I sent them another {/tell}, asking that they consider me in case people left. I also promised to make it worth their while, somehow, if only they would consider me. Long story short: I was suddenly told several hours later that I was needed.

Was that the night when I got my hat, though? Well, we'll get to that. I went along, and there were still a fair amount of others, and we were using {/random} to determine who went when. I lost the first... then the second... then the third... and then, I won the fourth. By this time, the group had fought Hakutaku eight times.

People grew tired as I watched my clock hit 4:00AM, then they left, and the group disbanded. I did not fight.

Saddened, I stuck around as the people dwindled away. While running to {Rabao} after an Altepa teleport, the person who formed the alliance stated that they were going to do another run ASAP. It turned out that one of their close, longtime friends had been there the whole time, and did not get to fight either. After some chatting, they decided to go on Sunday night; that was my usual static EXP night.

After being invited along, my {wife} and static PT's {White Mage} said that we could cancel EXPing on that day, if we had to. I ultimately spoke to my static PT about it... and they all volunteered to go with me. Our SAM and THF already had their hats, and wanted me to get mine.

We went again tonight. I was the first one up. I was nervous, especially since a lot of the people in the group had never fought Hakutaku before. It was a long battle... but we won.

    I now own an {Optical Hat}. ^^

Congratulations!!! You now get to look ugly 24/7~!

SIDE NOTE: Foxthesly... you may have noticed there is no longer an LS line to my sig. I have left Assassin for personal reasons (unresolvable conflict with a leader), however I can still get Jerivalu to craft your clusters for you. His going rate is still 35k per synth. Don't be surprised if he asks you to wait for a good day/moon, he hates to lose eyes for people.

I'm happy that you got your hat. I'm gonna be having to do this soon, so I can now say I envy you for being done with it.

    Congrats
i have my hat rdy and waiting for 70 cuz my thf is 75 and ive had it for quite a while, eye farming as a thf, for me as most of my server, eyes are pretty common except in ifrits and den is hard to duo/solo somtimes.

donno about you guys, but i only plan on using my hat for tanking/soloing and for XP shura head, as i seem to have more than enough accuracy already, and evasion isnt that useful when im not taking hits for xp- i would much rather have the smaller amount of acc on shura head and the +str for my monk over 10 acc and 10 evasion.
Just how i see it tho, everyone is different, and this of course will happen whenever i get the money to get the divine log >< needed - i need at least 4 divine logs for everything i want Orz.

Edit: Orz i forgot about KRT parties, i sadly just hit 66 mnk and b4 that ive never been in a bones pt and still have not experienced one but i would assume Ohate would be useful there cuz everyone gets hit at som point i'd guess, but still, mnk isnt about one peice of good armor, no job is, i <3 gear swaps, and hate them too.

Lollercoaster. Yes, yes, I do. I've both anticipated and feared this moment. Having known about the {Optical Hat} since I was in my late 30's as a MNK, I wasn't looking forward to it because of its appearance. Now that I have it, to be honest, I don't mind so much. A lot of that fear wore off while I was gathering the eyes, and then fighting the damned Hakutaku... and now that I have it, I'm just glad. ^^

you think you had it bad...

(forgive me for using this as an excuse to share a story or two)

my friend has been so excited to get the o-hat that he refuses to level past 70 without it. so.. he put together an alliance. traded his cluster. alliance fails. sure, he's pissed. but he trades some of his good gear to someone selling a cluster, and a week later goes again. everyone says, "don't go first this time!" but he is too eager. fight goes well, until last sliver of the life on the monstery thing, and alliance wiped out, again. he quit.

my stupid story? farming the eyes with my former static. the freakin' bard is lotting on the eyes... gets the Ifrit's Cauldron eye before me (we go every night for 4 nights). nobody else in the party sees anything wrong with that... then i had to leave static due to a death in the family, and... 2 months later some nice friends went out to farm the eye with me. finally have my cluster. waiting on an alliance.. (i'm not going first)

but congrats on the o-hat ^^ (really.. is it worth all the fuss?)

I definitely understand the theme of your original post, Raz. Most of the hecteyes that drop the eyes are easily soloable as a BST66, so I've been trying to get my eyes that way (note, with WHM subbed, not THF). I originally went to King Ranperre's Tomb, solo'd about 40 of those eyes, no drops. Got frustrated, since if you've ever farmed eyes there, 40 kills is over a couple of hours of work.

I decided I wouldn't go again without TH2, so I recruited the THF in my static party to come duo eyes with me. He wants a hat too, so our plan is to go get 2 of each eye. We went to KRT first again, and got two eyes in 10 kills. Just slightly better. Thinking it might not be so bad, we went to Ifrit's Cauldron next. Unfortunately, we only know where 2 Dodomeki spawn in Ifrit's, and there's no pets around that area. I had to drag an Old Opo-Opo all the way from the entrance and let it heal after every fight to use as a pet. We spent a few hours there, killing the same two Dodomeki over and over again, and didn't get any eyes. That discouraged me a little, and I'm not really looking forward to trying for that eye again. If anyone can give me some advice on where more Dodomeki spawn, that'd probably make things a lot less frustrating.

After a few hours in Ifrit's, my THF partner had to leave, but I dragged another THF friend along to Sea Serpent Grotto to try killing the Blubber Eyes. Again, easy to kill, but we spent a couple hours running between all the spawns, killing constantly, and only got one eye. Unfortunately, I lost the lot, and then he had to leave as well shortly after. I spent another two hours or so soloing the eyes, but again, no drop in a ton of kills.

So I'm definitely understanding your frustration, and I have to admit that I've been strongly considering just buying a cluster. The going rate is 750k on Sylph, which isn't bad. I have enough gil to buy one, I'd just prefer to spend it on other things. I didn't expect that farming the eyes would be this much trouble, since most of the things I read said that one would drop at least every hour. I can't even imagine how upset I'd be if I finally managed to collect all the eyes, went to get it synthed, and had a fail. The amount of time wasted for that would be huge. The 750k is looking pretty good, and I'm still not sure which way I'm going to end up getting my hat.

Yeah, that's what's so painful about it. You have to pay time or Gil to gather the eyes, but then you have to get them crafted... and if it fails, oh, could you imagine the pain? Buying a pre-crafted cluster is a sure bet, but it's hard to get a good deal. 750,000G sounds like a great one to me, however, because they usually go for 1,000,000G or more on Pandemonium. (There are exceptions, but that's what I see most of the time.)

Then, if you lose the Hakutaku fight, it's all for nothing...

Here's a {/cheer} for you, and I hope you have good luck when you finally do it. Someone who fought two battles after me lost their cluster because the NINs died and someone called for {/help}... that was horrible to see.

And, on a random note: 1,000th post! Whoo!

    Big congratulations, Raz.

This hat was also a trial for me. I'll admit, rather than farm the clusters, I spent weeks checking bazaars. Most I bought for the 60k-100k range. Then my LS was good enough to help me get burning eye in KRT.

All was going well, I had an excellent crafter in mind who would synth the cluster. I got ahold of him, gave him the necessary items. He started the synth and...... it failed.

I lost everything. Tons of comfort emotes. I was pretty upset, logged off for the night and considered quitting the game. In hindsight it seems silly, but it felt like the world was coming to an end at the time.

I started farming again with a vengeance. Paid too much for the eyes a second time (100k each), and farmed the burning eye again. This time, I waited until lightsday and the synth was a success.

But like Vagus says, this was only half the battle. I waited forever until I was invited by a friend to an alliance. Great group, we had 2 ninja tanks, lots of stunners AND a separate party with a high level bst to handle the adds.

We got 5 hats, mine was the second one. It really was a joy to get, made it all seem worth it.

And previously, I hated its looks, thought it made people look like scarecrows. But I've grown to like mine. I like the way it hides the upper part of my face. I look like one of the villains from Big Trouble in Little China.

The hat is definitely a privilege to have and I feel privileged.

If you were talking to me, thank you for not only failing to read the thread -- I have my {Optical Hat} now -- but for also being an unsympathetic turd.

If you weren't talking to me, you're still an unsympathetic turd.

To a story like that, I have to say, {/comfort} and {Congratulations!} ^^ I was very afraid of the synth failing, and when I saw it succeed, I was definitely relieved. That was one of the worst nail-biting moments of my whole FFXI career. If it failed, I would've felt exactly as you did. After all that work, to see it all go up in smoke would be devastating.

I hope that this thread helps to encourage people who are still going for their {Optical Hat}s. You can either get lucky and have an easy time, or it can be a struggle that you'll never forget... but don't give up -- many of us thought of it, and almost did, but pulled through -- and you'll get your hat, too. ^^
