Because I'm curious as to how that turned out, Smurv. How long did it take him to get out of jail? Did the GM say anything more? Can they do it anymore now or what? If it's off topic, then I'm sorry. But I have a question for the man who knooooows.

To sickeness: ok could I have a reason why you just cast instead of using your dagger/sword + en-spell? I mean the person that posted said 10 hits with dagger doing 10dmg + 8-12 dmg en-spell will out dmg your 350MB that is only happens once in a battle. Is it cause your a taru? You ever think about soloing own coffer keys for other jobs if the time ever comes? I kno **** well that Lv75RDM/37NIN could solo any coffer key they need for any of there other jobs. I bet they have there dagger capped out so they could use eviceration Lv230 dagger skill 5 hitter. Is it not worth just capping your dagger/sword then become a full on back line person? After I cap my sword/dagger Im really rarely at the front lines cause honestly it makes RDM job much easier for me if I dont have to attack but I feel somewhat obligated to when my dagger/sword is not capped, reason: For what I have stated before to solo my own keys. and bring out the fullest out of RDM.

I agree completely.
I always melee if it's ok with the PT ONLY TO CAP SKILLS after I cap my skills, I usually stop meleeing and full time cast with ebony wand+1.

My issue is that the original poster is saying that anyone who doesn't melee is a coward who had deficient skills. I'm not a coward and I have sword and dagger skills capped but I choose not to melee in PT because I feel the risks (in most cases) are not worth the extra 200 dmg.

Note: I'm lvl 60 so I already have all my AF and have had it since I was 55. ^^

Actually he isn't calling you a coward or saying you're deficient. He is suggesting that not adding in any dmg you can, since you don't pull hate, and since rdm were obviously meant to melee at least some, is efficient. Airspirit has acknowledged that reasons for not meleeing may include being taru, damaging AoE, or not being able to handle melee on top of everything else because it is hard. Cowardice is only one reason, obviously not the reason for everyone. He has also requested you stop arguing about this fact :P It's pretty played out by now.

Actually... It would be quite an achievement if you were to videocapture some of those training sessions and add video examples to you guide. I'd become a premium member for that kind of thing.

Again, cowardice is only one of the reasons. I honestly know red mages that don't melee because they are afraid of getting hurt and no other reason. Not all do it for this reason though. Laziness is much more common, and genuine fear of causing downtime is also common. The most common reason though is the misconception that we can't do it at all ... that is what gets me the most.

I'll try to get fraps on during my next training session for your viewing pleasure ... I don't usually do too many though since I'm busy saving the world, lol.

On my solo guide I have sitting here I am planning on attaching a video showing techniques for soloing DC-T mobs with ease. It'll be a bit though, since I have to buy a copy of fraps first.

And yes, I was tempbanned because my son was suspected of being a bot. It took me six hours to get that mess straightened out but finally after talking with the head of customer service they reversed it. GMs don't mess with me anymore, since there is a flag on my account telling them to leave me alone due to a certain JP GM's incompetence. My children no longer play, though, due to this and I cancelled their account to prevent this from happening again. That issue is completely beside the point, though.

edit: looks like my troll stalker has found me again ... will the loser ever give up?

i'll admit i'm afraid of meleeing(i'm taru + i've been on the receiving end of some nasty AE's when meleeing and when not meleeing so that puts a sour taste in my mouth), plus i find it distracting. If i could melee and not lose focus on doing my job as a rdm i would. But i find it difficult to do that. I tried meleeing from 1-40, i didnt like it. I found it very distracting, but that's my opinion. As i say in my posts, if you can melee and still do your job as a rdm then by all means go ahead; but if you ever start slacking off on your rdm duties because of meleeing.. please step back and dont melee.

does not being able to melee & do all my other rdm abilities at the same time make me a bad rdm? in my eyes no.. in some other peoples eyes yes.. i guess. Do i really care? nope.

only one word...awesome!

And regards to nuking... when blackmages are rare...I find that 2 redmages in a party can do pretty decent nukes especially on these terror pugils and robber crabs...

with morion earrings and wisdom ring +1 plus a dozen other int+ equipments...at lv.59 my blizzard II was doing around 297, while blackmage was doing around 320. 30 damages less, but pretty impressive I would say. Having summoner as sub definitely helps, the mage stat boost is incredible.

Does a taru not meleeing make them a bad RDM? Absolutely not. Does another race not meleeing make them a bad RDM? That is very debatable. Unfortunately your incredible MP stores and godly INT/MND come at a dear cost and most will have to accomodate that.

I just had an interesting encounter in Kuftal Tunnel I thought I'd relate ... it goes into the gear/training issue. I was soloing EM Robber Crabs for fun and skill ups (insane parry/shield boosts ... .5 a shot) and was finishing with full health and about 2/3+ of my MPs still intact. While I was doing this a 71 RDM and 52 BLM in a Garuda party came by and watched. When they stopped by I had just buffed in preparation for taking another one and the 71 RDM used a point emote and said in general chat that I would die since the mob was still EP to him. The two of them stood there and watched, and two minutes later I had a dead crab at my feet and another point in dagger, shield, and parry. The red mage sniffed at me (I'm 65) and told his 52 BLM buddy (whom I had been talking to in tells the whole time) that I had just got lucky (neglecting to notice my full health though he couldn't see my 512/638 MPs). He did a quick check, publicly scolded me for wearing stupid melee gear when I was a mage, and told his friend he'd show us how it was done. After about a minute I was beginning to giggle, and after two I was spamming laugh emotes at him ... because he never bothered to level any of his melee skills he couldn't touch it and was reduced to nuking it for damage. Because he didn't have a handle on buffing himself he was taking large amounts of damage as well. Because he was wearing "proper mage attire" he was getting sick amounts of interrupts. After he used his entire MP store he used phalanx/stoneskin, converted, then healed up for round two. The mob was about half dead at this point. At about the 10% mark he must have realized that he didn't have enough MPs to kill it and used stoneskin/escape to save himself leaving the BLM and I absolutely rolling in our seats ... the BLM finished it off with ancient magic just for fun. First, he was using a crimson blade in the fight, I presume for the INT/MP bonuses. Second, he didn't have any skill with the weapon at all making his attacks worthless.

The sad thing about the above is his skills and stats should have been so much higher than mine that he should have embarassed me by his performance. Unfortunately he didn't bother to level them (he was wearing a club when he first came in, leading me to believe he was a strict caster mage) making him easy prey to ... easy prey.

Anyway, I should be taking a tour with some RDMs tomorrow or the day after to teach solo skills ... if I do I'll post my contact info if any of you on Fairy are interested. Almost took down a T+ during coffer hunting ... **** thing got lucky with some silence wears and kept dropping Aeroga III on me while my stone was going up >.< ... too much MP loss to finish it. C'est la vie.

Okay, I will be holding practicum tomorrow for levels 48-67 at various times during the day. If you are interested, please send me an email at junkmail 4+ airspirit d0+ net (farking web spiders) containing your level, common subjob, and character name. Information on your current gear would also be helpful if you care to provide it since if you desire I will not only do demonstration but direct practical solo training and I may have some replacement gear for you to test out depending on your level ... if I can call it all back in from those borrowing it now. Leaving a time that you should be online (including time zone) will make it easier for me to get a hold of you tomorrow. I would ask that you come with a couple apple pies and a couple mithkabobs if you can. Even if we've had bad blood in the past I hope we can work together to advance our abilities.

This only applies to Fairy server ... I apologize to the others out there.

im very unhappy i cant participate in this training session.. /em cries.

if there are any good rdm that are willing to do a similar sort of training session on lakshmi pleeeease hook me up ? i think it would be great if some rdm can get together and help eachother out. unfortunately most of the high level rdm that i see on lakshmi are jp, and very hard to comunicate with.

yesterday, i watched a taru rdm 65+ in crawlers nest.. he was helping to clear a soldier crawler and 3 worker crawler out of the way at the zone point.

he fully buffed himself and started on the soldier, it took approx 2 minutes to kill... he then proceeded to kill the other 3 workers.

i was sooo impressed with this, all i could do was /bow /kneel etc.

soon... sooooon i shall be like him.

rdm on lakshmi! help pls, im pretty good with my character, but im not proud enough to turn up advice from uuber duub-arus

Finally, dissention. As I said previously, this should not be stickied because of the fact that it guides people into a certain direction based on the original poster's opinion on how the class should be played. Rather than have a post that is telling you the poster's opinion on the most efficient type of RDM player, a stickied post should give you all of the options available to you, or at least the most popular. I have seen posts in this thread with players saying they want to start over and are doubting themselves over this post. That is not what a stickied guide should do.

Smurv, you yourself requested to have this post stickied yet you are arguing with the statements made by the poster, which contain the same information as the original post. You yourself disagree in that this is not the most efficient way to play, and yet it is presented that it is. The fact that it has been stickied by the powers that be, add to the effect that readers believe this is the 'gospel'.

Once again I must reiterate that this is a very opinion driven, non-neutral post, and I urge readers to take it with a grain of salt. This is most definitely not a tablet written by the final fantasy gods "Thou shalt play this way". By all means take pieces of this post and adapt it to your playstyle, however, Red Mage need not be played exactly as stated, nor is it definitely the most 'efficient' way.

Exactly right. The question is probably not the accuracy of the information provided -- in fact, nearly all of it is probably right -- but the tone -- it is arrogant and confrontational -- not acceptable for a sticky post which should be fairly neutral, gently offering advice based on consensus opinion. Inflammatory but informative posts are standard fare on an internet message board and may be welcomed -- but sticky posts bear the implicit endorsement of the moderators and thus color user's opinions of the site, and why the moderators would want to drive away potential users of the site with such a aggressive sticky is beyond me.

Off subject on the melee subject,

I think we should have an AF1-6 sticky imo. Just yestarday I got my AF3 /hurray! and I had to do it with 3 other RDM's excluding me (total of 4) and when we got to garlaige citidel to do final task of our quest all of the RDM's but me forgot to talk to the freakin Galka in the pub!! ><. Big delay in our AF3 tour I spent from 12noon-12midnight doing AF3 for 1WAR(Behemoths Dominion), 3PLD(Davoi), 2BRD(Davoi), 4RDM(Fei'Yin partI), 2WHM(Fei Yin), 4RDM(Garlaige Citidel PartII), 2THF(Garlaige Citidel), 2MNK(Castle Oztroja), 2DRG(Temple of Uggleighia) and 1DRK. basically in that order = 18 PPL believe it nobody bailed out for this whole tour. Wasn't boring but very tiring.

Smurv you had a great write up on AF2 that should be a little edited cause its kinda hard to understand, lol but is understandable at some point. (no offense)

Aracelt had a great write up on AF3 some additions could be made.
Not sure if you said the gaurdian statue sometimes does AoE 5 time in a row annihalating almost everybody but 5 ppl. lol yes it happened to me the Last gaurdian statue for the last RDM seemed the gaurdian statue was very made that we killed his 3 brothers before ><. Decided to do his AoE 5 times in a row killing 13 out 18 PPL in our alliance/PT fun stuff.

I understand you could look up the AF quests but there are many fellow RDM's out here that will post regarudless if it has been posted 6 posts below there new posts.. wouldnt having a sticky prevent AF posts for the future :P. just my opinion. btw I may try to write up on AF5, AF6, AF3 as detailed as possible when I get the time lol. give me your opinion if its worth being a sticky.

My original thread, from back in January, was a full detailed walkthrough of the entire AF process, like the AF 3. When I copied it, it was only a snippet. If someone wants to bump it, or dig it up to request a sticky, be my guest. The details I had were pretty inclusive all the way up to and including exactly what you should kill for each coffer key.

Im all for the melee redmages, I do regardless of the party liking it or not, unless its AoE silence or some other nasty attack. (once again carrying multiple armor sets helps a lot) Im cirious what sub you are using while soloing Even Matches and Toughs. About the only monsters I can see this possiable with are the Robber crabs, or monsters with weak attack and high defense, redmages can just stick it out... any other monster and soloing a mere decant challange is Increadiably Tough. (unless you have the fearless Ninja Sub)

I alternate between my AF and latency gear and use a BLM subjob. I never use blink when soloing as it takes as long to cast as it does for the mob to strip it. Utse is similarly wasteful, really. It only really works when you have Utse: Ni to fall back on and the massive evasion that Ninjas or Thieves have.

As far as what I solo I generally can take down most EM-T mobs that have drainable MP pools (using daggers) and all EP-DC+ mobs that don't (using swords). If they have a drainable MP pool then I can go much longer since I can drain over 60MP every 30 seconds with my dagger.

The only things I won't solo over EP rating are things that curse or silence. Both can really ruin your day since if you can't cast you are dead and if you lose MP and slow your pace you are probably just as dead.
