I took a while off and I have a lvl 90 BLM and 99 RDM but am getting ready to lvl him to 99. I have been in many aybessa parties and have seen many different methods and spells the BLM uses. For instance there was one where there were 3 blm using the "ja" spells and they were devestating and I saw another one when he was by himself using Thunder V instead of Burst 2. My question is to all the 99 experienced BLM's is what is the route to go and why? How do the "ja" spells work and how should i spend my merit points. Thanks in advance

This kind of question is somewhat open-ended. The "best route to go" to 99 depends on what your objectives are. You could just leech, although I don't recommend that. You could join any aby party, and kill things one at a time with your biggest nukes, and ride temps as people key them - you would at least be contributing.
But what I usually do, for myself (mule, since my blm is long-since 99) or my friends, is to just go in and wreck things while others key chests for me. My specific strategy is to use a camp with magic-aggro mobs (dolls, detectors, snowballs, golems, etc), pop manawall -> manafont -> ISL, run into the middle of a group of mobs, and cast my biggest -ja and -ga nukes until they all fall down. -ja spells are just bigger versions of -ga spells that also increase the damage of subsequent casts of the same nukes. So depending on how much HP the mobs have, my cast sequence usually starts with Blizzaja -> Blizzaga III, followed by whatever else I think I need to kill what's left. When my ice timers are down, I use thunder series nukes. Depending on how many mobs, a convert may be necessary midway through. Then I find another ISL chest and start all over. Depending on how much help you have, you can vary this strategy to include someone else pulling/gathering. You can also pop manafont up front, -ga everything down, then blind-key your blue chests until you hit an ISL.
Merits are pretty much the same as they have been: ice/thunder potency, unlock each AM2, INT, elemental/enfeebling/enhancing magic, etc.

Other than completion's sake (i.e. you want every spell), there's not much reason to unlock AM2. Tier 5 nukes are flat out better than AM2. On the other hand, merit points are easy to get, and you'll eventually run out of things to spend merit points on. When that time comes, you can unlock whatever AM2s you want. Since you're not likely to use them, it really doesn't matter how you distribute those merits.

Disregard this.
AM2 are still your third best elemental nuke, which means that anytime you find yourself in a situation where only a single element is viable against your target, you'll be casting it quite often.
Then again, if all you do on BLM is proc in Abyssea/Voidwatch and cast Warp2, I guess I could see his advice having merit.

You seem to be forgetting the 5% bonus damage from -aja line spells on spells of the same element, the massive bonuses you can receive from day/weather gear nowadays, the high DMG:MP ratios of AM2, and god forbid you should ever find yourself MBing, the added damage on those you merit beyond x1. All are excellent reasons to cast AM2s.
If none of these scenarios ever apply to you as BLM... something's wrong.
