whats the best sam gear to date?Follow

I'm a returning sam and I have some shura top and bottoms and relic sune-ate feet. Right now I would like to know what's the top of the line gear for sams and how hard is it to get. I would still love to get a full relic set but I just don't want to be outdated with gear. I always tried to have the best I can get. Also I have a ushikirimaru great katana.
No offense, Relic gear and Ushi were already outdated :/ For currently high end gear, I'd suggest looking up select peices of the Unkai armor +1/2 set(all but feet/hands are good for meleeing in). +1's are relatively easy to get even without a shell, most NMs are solo/duo/trio friendly. Till then, check other threads for previous high end AH gear(haub, fuma, dusk, turban) and use those till you can upgrade.
For Gkatana, buy a hagun first(has always been better than ushi), then work on one of three magian Gkatanas. Keitanotachi +2(TP bonus) is the quickest/easiest upgrade taking around a week even with limited time available. Hiradennotachi +2 is the next step up with Fudo as a WS. the first several trials are easy if not boreing. only real stopper is 30 coins of decay. Highest end would be Masamune. at this point i'm going to assume masa isn't going to be the easiest for you. highly suggest the keito though.

so what about the body set for high level cap. and where can i find the info on where to get this gear at? what about the shura gear is it any good now days.
Use kinematic's spreadsheet.
Only Shura head and maybe legs were ever decent for SAM. Body is worse than Hauby. It seems like you have a ton of catching up to do, so check here wiki.ffxiclopedia.org. Pretty much all gear you want now comes from Abyssea, and your weapon is a product of Trial of the Magians.
Edit: So we are clear, I'm in no way advocating Shura head or legs. Varangian Helm and Unkai+1/2 Legs (or Hachiryu Haidate) are superior pieces for WS.

All right I'm bored so I'll go a little more in depth. Your goal should be to get a 5-hit with 25% haste in gear. You should have a Magian Great Katana as well.
Atmas/Lunar Abyssites: Get these first. Atmas are key item buffs obtained from NMs in Abyssea. Atmas only work in Abyssea, and you can equip up to 3 if you have 3 Lunar Abyssites. These make a bigger difference than any piece of gear you can get. They give absurdly high bonuses like 50STR 2/tick Regain and 5% Double Attack in one Atma.
Unkai set: you get the base pieces in Abyssea. You upgrade to +1 with seals from NMs (10 for body, 8 for other pieces), and +2 with jewels from NMs (9 for body, 6 for other pieces). Each piece requires a different seal and jewel. Neck from NM in Tahronghi (low drop rate unless you trigger blue !!), back from NM in Misareaux (100% drop). There is also an Unkai earring but its not so hot. It isn't hard to get these per se, it will take you some time though.
Varangian Helm, Heafoc Mitts, Ace's Feet, Goading/Bullwhip belt all come from NMs in Abyssea. If you trigger blue weakness on the NMs which drop them, their drop rates become very high, meaning you generally get the drop in 1 or 2 kills. Twilight Head and Body both come from the Shinryu battle field (Abyssea mega boss). They seem to have sort of crappy drop rates, but you can enter the battle field as many times as you have Traverser stones.
Masamune is the top Great Katana now, then probably Hiradennotachi+2 and Keitonotachi+2 (TP Bonus). Amano falls after Masamune, but I don't know of many people bothering with relics these days. Keitonotachi+2 is easy and can be solo'd. Hiradennotachi+2 is a little harder, but can still be done by the casual player. Masamune takes a lot more investment, but it is still much easier to obtain than Amano. You get all of these GKT's via the Trial of the Magians system. You start with a crappy base weapon and do a series of quests such as defeat X mob Y times, or X NM Y times, or perform X WS on Y mob Z times, etc etc. After each quest the weapon upgrades slightly. There are still some decent weapons to be had from NMs in Abyssea, but they are generally weaker than the Magian ones.
I think that is a decent enough summary that if you look on the wiki you can get some direction.

I just got back to the game about 2 weeks ago. Making pretty good progress. I have a few questions though. As I Don't have my masume yet I am still dealing with Y/G/K. As far as ws gear goes what are the best options for the back, waist and neck?
I am thinking Unkai back, element gorget for neck but am mostly concerned about the waist pieces. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

For YGK, I use ftp belt. Theres nothing with 10-15STR on waist so i'll stick with that until I see better or get Fudo.

Some Enhances Zanshin pieces went up in use thanks to the Zanshin update. The back, ace's muffler's if it doesn't break xhit, JSE earring as well for example (if you don't have regain earring).
