After taking a few years off from the game, I got the urge to rejoin. Only thing is that I feel completely overwhelmed by all the new content.
I would really appreciate it if someone could help me get an understanding of what are the top subjob choices for Dragoon now for both solo and exp play. I am level 40 so end game is still a ways off.

Also, Curious if I should be leveling up SAM for endgame as opposed to WAR? I even see some DRG/DNC on my server... I used to use DRG/WAR and DRG/RDM for party and solo play, are these still viable and effective?

Quick guidelines...
drg/war til 60, drg/sam after that.
blu or rdm or whm subs for solo, comes down to personal preference.
Avoid /dnc as a healing wyvern makes it utterly silly to throw away good TP like that.
drg/nin still has its place in a very few select events.

Awesome, thank you guys. Is it pretty important to go ahead and buy Abyssea strictly for the leveling purposes? I see that is where everyone is these days.
Yes, abyssea is the new place for leveling. It goes extremely fast though you need to dedicate some time there before it goes fast. It is also where you get the new gear, though you can by stuff on AH like the perle set.
