Why is the SCH Limit Break Fight Impossible?Follow

A friend of mine just quit because he couldn't beat his SCH limit break fight against Schultz. I know he had everything he needed (I bankrolled and farmed NMs for it all) and he is a good player so I know its not a matter of skill. Why the hell would SE make a fight that is impossible to do for a first time class? I mean seriously, I have seen the videos and all those guys obviously had merits into Elem skill and more. Has ANYONE ever beaten this fight with a TaruTaru without Merits? Is it even possible? Any help would be appreciated.
It isn't impossible I had little trouble beating it as a taru sch and it was the first job I took to 75. It took 2 tries but the first doesn't really count since I DCed the moment I entered. I just used SSkin torque, blink band, and a cream puff and had no merits and decent gear with HQ staves. It is a bit of a hit or miss fight but it is far from impossible just have to have good timing is all.
It's possible without merits and without top notch gear. As well as you can fail with merits and with top notch gear at lvl 70 if it decides to screw you over. It's kinda like rdm Maat. Except it's worse. >.> Namely that grimoire being stone or dark is automatic loss. As well as grimoire being light and both it and him casting cure on it after your first nuke. At least rdm can sleep Maat for some breathing room if he wants to be a jackass.
Sad fact is that a lot of these limit break fights are more about random luck than skill. Personally I lost my first rdm Maat with great gear and all skills capped, and armed to the teeth with meds. Then friend waltzed in with cheap gear and underleveled skills and won easily. Afterwards he told me that he just doesn't get it, he's much worse rdm than I am (his own words). Maybe difference was that my Maat chainspelled aero 3 after resisting both sleeps, whereas his spammed diaga and blind and he could sleep Maat with leisure and not be in any danger. Coincidentally my second try I won without using any meds, or even converting. Maat slept like a baby, and I simply rested mp between nukes.

That's it. It took me 21 tries, as a level 70 hume. The day it wasn't light or earth (dark is manageable if your blink blocks drain/aspir), I got a key resist somewhere, or Schultz decided it was fun to melee and interrupt me, etc. And I was excellently geared an prepared, each time. Spent a fortune in meds and equipment.

It took me a few attempts (4) against him as well; admittedly I'm Hume and not a Taru though. Might be worth focusing on a few HP+ items if you're dieing too quickly. It also depends on what strategy you use. If you ignore the book (which is what I did) you can defeat Gunther in 3 nukes (assuming no resists), and the fight is then not quite as dependent on the element of the Grimore. Use your Blink Band for a bit of breathing room, and just go all out as soon as you get into the battle; it stops Gunther having time to buff and you having to waste casting time with Dispel.
I posted my experience here on FFXIclopedia; again I realise it's for a Hume, not a Taru, but with Taru's better base INT stats, pure nuking on Schultz may be the better option since you're less likely to get a resist.

The SCH fight isn't bad at all. I did it at 70 for my first fight and went 1/1. I know a lot of strategies say go after the book first, but I just went straight for Schultz. Go in and unload on him, don't worry about the book, and you will be okay. I didn't have to heal myself at all. And now that SCH gets stoneskin it should be even easier!

Don't mistake this as anything beyond getting lucky.

I'm sure some luck did come into play, but the majority of it I would say is just being prepared. Granted no amount of preparedness can prevent an untimely resist, but it sure can make the fight a lot smoother.
